The North called it "THE GREAT REBELLION" ~ referring to the South's planned secession from the Union concerning the subject of slavery.
The South called it "THE WAR OF NORTHERN AGGRESSION" ~ referring to the North's unwillingness to break the Union over this or any subject.
The issue of SLAVERY may have been the VEHICLE, but STATES' RIGHTS was the ISSUE.

The Copperheads.

Who, when by wretched whiskey tight,
Hiss out in rage their venomed spite,
Who crawl and sting, but never fight?
The Copperheads.

Who hold peace meetings, where they pass
Lengthy resolves of wind and gas,
Much like the bray of Balaam's ass?
The Copperheads.

Who, when false faction is forgot,
When patriots keep a common thought,
Have discord and dissension taught?

"There was a draft on the Union side, starting in early 1863. It was very unpopular. In New York City, protest marches turned into riots which lasted for three nights. The Union had to divert every available man (probably 3,500 total) to serve as riot police. There was protest all across the northern states, but NYC was the worst."

MY RELATIVES WHO SERVED


John Ritter, my gggrandfather, in his Civil War uniform, taken from a tintype.
He served in Company G of the First Regiment Heavy Artillery Minnesota Volunteers.



My maternal great-grandfather, James A Russell
He enlisted at a very young age as a drummer boy for Company F of the 30th Wisconsin Infantry. While serving in Dakota, he lost several fingers of his right hand to frost bite.
Our family has been unable to find his ancestry. We think he came from the East to Wisconsin with a family named Wilkerson. They may have been his aunt and uncle. If you have any information, please let me know.
