Vicksburg was once home to several blacksmiths including Mark Worthington, Hiram Van Pelt, Billy Godschalk, George Tillotson, and Henry Evans. Henry Evans worked into the 1960's. |

Vicksburg's Power Plant and Water Works, 1909. Early in 1896, citizens brought the need for electricity before the Vicksburg Village Council. After much discussion, it was decided to submit to the people a bond issue to build a combination water works and electric plant. By July a spot for the plant had been found on the east side of North Main Street by the railroad tracks, and contracts were soon awarded for design and construction. In August of that year, the Commercial reported, "The Village Council is well pleased with electric system ...and for a small appropriation which will light our village in a first class manner and leave plenty of capacity for stores and dwellings..." By December water pipes had been laid and pressure was found to be 150 pounds per square inch. In January, 1897, the Commercial stated, "The electric lights started last night and gave good satisfaction, giving a clear steady light with very little flicker...The streets were lighted up and looked quite citified..." Soon about 100 homes, the Methodist Church and the Depot were enjoying the new utility. |
