Bertha G. Bacon
"St. Clair, May 24 - Mrs. Bertha G. Bacon, 80, widow of Charles Bacon, died Monday in her home at 77 Owana drive, East China Township. Mrs. Bacon was born May 31, 1876 in St. Clair County, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Wilder Chaffe, early settlers in the county. She lived in East China Township for 30 years. She is survived by a son, Charles Bacon, St Clair. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at the T. R. Bower funeral home. Rev. Earl Linderholm, pastor of First Baptist church, will officiate. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery."

Donn M. Bacon
"May 22, 1978 - St. Clair - Donn M. Bacon, 57, 201 North Riverside Avenue, died May 22 in Port Huron, apparently of a heart attack. He was born Feb. 14, 1921 in St. Clair, and he was a lifelong area resident. He attended St. Clair public schools and Port Huron Junior College. He graduated from Olivert College, where he was class captain of the Phi Alphi Pi fraternity. Mr. Bacon was the owner and operator of coin-operated laundries in St. Clair and Marysville. He was a former acting postmaster of St. Clair. Among his civic activities, he was a past chairman of the St. Clair County Library Board, a past president of the the St. Clair Rotary Club and of St. Clair Recreation Inc., a pst member of the former St. Clair School Board, and a former member of the St. Clair Harbor Commission. He was also active in the March of Dimes and Boy Scouts and was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church. Mr. Bacon was an Army veteran of World War II. He is survived by three sons, Dorian L. and Donn C. Bacon, both of St. Clair, and D. Kent Bacon of Marysville, and two grandchildren. Services were conducted May 24 in St. Paul's churuch, with Rev. Franklin Bennett, rector, officiating. Burial was in Hillside Cemetery. Arrangements were made by L. C. Freiderichs and Son Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the county library."

Donna Claire Bacon
"Mrs. W.S. Bacon Is Buried Tuesday - Death takes Prominent Woman At Sister's Home After Long Illiness - Funeral services were held at 2p.m., Monday for Mrs. Walter S. Bacon, 45, who died Friday following a long illiness. The last rites were held in L. C. Friederichs funeral home and First Congregational church with Rev. Clyde H. Wilcox, pastor, officationg, and burial was in Hillside cemetery. Mrs. Bacon, the wife of Walter S. Bacon, proprietor of Bacon's Drug store, had been in ill health for several months, and was fatally stricken at the home of her sister, Mrs. Fred Lawrence, to whoses home she had been taken to convalesce. Mrs. Bacon, who graduated from St. Clair high school, was Miss. Donna Claire Mills before her marriage to Mr. Bacon July 27, 1915. Surviving are Mr. Bacon, one son Donn Mills Bacon, her father, Daniel Mills, and a sister Mrs. Lawrence, all of whom live in St. Clair. Mrs. Bacon was very active in community activities. She was a member of the First Congregational church, of Alden circle, and of the church choir for many years. A member of the Maccabees, Mrs. Bacon was a member of Cornell chapter, No. 93, Order of Eastern Star and of the Port Huron Musical club. George Bacon, Yonkers, N. Y. , brother of Walter Bacon; Harry Thompson (Thomson) of Str. Willis King, uncle of Mrs. Bacon; and Mr. and Mrs. H. J. Perrin, Hillsdale, Mich., were among the out of town persons to attend the funeral."

Walter S. Bacon
"Druggist Stricken at Work - Walter S. Bacon, 59 of 214 1/2 South Riverside Drive, St Clair, prominent St Clair and Port Huron druggist many years, died unexpectedly Saturday afternoon of heart disease while working in Barnet Service Drug Store No. 1. He was born Dec. 25, 1887, in St Clair, where he lived all his life. A short time after he graduated in pharmacy from Farris Institute, Big Rapids, Mich. he opened a drug store at 214 South Riverside drive, St Clair, which he operated some 30 years. After the death in May, 1940 of his wife, Mrs. Dona Bacon, he sold his store and took a position as assistant manager of the Liggest Drug company store, 300 Huron avenue. When the Ligget store closed several months ago he went to work in the Barnet store. Mr. Bacon is survived ay a son, Donald S. Bacon, student in Olivet College, Olivet, Mich., a grandson Dorian Lee Bacon and a half-brother, George Yonkers, New York. The remains are in the Friederichs funeral home, St Clair. Funeral arrangements have not been completed."

