In 1912, Sam Maxwell owned 320 acres north of Humboldt and south of the James Diamond farm. N 1/2 sec 23 (the Stewart farm) SW 1/4 sec 29. Sam Maxwell was a dealer in horses and would ship them to Humboldt the the carload and sell them to farmers. He had the contract to build the road or roadbed for the Soo Line Railroad from Lancaster to Noyes. He hired farmers and horses to scrape the dirt. Herb Diamond said he drove a team when he was 13 years ago. The track was finished in 1904.

She was three years old when they came to Minnesota. Information from Melissa (Diamond) Bean says that Lydia wanted her children to have an education and the family moved to Minneapolis. Lydia got the job of taking care of court children. She cared for them and took them to court hearings. She was well paid for her work. Sam bought older homes and repaired them, sold them, or rented them for a good price. The sons, Earl and Clarence were attorneys and helped with the legal work. In his latter years, Sam would come to Humboldt and stay with Herb and Annie Diamond. He would go to the Kittson County Fair and visit with friends.

Marion May Notaro

Marion May Notaro passed away March 25, 2003, in San Diego, California. Born Marion May Maxwell in Humboldt, Minnesota, on May 11, 1920, and endearingly called "Tooie" as the youngest sibling, she was preceded in death by her parents, Samuel and Lydia Maxwell, and her six brothers and sisters.   

Marion was homecoming queen of McCallaster College in Minneapolis, MN and graduated with a master's degree in business. She made her career in real estate, owning several rental income properties in the Minneapolis area. After her marriage to James Notaro, who predeceased her in 1998, Marion became active in the Minneapolis suburb of Bryn Mawr, owning and operating an antique store, and editing and writing for the Bryn Mawr Bugle. She was an enthusiastic public speaker, president of the local seniors association, and often entertained groups at the Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Church and Jewish Community Center.  

Marion was known for her artistic flair. She painted in oils ala Renoir, collected antiques, played the piano, and wrote humorous short stories about family life. She was an avid mystery reader. She had three beloved dogs, Mikey, Pulco and Oliver. She enjoyed traveling and spending winters in her Laguna Beach, CA, home.  

Marion is survived by her son and daughter, and their families; Jeff Striebel, grandchildren Jeremy and Michelle, and great-grandson James, all of Minneapolis, MN, and Linda Waggoner and granddaughter, Cassidy, of San Diego, CA, and grandson, Monty, of Fargo, ND.

Services: Graveside service is pending at Lakewood Cemetery, 3600 Hennepin Avenue, Minneapolis, Minnesota. 

Another notice said graveside service is Tues. April 1, 2 pm at Oakhill Cemetery, 59th & Lyndale, Minneapolis, MN, pending weather.
