William J. Griffey dies at 81

William Jewell Griffey, 81, of 204 Wildwood, well known insurance agent and developer in Excelsior springs, died this morning at the Excelsior Springs hospital. Mr Griffey was born October 17, 1887, in Ray County, and had been in business here since 1921. He developed housing additions near the high school and on Golf Hill. He erected the first manufactoring building in Excelsior Springs in 1951. He was amember of Clay Lodge No, 207, Excelsior Chapter R.A.M., St. Amand Commandry, No. 64 Knights Temple, and Ararat Shrine in Kansas City, Mo. He was active in Masonic work 52 years. Mr Griffey was a member of the Barbee Memorial Presbyterian Church. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Betty Griffey, of the home: a son, Higdon J. Griffey, Excelsior Springs: a daughter, Mrs. Helen G. Price, Kansas City, Mo; two step daughters, Mrs. Dorothy Holt, Louisville, Ky, and Mrs. Betty Ferguson, Excelsior Springs: two brothers, P. F. Griffey, Polo, and James C. Griffey, Excelsior Springs; four sisters, Mrs. Zella Burke, Kansas City, Mo., Mrs Sue Fuller, Kansas City, Mo., Mrs Alma Smith, Marceline, Mo., and Mrs Maud Brown, Richmond; eight grand-children and five great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 o'clock Thursday at the Barbee Memorial Presbyterian Church, burial in the masonic Cemetery. Family will receive friends from 7 to 8 o'clock tomorrow night at the prichard Funeral Home.
