THE HUDSON BAY COMPANY COMPLAINS TO LONDON

The Canadian Pedlars (Metis) are blocking the Indian trade to Hudson Bay.

The Canadian Pedlars set up 'little shacks' everywhere of five, ten or twenty men to conduct trade.

The Hudson Bay Company would later call their own 'little shacks', 'houses', 'stations' or 'forts'.

Francois Marie Picote, sieur de Belestre (1719-1793) led a raid on the La Demoiselle's village, where he was wounded and returned to France for treatment.

(III)-Louis Joseph Gautier of Verendrye (1717-1761), Chevalier de Le Verendrye operated La Pointe, Ojibwa Country (Wisconsin) until 1755. Marin son Pierre Paul Marin? of Green Bay, New France (Wisconsin), and Verendrye of La Pointe, Ojibwa Country (Wisconsin), are in constant wrangle over their respective rights to the upper Mississippi region. Paul Marin de la Malgue (La Marque) (1692-1753), commandant La Baye, New France (Wisconsin) says that in 1753-54 he procured 700 packs fur from his Green Bay station, New France (Wisconsin), and if La Verandrie had not stopped, his people he would have made 'un coup' such as Green Bay, New France (Wisconsin) had never made before. Marin's people operated out of Fort Duquesne (L'Assomption) (Pittsburg, Co. Allegheny, Pennsylvania) at the Crow and Mississippi Rivers. He also had another post near Hastings, Minnesota. This wrangling suggests both parties are employing the Coureurs des Bois to trade the North West.

(III)-Jean Baptiste Cadot (1723-1803), in the employ of Louis Le Gardeur, Sieur De La Repentigny, is reported living at Sault Ste Marie, New France (Michigan/Ontario).

The Fort at Sault Ste Marie, New France (Michigan) is 110 feet square, enclosing three houses. A bull, two heads of cattle, three cows, two heifers, a horse and a mare have been brought from Fort Michilimackinac, New France (Michigan). The Frenchman (actually a Metis) and his wife had cleared the land and planted grain. The Frenchman, however, had no intentions of becoming a farmer, and two Indian slaves are employed to work the land.

May 29: The Chevalier Jacques Repentigny LeGardeur of Saint-Pierre (1701-1755), originally commander of Fort Michilimackinac, New France (Michigan), dispatched a party of ten men in two canoes this spring (May 29) to build a trading post near the forks of the Saskatchewan, North West Territories, which they called Fort La Jonquiere (Nipawin, Saskatchewan). LeGardeur is actually stationed at Fort La Reine (Portage la Prairie, Manitoba) from 1750 to 1752. Some contend this fort is built near Calgary, Alberta and abandoned in 1759. This story suggests that a party of ten Frenchmen were dispatched by Boucher de Nioerville (Niverville), Lieutenant under command of Jacques LeGardeur of Saint Pierre (1701-1755), to established Post La Jonquiere on the Saskatchewan River, near the mountains. Bishop Emile Tardiff, in his writings, supports the story that De Niverville built Fort La Jonquiere at, or near, Calgary. These stories or expeditions were fueled by the 1745 reports from the Cree, who said the Poskoyac River (Saskatchewan River) started in the very lofty mountains, and over the mountains a great lake exists, the water of which is undrinkable.

The two Laurent Cadotte jr. born 1773 and 1783 may suggest two or more Cadotte Sr. or different mothers?

This is near present day Pioua, Ohio.

The French killed the Miami Chief Demoiselle, a trader, and thirty of his Miami and Memeskia warrior, burned the English Fort, and captured three more traders. Marquis de Duquesne de Menneville noted that he is not in the King's service: He has married a squaw, but I will reward him a pension of two hundred francs, which will flatter him infinitely.

Joseph Leverendrye, the French commander of Fort La Pointe, Ojibwa Country (Wisconsin), replaced Paul Martin. Leverendrye encouraged the neighbors on the Dakota to the north and east to trespass on the Dakota territory to obtain furs. Joseph basically undid the peace efforts of the Martins and caused the outbreak of war.