Caleb W. Bailey
"Caleb W. Bailey was born in Wagontown, Penn., Sept. 20, 1826, and died at his home in this city Sunday, May 8, 1892, aged 66 years. His parents were Quakers and he was brought up in their good way and always was an honest, upright man and a good citizen. Mr. Bailey came to St. Clair in the year 1853 where he has resided up to the time of his death, regarded by all who knew him with respect. He was taken sick a week ago Sunday with congestion, brought on by a hard cold and all that loving hearts and willing hands could do could not stay the hand of death. The funeral was held Wednesday afternoon at the residence on Vine street conducted by the members of Evergreen Lodge, F. & A. M. of which he became a member, May 17, 1854, Rev. W. B. Millard, officiating. The deceased leaves a wife and two daughters, Mr. E. F. Bacon, of Detroit, and Miss Emma Bailey, of Springfield, North Dakota, and many friends to mourn his death."

George H. Baird
"George H. Baird's friends were shocked on Thursday when they heard of his death which occurred shortly after midnight Wednesday. He was down town during the day, apparently in perfect health, but at 6 o'clock in the evening was stricken with a stroke of apoplexy. He was alone with a son when he was stricken, as Mrs. Baird is conducting a boarding house just south of the bridge. Deceased was born in Saint Clair township on September 28, 1842, and was a son of William and Charlotte Baird. There was also two daughters inn the family, both of whom are living: Ellen, now Mrs. Young, of Port Huron, and Lottie, now Mrs. James Havey, of Port Huron. Mr. Baird moved to the farm on which he died in 1856, and spent the remainder of his life there with the exception of six years which was spent in Port Huron. He was married at the age of 42 years and was the father of six children, of whom four are living. The funeral was held from his late home on Sunday afternoon at two o'clock."

Marjorie Gloria Baird
"Bad Axe - Marjorie Gloria Baird, 66, a resident of Bad Axe, died unexpectedly at Spectrum Health Downtown, in Grand Rapids, She was born Jan. 26, 1933, in Speaker Township near Yale. She was the daughter of Zota Murray Hinkley and the late George Hinkley. She was a graduate of Marysville High School. Miss Marjorie Hinkley and Mr. Don Baird were married July 11, 1953, at St. Edward's On-the-Lake Catholic Church in Lakeport. They were married 46 years. Marjorie was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Bad Axe, The Solid Investment Club and the Child Study Club. She was a former Girl Scout leader. She was a former employee of Dr. Kenneth Herrington in Bad Axe, and was the office manager of the family business, Smith Distributing, also in Bad Axe. Marjorie liked working with the computer and playing bridge. She loved her grandchildren. Surviving are her husband, Don of Bad Axe; two sons, Dr. Don Baird and his wife, Carol, of Delray Beach, Fla. and Jim Baird and his wife, Judy, of Bad Axe; two daughters, Diane Patterson and her husband, Patrick, of Caseville and Jean Pfeifle and her husband, Tom, of Petosky; seven grandchildren. Alison Baird, Ashley Baird, Stephanie Baird, Jimmy Baird, Jennifer Pfeifle, Katie Pfeifle and Nikki Pheifle; her mother, Zota Hinkley of Marysville: five brothers, Dick Hinkley and his wife, Ann, of Tavares, Fla., Bud Hinkley and his wife, Betty, of Port Huron, Larry Hinkley and his wife, Eddie, of Tavares, Fla., Jim Hinkley and his wife, Nancy, of Port Huron and Ron Hinkley of Marysville; one sister, Janet Doan and her husband, Lester, of Port Huron; her sister-in-law, Poppy Goddard and her husband, John, of Marysville; and several nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 1, 1999, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Bad Axe. The Rev. Jack Lei pert, pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow at Sacred Heart Cemetery, Bad Axe. Friends and neighbors may call at the MacAlpine Funeral Home, Bad Axe, from 7 to 9 p.m. today and 1 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.Tuesday and 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Wednesday. There will be a parish scripture service at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. Expressions of sympathy may be offered to Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Bad Axe, or the donor's choice."

