Potts Hill sign, Benton Co., AR, on Line

POTTS HILL

On the Arkansas Missouri line where the Telegraph Road entered ten-mile long Cross Timber Hollow, on February 16, 1862, occurred the first skirmish on Benton County soil. Brig Gen. Curtis Federal army overtook the rear guard of Maj. General Price as he retreated southward. This marked the beginning of the Pea Ridge Campaign.

This sign is just a few steps across the Barry County, Missouri line on the Arkansas side in Benton County.

Simeon and Sarah A. (Williams) Potts lived here and then their son William Potts and his wife Alice Tennessee (Banks) Potts. Alice was a daughter of Lot and Elizabeth Ann (Woodard) Banks. When she died in 1957 this is place where she lived. Many of the Potts and Banks families are buried in Dent Cemetery at Jacket in McDonald County.
