On 15 Jan 1860, when Frederick was close to 5 years old, his mother married Ole Johnsen. Ole and Olise came to America about 1881 and settled near Roseau, MN. He changed his name to Efshen. Frederick was a half-brother to John and Olof Efshen, also to two half-sisters, Mrs. Ole Ristad and Johnann in Norway. Olise d. Dec 1893 and Ole d. Apr 1915.

Frederick and Beret's first baby, Sophie, was born March 10, 1883. Shortly after, they left via a wagon and oxen for Kittson County and homesteaded in Section 8 of Hazelton Township next to Ole Ristads. Twelve children were born to them on this farm. Two of them died in infancy.