Ralph J. Baker
"Age 89, of Florida, formerly of Marine City, died March 18, 2000. Mr. Baker owned Baker manufacturing Company, Baker Electrical Corporation and later Fisher-Baker Corporation. He was active in the Marine City United Methodist Church, Marine City Chamber of Commerce, and was past-president of the Marine City Lions Club, served on the board of directors of the Marine City Savings and Trust, Michigan National Bank of Port Huron and the St. Clair County Planning Commission and a member of the Old Goats Golf Club. Mr. Baker is survived by his wife, Virginia; daughters, Carol Gardner of Suttons Bay, Marjorie Westrick of St. Clair and Virginia Lasensack of Marine City; son, Robert of Florida; 12 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; sisters, Meta Gilleo of Georgia, Edna Buckingham of Grand Rapids, Ema Wonsey of East China and Ruth Thompson of Florida. He was predeceased by a great-grandson Austin Westrick. Services were held in Marine City United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Donna J. Osterhout officiating. Arrangements were made by Bower-Rose Funeral Home, Marine City. Burial was in Woodlawn Cemetery, Marine City. Memorials can be made to the church, Marine City Lions Club or to the charity of the donor's choice."

"St. Clair - Robert F. Baker, 63, died June 8 [1984] in St. Joseph's Hospital-West, Clinton Township. He was born Sept. 26, 1920 in St. Clair. He married Donna Slogot June 7, 1945. Mr. Baker was plant superintendent of St. Clair Plastics, Marine City. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army. He was an honorary member of the St. Clair Fire Department, a member of Disabled American Veterans Port Huron Post 12, a member of American Legion, Charles J. Fulton Post 382 and a former member of the St. Clair Special Police. He is survived by his wife; two sons, Robert F. Jr. and Thomas J.; two daughters, Gail Anthony and Susan Tebeau; a brother, Thomas; a sister, Margaret Schmitt; and six grandchildren. Funeral services were June 11 in St. Mary's Catholic Church. the Rev. Edward Ritter, pastor, officiated. Arrangements were made by the L. C. Friederichs and Son Funeral Home. Burial was in the church cemetery. Memorial may be made to the St. Clair fire Department."

"St. Clair, Dec. 6 - Miss Helen Elizabeth Baldwin, 53, of 410 South Third street, died Wednesday in her home after a long illness. Miss Baldwin was born in Comstock, Sept. 13, 1898. She came to St. Clair in 1900 with her parents. She was graduated by St. Clair High School and trained as a nurse in Port Huron Hospital after graduation. She operated the Baldwin Nursing Home here for the last 10 years after nursing many years in St. Clair Community Hospital. She is survived by her mother, Mrs. Edna L. Baldwin, St. Clair; two brothers, Harold Baldwin, Detroit, and Clayton Baldwin, Birmingham, and a sister, Miss Margaret Baldwin, St. Clair. Miss Baldwin was a member of the First Congregational Church. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in the T. R. Bower funeral home. Rev. Robert J. Burgess, pastor of First Congregational Church, assisted by Rev. Frank Hartley, pastor of First Methodist church, will officiate. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery. Remains are in the funeral home."

