DISCLAIMER

These historical sketches of Winona County, Minnesota, have been transcribed and posted here exactly as they appear in the 1884 book, "History of Wabasha County." As you read, you may notice a superior and demeaning attitude on the part of the writers toward the Native Americans. This is extremely disturbing to me. Nevertheless, in the interest of presenting these writings accurately, I have not deleted or modified any entries. Let us remember that this book is part of the past and we live in the present. We cannot be held accountable for our ancestors' actions and attitudes, but we can live the lives we have been given now with love and understanding for each other.

For more information about the settlement of the Winona County area and about the Native Americans visit

CHAPTERS

Surprisingly, the title page and preface do not specifically name the main author of these chapters which are largely written in the first person. However, the author names himself as "Bunnell" in the conversations of others, so I must assume that he was Dr. L. H. Bunnell whose name is found in the collection of authors and submitters as listed in the preface.
