that includes much of the William OWEN
line.
Rae Calvert
reports that you can find
transcriptions of Braintree records on the net
now. (12 Jul 2000)
Remember that mere birth records do not necessarily
define the identity of later found OWENs. Rae and I
are disagreeing about John OWEN (Nathaniel &
Mary _?_). She believes that this John
is the John OWEN of Falmouth, ME, (OWEN,
MUSTARD, DUNNING line) while I think this
John OWEN is the Rev. John OWEN of
Groton, CT who m Margaret STIDHAM, Anna MORGAN
& Mary FITCH. Neither of us has found any
proof either way, yet... and we certainly haven't
convinced each other, either.
The OWENs of Braintree, Ma
1.
William OWEN1 was probably
born about 1611 in England, possibly London, from
which he immigrated in 1634 first to Barbados at
age 23,[1] then to Boston
sometime before his 1650
marriage.[3] He married 29th day
of the 7th month at Braintree, Norfolk Co.,
MA[2] to
Elizabeth
DAVIS-DAVIES of London. The
unpublished OWEN genealogy suggests
further:
"The ship
Hopewell, Capt. Thomas Wood, which
cleared from the port of London for Barbados 17
Feb 1634 (1635 New Style) contained among 150
passengers a William OWEN, age 23; a
John OWEN age 20, and an Owen
WILLIAMS, age 21. The following April the
ship Elizabeth, Capt. William
Stagg, sailing from London for New England,
carried among 28 passengers, mostly women,
Margaret DAVIES, aged 32, and her three
children of whom the youngest was
Elizabeth, aged one year. It is possible
that William OWEN of the
Hopewell was the same appearing 15
years later in Braintree. The infant
Elizabeth DAVIES on the ship
Elizabeth is known to be the same
who married William OWEN at Braintree.
Her mother, Margaret, became the wife of
Charles GRICE of Braintree who in his
will described William as his
"son.""9