"Mrs. Janet Zoe Balfour, 64, wife of R. Watt Balfour, died Thursday at St. Clair Community Hospital. Mrs. Balfour was a lifelong resident of St. Clair County. She was born Janett Droulard August 14, 1883 in St. Clair County, a member of a pioneer family. She was a member of Cornell chapter, No. 03, Eastern Star, WSCS First Methodist church and Fireside Baraca Philathea Sunday school class. Mrs. Balfour leaves her husband, three daughters, Mrs. H. D. Carl, Shanghai, China, Katherine Balfour, St. Clair, and Mrs. Arthur Weinland, Montgomery, Ala; two sons Donald W. Balfour, Nashville, Tenn., and Robert G. Balfour, Venice, Calif; two sisters, Mrs. James V. Dent, Chatham, Ont., and Mrs. Albert Leach, Richmond, Mich.; three brothers, Roy Droulard, Detroit, Asa Droulard and Earl Droulard both of St. Clair; and 11 grandchildren. Funeral services were held from the Methodist church last Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. Rev. Owen Knox officiating. Burial was in Hillside cemetery. Arrangements were made by the T. R. Bower funeral home. Pallbearers were; Nelson and David Leach, Keith, Don, and John Droulard, and Douglas Radike, all nephews."

Pvt. Kenneth R. Balfour
"Marine City, May 29 - Mrs. Mary Jane Balfour received news in a letter from Cpl. Smith that her husband, Pvt. Kenneth R. Balfour, 24, was killed in action April 12 with a tank battalion in Germany. Mrs. Balfour was notified late in April by the war department that her husband was missing in action. She wrote Corporal Smith, serving in the same unit as her husband, for further information. Corporal Smith in his reply, received by Mrs. Balfour Monday, told that Private Balfour was killed in action. Private Balfour was son of Mr. and Mrs. Russell Balfour, St. Clair. He was the father of a son, David, 2. Private Balfour entered the service in April, 1944, and trained at Fort Know, Ky., Camp Chaffee, Ark,. and Fort George G. Meade, Md., before going overseas in October 1944. He was graduated from St. Clair High school in June, 1940. He operated a service station here."

Mary Powie Balfour
"On Tuesday, Oct. 10, a most sad and terrible accident occurred, by which Mrs. James Balfour lost her life. It is unknown to anyone just how the accident occurred, but it is supposed that Mrs. Balfour, in attempting to fill her gasoline stove, spilled some of the liquid on the flames causing a terrible fire to suddenly spring up and communicate with her clothes. She immediately ran out of the house all ablaze and began to wrap herself in some quilts which hung on the line. Her screams soon brought her mother and sister to the spot, and they continued to wrap her in the quilts until the fire was out. Her husband and a doctor were hastily summoned, but it was seen immediately that she was beyond human help. The accident occurred at about eleven o'clock, and she lived until after four in the afternoon, regaining her consciousness nearly to the last."

"St. Clair, May 1 - Robert Watt Balfour, 67, died Wednesday in St. Clair Community Hospital after a long illness. Semi-retired, Mr. Balfour worked as a carpenter the last several years. He had been a farmer in St. Clair Township where he was born March 13, 1885. He was the son of the late Geroge W. and Lucetta Balfour. Mr. Balfour married Miss Jeanette Droulard, Feb. 28, 1906. Mrs. Balfour died in 1948. A member of the First Methodist church, St. Clair, Mr. Balfour belonged to the Evergreen lodge No 9, F. & A.M.; St. Clair chapter NO. 12, RAM, and Cornell chapter No. 93, OES. He is survived by three daughters, Miss Katherine Balfour, St. Clair; Mrs. H. D. Carl, San Francisco, Calif., and Mrs. Arthur Weinland, Carlisle, Pa.; two sons, Donald Balfour, Dallas, Tex., and Robert Balfour, Columbus, O.; three sisters, Mrs. Carrie Hartlein and Mrs. Fred Simons, St. Clair, and Mrs. Floyd Simons, Hudson; a brother, Russell Balfour, St. Clair; 12 grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Remains will be taken to the First Methodist church Saturday from the T. R. Bower funeral home. Funeral services will be at 3:30 p.m. with Rev. Frank Hartley, pastor of the church. Officiating. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery. Evergreen lodge NO,. 9, F. & A.M., will conduct graveside services."

