Notes from Olivia Snyder-Martinez by email to Phyllis Long:

Elijah was the son of William Elijah & Catherine (Smith) Catron. He fought in the Civil War. Later he was married to Lithea Jane Edens. He had a little Store and made shoes on the bank of the river. He had a grist mill and a little farm on bench land where their children were born. They were the parents of: George Riley Catron; Martha Jane Catron Fields; Flora Dora Catron Dillion Erwin; Laura Cora Laney; Ella Elvira Catron Starnes Kelleher; James Elbert Catron; Mary Ann Catron; William Isham Catron; Andrew Jefferson Catron; Worley Jackson "Jack" Catron; & Lula Eythel Catron HasHagen Cress.

After the Civil War his mill was burned 3 times, so Elijah & wife Lytha Jane decided to leave Hancock County, TN. They moved to Barry County, Missouri where they both had brother's living. They were only there a few years before Litha died in 1904. Then Elijah moved to The Dalles, OR with his children.

I remember Granny Fields speaking of her sister Mary Ann. She was a young girl when she died of probably what was whooping cough. She had basically strangled from all the phlegm. They rubbed her up with camphor, put coins on her eyes and laid her out in the house. Martha Jane and another sister were 'sitting up' with her when she began to cough and breath! They got her up and to bed and nursed her for several days before she finally did succumb to the illness. This story being told to me personally by my great aunt Martha Jane Catron Fields. I have never forgotten it!

I believe that Willie was William Isam who was deaf mute. We called him uncle Isam. He loved to whittle and carve. I used to watch him with his pocket knife whittling things. I loved it! I do not recall how the family communicated with him but they did.

Worley Jackson had gone by 'Jack' that I knew of. He and his wife had resided in Fairfield, CA for some time also. He later was a horse trainer and did rodeos and was also an inventor. He was called 'Wild Horse Jack.' He had a line of car wax called 'Catron's Car Wax'. The can was blue and gold and had a picture of a running cat at the top front of the can (CAT RUN....Catron......get the idea?). We used to have a can of it and I wish I would have saved it!

Flora Elvira went by the name 'Ella'. She was a very sweet lady. She would always have cookies or cake and milk for my brother and I when we would visit.

She married Starns and had two children that I recall. My mother's cousins were Charley and Flora Starns. Aunt Ella later was married to Dennis Kelleher. They are both buried at the IOOF Cemetery in The Dalles, Oregon.

The obit for Richard Eldon Catron I recall seeing. His father Wallace I believe was a brother of Woodrow Catron. Wallace was living in White Salmon, Washington across form Hood River, Oregon. Woodrow resided in Mosier, Oregon between The Dalles and Hood River. Their father I think was James Elbert Catron, son of Elijah A. I remember my mother going to her Uncle Jim's funeral. I spoke with Wallace's wife one time and she said her husband's father had said that his mother 'Elitha', was "the meanest woman who ever took breath!"
