Research Note Bef. 1900 - This photo came to me from the Anderson family a number of years ago. And so - I hope that I have the names correctly stated.

L to R: Dudley, Ralph sitting on John's lap, John Anderson, Trudie, Goldie John, Mother Josie (Berryhill) Anderson, and Thomas. This can not be a correct line-up. It might be the first 5 or the last 5 children that John and Josie had.

Josie was a daughter of Michael Weeks and K. C. (Broyles) Berryhill.

Bill Landers' Note: There is something amiss in the John L. Anderson family photograph, although I can not say what it is. The approximate date of 1906 would be years after the death of Isabel Josephene Berryhill in 1900.

(There is a newspaper article saying John brought his ailing wife to Dent Montgomery’s home in 1899)
Dudley can not be in this photo as he would have been 30 years of age in 1906, married 7 years and probably in New Mexico, the father of at least two children. By the way, Dudley ’s date of death should read 17 December, 1913 as evidenced by these two articles from the Cassville Democrat.

‘Slayer of Dudley Anderson will be Hanged in New Mexico June 2?

Convicted at Tucumcari, N. M. on 26th of Last Month.

In the District court of Quay County, N . M., Carin vansickle was convicted April 26, of the cold blooded murder of Dudley Anderson, a Constable while in the discharge of his official duties, and sentenced to be hung at Tucumcari Sun says. He has lived in that county a number of years and his agee parents are also residents of that county.

On Dec. 17, 1913, Constable Dudley Anderson went to arrest Vnsickle on a charge of perjury, arising over the sale of mortgaged cattle. The constable found Vansickle in the brakes, southeast of San Jon, chopping wood. A man named Hutchinson was the only eye witness to the murder and he testified that Anderson came up quietly to where they were chopping wood and remarked that wood seemed plentiful in that vicinity. He the old (then told?) Vansicle that he had a warrant for him and read it to him, and he made no resistance or demonstration: he also talked to Hutchinson about taking care of some things. He asked the officer the privilege of getting his axe, but instead, he went where he had his Winchester covered up, picked it up and shot the officer dead. After the murder Vansicle went to his home and sent for a constable to arrest him.

When Vansicle was sentenced to be hung by the trial Judge, he did not show the least emotion and exhibited a careless indifference.

Dudley Anderson was raised near Washburn, and was a son of John Anderson. Dudley married a daughter of B. F. McCary a prominent citizen of near Washburn, who survives him with a number of children.

We hear that Vansicle resided near Golden many years ago.

To some kind friend, the Democrat returns thanks for a copy of the Tucumcari, N.M. Sun, giving an account of the trial.’

May 15, 1915, Cassville Democrat - Vansickle acquitted

Word was received in this city last Monday that Vansickle, the man that murdered Dudley Anderson near San Juan, New Mexico Dec. 17, 1913, had been acquitted.

Vansickle was tried on this serious charge sometime ago by jury and was sentenced to be hung. He appealed his case and was granted a new trial, and he was acquitted.

It will be remembered that Anderson was a deputy sheriff and had been given a warrant to serve on this man Vansickle and a short time after he had arrested him, he killed Anderson.

Dudley Anderson was a hard working man and was a good citizen. He was raised near Washburn , Mo., in this county, and married a daughter of Hon. B F McCary one of Barry County ’s honorable citizens of Washburn.

Anderson left a wife and several children. At the time of his death he was the owner of a 320 acre farm in New Mexico and carried a $1,000 life insurance policy, payable to his wife in the W.O.W., lodge.’

Maude McCary Anderson later married Luther Martin.

Based on the birth dates of the two daughters, 1906 sounds like a reasonable date for this photo. In that case, the lady seated would need to be a second wife?

The little boy to John’s right could not be Dudley and the little boy standing next to the mother could not be Thomas, who would have been about 17 in 1906.

As stated above, I do not have the answers to this puzzle.