William Balkwill
William Balkwill, alderman of the Third ward, died at his home, 720 Elk, at shortly after 12 Tuesday. Mr. Balkwill was taken ill about six weeks ago but was able to be about and attended meetings of the council up to two weeks ago. Stomach trouble is assigned as the cause of his death. Deceased was in his 29th year and had resided in Port Huron a good deal of his life, following the business of carpenter. He was the son [of] Thomas Balkwill and was well known throughout the city, both in business and political life. He is survived by a father, mother and one sister, Anna Balkwill."

Mrs. E. Ballamy
"We have been enabled to gather the following additional facts with regard to the death of Mrs. E. Ballamy aged 64 years, whose death occurred in Bay City, Tuesday, March 31. She was born at Beechamwell, Norfolk Co., England, June 20, 1827 and in 1836 came to America and to St. Clair, in 1861 where she resided up to last January when she went to live with her daughter, Mrs. W. H. Nickless in Bay City. Her husband died in September, 1878. Her remains were brought to this city last Thursday and the funeral service held on Friday afternoon from the M. E. church of which she was a faithful member, and her body laid to rest in the city cemetery. Eight children survive her, all being present at the funeral. Those present from abroad were Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Nickless, Mr. and Mrs. A. R Bush, of Bay City; C. S. Ballamy, Omaha, Neb.; A. R. Ballamy, Detroit; her brothers, Robert and Ira Spicer, of Exeter. The family and relatives have the heartfelt sympathy of a large circle of friends in their great loss."

Leonard E. Ballentine
"Port Huron - Leonard Edwin Ballentine, 92, of Port Huron, died Thursday, Aug. 3, 2000 in Tawas City. He was born March 6, 1908 in Ann Arbor and was a life long Port Huron area resident. He married Thelma May Dobson July 10, 1936 in Cass City. She died Nov. 23, 1991. Mr. Ballentine retired from the automobile industry after 25 years. He was a member of Washington Avenue United Methodist Church, the Council on Aging and a member and past Noble Grand of International Order of Odd Fellows Lodge #138. He was a regular euchre player with the Monday afternoon Palmer Park Euchre Group and the Port Huron Senior Center Euchre Group on Wednesday and Saturday. He is survived by two sons, Mr. and Mrs. James (Sue) Ballentine of Branson, Missouri and Paul Ballentine and his fiancee' Roberta Erker of Lake in the Hills, Illinois; two daughters, Mr. and Mrs. Bob (Katherine) Johnson of Port Huron and Mr. and Mrs. Robert (Sharon) Wolvin of Jeddo; a son-in-law, James Lincoln of Lakeport; 11 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; a special cousin, Irene Heyer of Port Huron; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Roselyn Lincoln; three brothers; and a sister. Visitation will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. today and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday in Pollock-Randall Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 8, 2000 in Pollock-Randall Funeral Home. The Rev. Susan K. Freeland will officiate. Burial will be in Christian Memorial Cultural Center, Peck. Pallbearers will be his grandsons, Dale Ballentine, James Ballentine Jr., Shawn Herron, Steven Wolvin, and Douglas and Jeffrey Lincoln. Memorials may be made to Meals on Wheels or the Council on Aging."

