Notes for JOHN GARDINER:

John Gardiner, Loyalist, and his wife came to the Island of Saint John (now Prince Edward Island) from Rhode Island soon after the birth of their eldest son William in 1786. It is believed they accompanied Eunice's parents.

John inherited from his father a farm at Boston Neck, Rhode Island, the family bible and a clock.

The first land John acquired on the Island was 500 acres on Lot 5, which were conveyed to him by the proprietor, Edward Lewis. On May 28, 1791, he received by conveyance from Sheriff Douglas, Lot 88 in the third hundred of Charlotte Town. On the 5th October, 1791, her received by conveyance from James Douglas, sheriff, a number of pasture lots in Charlotte Town Royalty. From this time on he, and later his sons, acquired considerable land in Charlotte Town and Charlotte Town Royalty as well as other parts of the Island.

The location of John's home is described in his will. He mentions his wife Mary (Eunice had died in 1832) and makes her and his brother-in-law David Stewart executors of his will which was signed on Sept. 22, 1841.

John called his farm "Potosi Grove". The dwelling was located on Lots 399 and 400 of Charlotte Town Royalty which is on the east side of the North or York River, just north of what was the Upton Driving Park. In the Meacham Atlas of 1880 the land is shown as the property of Dr. John S. Jenkins. The farm also contained Lots 447, 44- and 446 and in 1880 was the property of the Hurrys.
