Alta McVean

Hallock, Minn. Alta S. McVean, 77, Hallock died at her home on Sunday, Sept. 7, 2003.

Alta Schreiber was born Dec. 15, 1925 in Valley City, to Rudolph and Lillian (Wagner) Schreiber. She grew up on the family farm near Sanborn, ND and graduated from Sanborn High School.

Alta attended Concordia College in Moorhead and graduated in 1947 with a degree in biology and home economics. She worked as the Kittson County Home Extension Agent in Hallock from 1947 to 1948. Alta taught home economics in Lancaster from 1957 to 1959.

She married E.G. "Bud" McVean, June 1, 1948 in Valley City and made their home in Hallock. She was active and held offices in local and area Presbyterian organizations.

Alta continued her interest in home economics through district organizations, and judging at 4-H, county fairs, and area community shows and exhibits. She was active in the Hallock Gardening and Curling Clubs and contributed to local theater and pageants through her costuming talents. Her interests included sewing, related handwork skills, gardening, and antiques.

Family members include two daughters, Vikki McVean, Minneapolis; Minda Pearson, Owensboro, KY; a son, Brian (Laurie) McVean, Duluth; and two grandchildren, Matthew and Maria McVean.

She was preceded in death by her son, Blair in 1987, and her husband in 1996.

The family prefers memorials to the First Presbyterian Church in Hallock, Hallock Senior Citizens Center, the Kittson County Volunteer Ambulance and the Kidney/Diabetes foundations.

Funeral services were Friday, Sept. 12, 2003, 2 p.m. in the First Presbyterian Church, Hallock. Interment was in Greewood Cemetery, Hallock with Rev. Don Woodford presiding.

Honorary pallbearers were Delbert Gustafson, Allen Ray Gustafson, James Gustafson, R.C. Nelson, Harry Vernon, Charles Balstad, Maynard Wagner, Joe Bouvette, nephews, Paul Barnier, David Winter, Bill Winter, Jeff Winter, and Craig Winter.

Pallbearers were Roger Malm, Dan Derouin, Craig Pearson, Tom Gustafson, Tim Gustafson, and David Linegard.

Adamson-Austin-Hughes Funeral Home, Hallock, was in charge of arrangements.