"Smiths Creek - Peter J. Balon, 72, of 784 N. Mayer Road, died Thursday, Oct. 23, 1980, in the home of his brother after a long illness. He was born Sept. 10, 1908, in Chicopee Falls, Mass., and had lived in Smiths Creek most of his life. Mr. Balon worked his own farm at 956 Burns Road form many years. He was a former guard at Prestolite. He is survived by a sister, Antionatt Burns, of Emmett; and his brother, Stanley J., of Smiths Creek. Services will be hled at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Arthur Smith funeral Homes-South Chapel, Port Huron. The Rev. Victor Studaker will officiate. Burial will be in Caswell Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Daniel Palermo, Philip and Michael Balon, Kenneth Dunsmore, Jack Burns and Kenneth Valentine. Funeral home visiting hours begin at 12:30 p.m. today. "St. Clair, June 22 - Louis Bark, 78, a lifetime resident of St. Clair county, died Monday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Erwin Pollex, Thornapple street. Mr. Bark was born near Adair, May 11, 1876, son of the late William and Minnie Bark. He sailed on the Great Lakes for many years. He and Bertha Baumgarten were married Dec. 24, 1902 and lived in St. Clair a number of years. For the last 22 years they lived on a small farm on St. Clair Highway. Mr. Bark was ill the last two years. He is survived by his widow, two daughters, Mrs. Pollex and Mrs. Russell Ketchum, both of St. Clair; a brother, William Bark, East China Township; a sister, Mrs. Charles Lipke, Detroit; five grandchildren; and two foster daughters, Mrs. George Emig, Port Huron and Mrs. Cyril Bark, Au Train, Mich. "Adair - Three deaths in this community during the past week has cast a gloom over the village. Edward Barnard, sr., died on Saturday, Oct. 11, of cancer. Wm. Bark, ex-postmaster, died on Monday, also of cancer, and Julius Schmidt, a prominent young man, is supposed to have been lost when the steamer C. B. Lockwood foundered on Lake Erie in Monday's gale. "East China Twp. - George Ernest Barnes, 62, of East China, found his key to tranquility and valiantly gave into his fight against colon cancer on Tuesday, Sept. 21, 1999. His battle was violent before he reached his peace and he is now in the arms of Our Lord. Mr. Barnes was born in Port Huron on Sept. 5, 1937, a son to Delbert and Thelma Barnes. He married Ruth A. Haggerty on July 13, 1985 in Memphis, Mich. He was employed by South Park Welding in Marysville as plant manager, and served them for 31 years. George was a member of the National Rifle Association and was an avid hunter. He participated in bow hunting and muzzle and rifle hunting. He loved gardening and working in the yard. Surviving are his wife, Ruth; eight children, Carrie Kay (Gary Ames) Barnes of Port Huron, Doug (Kathy) Barnes of Smiths Creek. Becky Jo Macy of Port Huron, Louis (Paula) Gray of Eastpointe, Cory (Kunie) Gray of Warren, Victoria (Marcus) Thurston of Wyoming, Paul (Olga) Gray of Wyoming and Monica Gray of East China Twp.; six brothers, Harley (Caroline) of West Branch, Larry (Pam) of Prescott, Ron (Ina) of Ruby, Lyle (Janice), Bob (Linda) and Delbert (Pam), all of Port Huron: two sisters, Wanda (Russell) Ingles of Lapeer and Sandra Barnes of Smiths Creek; 13 grandchildren; and mother-in-law, Delma Haggerty of Memphis. Services are Saturday at noon in the Bower-Rose Funeral Home, Marine City, with the Rev. Lyle Reynolds officiating. Helen Cawood Barrett
"Fort Gratiot - Helen Cawood Barrett, 80, of Fort Gratiot Township went to be with the Lord on Saturday, Dec. 18, 1999. She was born Sept. 13, 1919, in Brown City, to John and Merle Benedict Cawood. She was a 1937 graduate of Port Huron High School and received a bachelor of science degree from Michigan State College in 1941. While at Michigan State, she was a member and past president of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority. Helen was an active member of Grace Episcopal Church, having served on the vestry. She was also past president of the Organ Guild and her prayer group at church. She was a member of the Port Huron Garden Club, Port Huron Golf Club, Association of the Mentally Retarded, Port Huron and Mercy Hospital Auxiliaries, and