Louis Luc (Chevalier) de La Corne de Chapt seigneur de Terrebonne b-1704 is commander from 1753 to 1755 of La Verendrye's Post of the Western Sea (Fort La Reine, Portage Laprairie, Manitoba). Chevalier, (II)-Louis De La Corne (1711-1761) of Saint-Luc became commander of the North West and established Fort La Corne (Fort Saint Louis) near the forks of the North and South Saskatchewan Rivers. He retained his commission until 1757. He explored the Carrot River Valley. Others suggest that Fort a La Corne (Fort Des Prairies or Upper Nipawi), at the forks of the Saskatchewan, is built by Verendrye in 1748. Still others suggest (II)-Louis La Corne of Saint-Luc (1703-1761) becomes the commandant of trade for all the North West Territories, including the Hudson Bay, replacing (II)-Pierre Gaultier (1686-1749) Sieur de la Verendrye and (IV)-Pierre Paul LaGardeur (1657-1736) of Saint Pierre before him. Earlier exploration had reached the Stony (Rocky) Mountains, possibly driven by trade or their quest for discovery of the route to the Western Sea. The important task now is to consolidate their position before the English made any moves on this territory. Joe Fromhold suggests they established a sizable farming operation at Fort La Corne. They claim the fort imported carts, oxen, and farming equipment by canoe from Quebec and that they grew the first wheat west of the Great Lakes. This claim is likely not correct.

Paul Marin de la Malgue (La Marque) (1692-1753) is recorded as commandant of Green Bay, New France (Wisconsin). Paul Marin is commissioned by the Governor General of New France to establish a series of forts to secure the Ohio Valley from English traders. In 1754 he established Fort Duquesne New France (L'Assomption (Pittsburg, Co. Allegheny, Pennsylvania).

Ange Duguesne Governor dispatched Pierre Paul Marin (1692-1753) de La Malgue to occupy the Ohio Valley. The British government had given permission to the governor of the Virginia Colony to use force against the French. George Washington, Tanaghrisson and two other chiefs arrived at Ohio from the New England Colony of Virginia, December 11, to counter the French move.

The Cree advised the Hudson Bay Company that 30 Canadian in 7 canoes are intercepting the furs of the Assiniboine. Some claim the Hudson Bay Company is actively provoking the Cree against the Canadian Peddlers. Twenty Canadians blocked the Severn River, effectively eliminating Hudson Bay Company trade on this river. The head of Fort Albany, James Bay, wrote that the Peddlers guarded all the tributaries and all arms of the Albany River (Ontario). They complained that the Indians can no longer reach their post. He said that little shacks of five, ten or twenty men are set up everywhere. In the spring the Peddlers take their furs to Quebec, Quebec. In the autumn they return and reoccupy their shacks, so as to gather the high-quality winter pelts. (I)-Thomas White, Chief Factor Moose Factory, writing to (I)-James Isham d-1761, mentioned the trade here is the same or worse.

Fort Duquesne, New France (L'Assomption) (Pittsburg, Co. Allegheny, Pennsylvania) located at the confluence of the Allegheny and Monongahela Rivers- at the site of present day Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, was begun by the British. In April 1754, it was captured by the French Sieur de Contrecoeur and completed.

Lisbon, Portugal is destroyed by earthquake and tidal wave. The ministers in Boston proclaimed it was punishment for the sacrilege of using lightning rods, invented in 1753, to avert the wrath of God.

June: Paul Marin de la Malgue (1692-1753) commanded an expedition to occupy the Ohio Valley, establishing Forts between Lake Erie and the Ohio. Paul Marin de la Malgue (1692-1753) died at Fort de la Riviere au Boeuf, and is succeeded by Le Gardeur. George Washington (1732-1799) led a Virginia force to Ohio to counter the French occupation challenge.

December 4: Louis Thomas Joncaire de Chabert (1670-1740) is stationed at Fort Venango (Franklinj, Pa) until 1755 then he served the French army at Fort Niagara in 1755. George Washington (1732­99) approached Fort Venango with a letter from the English Governor (I)-Robert Dinwiddle (1693-1710).

December: Jacques LeGardeur de St. Pierre (1701-1755) was commanding French troops at newly established Fort Le Boeuf, replacing Paul Martin de La Malgue who had died there. His commission was to reclaim the Ohio Valley for France. George Washington (1732­99) and Virginia's governor (I)-Robert Dinwiddie (1693-1710), visited to demand the French remove themselves from the valley.
