CEMETERIES IN NEED OF MAINTENANCE & REPAIR
While visiting and photographing the cemeteries of Jasper County, Missouri I found that most of them were in good shape and were being maintained. There were some cemeteries, such as Central City and Cox Cemetery, that were once in bad shape, but have now been restored and are under full or partial maintenance. Other places were in a dissarray with bad overgrowth, and damaged or toppled tombstones. A list of some of the places most in need of attention are as follows:    John Schehrer
CEMETERY
DESCRIPTION
Alexander Cemetery Located 3 miles east of Carterville, Mo. on HH highway and then about 1/4 mile south and behind a new house, this cemetery is a very old burial place. There have been some attempts at cleanup around a few of the newer graves but large trees and brush are growing amoung the remaining older stones and the place is in bad shape.
GreshamIf anyone knows of any govt. grants or organizations that would be interested in the clean up of old cemetery's... I actually have one that is on my property that I have land locked... there are many unmarked graves and some really old civil war graves as well as some free mason stones... nobody has been buried there in close to 75 or so years from what I can tell... Many of the stones need reset and the land really needs re-cleared. Some surnames on stones: Reeder, Williams, Robertson, Decker........ Micheal Bridgman
Bradford located north of Alba, is in very bad shape with a heavy growth of briars and weeds.
Gem located about 4 miles east of Fidelity Corner and near the intersection on I-44 that leads to the stockyards, is in very bad shape with heavy overgrowth of brush and full sized trees. Much damage to graves and stones.
HendricksA country cemetery that has been cleaned in the past but is overgrown with high weeds now.
Martin-Fergusonlocated east of the entrance to Dyno-Nobel and in a cow pasture is fenced, but badly overgrown with high weeds.
Millerlocated east of Joplin and in the Duquesne area, is a larger cemetery that has been neglected for many years and is overgrown with large trees and brush. There are many graves and sunken areas throughout this place. This place needs a chainsaw regiment.
Peace Churchlocated in Joplin, Mo., large cemetery and one of Jasper County's oldest. This place has never had any regular maintenance but has been cleaned a few times in the past but is now overgrown with high weeds that cover the place.
Salem ChurchLocated southeast of Jasper Missouri, this cemetery was once well kept, but with the closing of the church, all maintenance ceased and the place is overgrown with high weeds.
StaffordLocated west of Jasper, Missouri, this cemetery is so overgrown with tall weeds and briars that is is nearly invisible until you get right up to it. There are many graves buried under the overgrowth.