Port Huron Town Hall, where she was a past president. At Port Huron Hospital, she did volunteer work in the surgical lounge. Helen was also a former member of the Lakeshore Ladies Bowling League. She is survived by her five children Thomas C. (Sandi) Barrett of Port Huron, Patricia (Charles) Strehl of Omaha, Neb., Charles E. Barrett of Fort Gratiot Township, Judy A (Michael Jr.) Chargot of Port Huron and Barbara (Dennis) Vollmer of Fort Gratiot Township; seven grandchildren, Charles Jason Strehl and Melissa Strehl, Gerry and his fiance, Denyelle Tacie, Jaclynne Barrett, Christee and Michelle Chargot and Michael Raetzel; her loving companion, Linda Genaw; and her many friends. She was a loving and devoted mother and grandmother and will be missed by her family and friends. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 22, 1999, in Grace Episcopal Church. The Rev. "North Street - John Alan Barrett, 24, of 4240 Keewahdin Road, died Friday evening in Mercy Hospital. He was born July 31, 1950, in Port Huron, and lived here all his life. Mr. Barrett was a truck broker. He graduated from Port Huron Northern High School in 1968. From 1969 to 1971 he served in the U.S. Navy Seabees, and was a combat veteran of Vietnam. He was a member of Sparlingville Community Church, Teamsters Union Local 339, and May O'Brien Post No. 8465, Veterans of Foreign Wars. He married Beverly Weston Dec. 19, 1970, in Port Huron. He is survived by his wife; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Barrett, Jeddo; a brother, Gordon Barrett Jr., North Branch, and a sister, Mrs. Betsy Schef, North Street. Jonathan Barron
"Revolutionary War soldier honored - St. Clair - Jonathan Barron was honored Tuesday, although he died Dec. 2, 1834. His grave in Hillside Cemetery, St. Clair, was dedicated in a ceremony by the Louisa St. Clair Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) as the only located grave in St. Clair County of a Revolutionary War veteran. St. Clair Mayor Raymond L. Gellein declared Tuesday Jonathan Barron Day. Tuesday was the 200th anniversary (Aug. 16, 1777) of the Battle of Benningron, Vt., in which Barron fought at the age of 17 years. Descendants of Barron attending the ceremony were William B. Ewart, St. Clair; Stephen McCracken, art's grandson who is home from Brazil where his parents are missionaries; Dr. H. Granger Ewart's, U.S. Nary retired; Mrs. Laurel Lydy, Dr. Ewart's daughter; Mrs. Ellen Meno's daughter, Mrs. Stephanie Meno Minor and Mrs. Ellen Meno's grandson, Matthew Teeple. Mrs. Robert W. Sawyer Jr., regent of Louisa St. Clair Chapter, introduced the speakers and the DAR chapters participating in the ceremony. They were Boy Scout Troop 294 of St. Clair; Mrs. James Eastern, vice president general, National Society, DAR; Mrs. Maxwell E. Hunt, Michigan first vice regent, DAR; Miss Marion E. Morse, state chaplain, DAR; Mrs. George F. Ryckman, state senior president; Mrs. William c. Sued, Louisa St. Clair Chapter historian; Mrs. John E. DeWald, Louisa St. Clair Chapter member who researched the graves location. Mrs. Hunt explained that the locating and marking of a Revolutionary War soldier's grave was started by the National Society of the DAR between 1897-98. Data on graves either located or marked are reported to the Recorder General each year and a report of these activities are submitted to the Smithsonian Institution, which includes the information with its report to the U. S. Congress. Locating and marking of graves was started in Michigan by the DAR in 1900. To date, 257 graves have been located in Michigan and 195 have been marked. Most graves have been marked before 1930 (the Barron grave was marked in 1904 by the St. Clair Ot-Si-Ke-Ta Chapter, although not dedicated), but occasionally unmarked graves are found, Mrs. Hunt said. Jonathan Barron and his wife, Thankful Minor, came to St. Clair in 1813 to farm land. He was born in Reading, Mass.., June 30, 1760, and enlisted in the Revolutionary War under his father, a captain in the New Hampshire militia. Barron was put on the military pension rolls at the age of 74 in 1833. His yearly pension was $57.22. He collected $171.66 before he died at the age of 77 in 1834."

