Celia Smolak

HALLOCK, MINN. - Celia Roman Smolak, 79, died Tuesday, June 29, 2004.

Celia was born May 9, 1925, to parents John and Emmy Jorgensen. She was raised on a farm southeast of Thief River Falls.

On June 25, 1943, Celia married John Roman, Plummer, and they farmed in the area for a number of years. They moved to Hallock where they settled to raise a family.

John opened a radiator repair shop and soon after the young entrepreneurs opened a store,

"New and Next to New." Celia became the proprietor of the busy store and she soon expanded it, adding a motel in 1961 that flourished for many years.

Although owning the Gateway Motel took up much of Celia's time, she also enjoyed gardening in her flower beds. Photography, quilting, canning and spending time with her family were also important aspects of Celia's life.

Years after the death of John Roman, Celia married Raymond Smolak, August 4, 1984. They lived happily in Hallock.

She is survived by her children, Charlette (Lynn) Rynning, Kennedy; Timothy Roman, Hallock; Lynette (Earl) Berg, Middle River; and Clara (Floyd) Franklin, Dalhart, Texas; grandchildren, Michael, Brittany, Stephanie, Amber, Trevor, Dillon, Troy, Shandi and Josh; and three great-grandchildren; brothers and sisters, Freddie Jorgensen, Thief River Falls; Lillian (Wilbur) Koop, Hallock; Willie Jorgensen, Danberry, Wis.; Raymond (Jean) Jorgensen, Phoenix, Ariz.; Kenneth (Erika) Jorgensen, Colorado Springs, Colo.; Myrtle Rieman, Monroe, Wash.; Rosie Roisland, Karlstad; and John (Margie) Jorgensen, Red Lake Falls.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond; sister, Minnie; brother, Earl and her parents.

Funeral services were 10:00 a.m., Saturday, July 3, 2004, in Grace Lutheran Church, Hallock.

Rev. Kenneth Losch presided. Renee Ryden, organist and Galen Nordin, soloist. Honorary pall bearers were Celia's grandchildren.