He came to this country from England some 30 years ago, and had made his home in this city since March 1891. His death was caused by paralysis and general disability. "St. Clair - Alberta Arnold Bassett, 98, of St. Clair, a former resident of Marine City, died Wednesday, Nov. 5, 1997. She was born in Lakeport on May 15, 1899, the daughter of Hugh and Eve (Burtch) Streeter. She married George Bassett on Aug 9, 1967 in Clay Twp. He preceded her in death. She is survived by her son, Richard (Dora) Swiney of Hope Sound, Fla.; two daughters, Laurraine (Martin) Dewey of East China and Jean Eaves of New Port Richey, Fla.; her step-daughter, Rosemarie Lozon of Algonac; her sister, Hazel Davidson of Bradenton, Fla.; four grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and 12 great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services are 11 a.m. Saturday in the Bower-Rose Funeral Home, Marine City with Pastor William Blount officiating. Burial will be in Rosehill Cemetery, East China. Visiting hours are 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday. Memorials may be directed to the American Cancer Society."

Nora M. Batchelor
"Yale - Nora M. Batchelor, 82, of Yale, formerly of Melvin and Sandusky, died Friday, May 19, 2000, at Medilodge of Yale. She was born in Newberry on May 28, 1917, the daughter of George and Rose Stamour Robinson. Nearly 66 years ago, Russell L. Batchelor and Nora were married in Melvin, Oct. 27, 1934. Nora cooked for 19 years at the former Meharg's Dairy Bar, and was employed ten years in Imlay City for Hamill Manufacturing. She loved cooking and working with crafts. Surviving is her loving husband "Russ;" daughters and sons-in-law, Rose and Willard Kipp of Yale, Darlene and Tom Rapley of Lapeer, Joanne and Jerry Muxlow of Brown City and Sandra and Larry Kile of Texas; eight grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; sister, Julia Lung of Peck; and nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death were brothers, Leonard, Milton, Glen, Donald, Carl, Kenneth and Howard; and sister, Iva Sharpe. A funeral service in appreciation of the life, family and friends of Nora will be celebrated at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Kaatz Funeral Directors, Yale, with burial in Elmwood Cemetery, Yale. The Rev. Steve Howell, pastor of Trinity Missionary Church, Yale, and Willard Williams will officiate. Visitng hours are 6 to 8 p.m. today and 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday. "Armada - Claude Bates, 91, of 74049 Fulton St., died today in Fair Acres Nursing Home after a lengthy illness. He was born April 21, 1887, in Richmond Township and was a lifelong Armada area resident. He married Mabel Goldsworthy in 1910. She died in 1946. He married Gertrude Barrington in 1950. She died in 1977. Mr. Bates was a U.S. Army veteran of World War I. He was a retired farmer. He was a member of Armada Congregational United Church of Christ. He was a past member of the Richmond Drum and Bugle Corps. Mr. Bates is survived by several nieces and nephews. Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in Tiffany-Young Funeral Home. The Rev. Philip Stahl, pastor of Armada Congregational United Church of Christ, will officiate. Burial will be in Willow Grove Cemetery."

"Armada, July 8 - Mrs. Maybelle Eldora Bates, 59, died in her home here Sunday after several months illness. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Bates home. Rev. William Pryor, Richmond Methodist pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in Willow Grove Cemetery here. She is survived by her husband, Claude Bates; a sister, Mrs. Jennie Westrick, St. Clair, and a brother, Harry Goldsworthy, Battle Creek. Mrs. Bates was a charter member and officer of Burke-Sullivan post, No. 125, American Legion auxiliary, Richmond, and a member of the Armada Congregational church. She was the daughter of George and Eldora Goldsworthy, and was born at Otter Lake, Mich., Jan. 7, 1887."

George Bauer
"George Bauer, son of John Bauer, died in Detroit last Thursday of pneumonia. He was brought to his home near this city Friday and his funeral was conducted by Rev. Fr. Maschino at St. Mary's church Saturday morning. Mr. Bauer was 22 year old, and was well thought of. He had spent the past season sailing and was about to return to this city when he was attacked with the disease which caused his death."

John Bauer
"SUICIDE BY HANGING - Last Friday at about 8 o’clock, John Bauer, a farmer of northwest Mussey, aged about 65, after having put his son off the farm in October and married again in November and then having expressed himself as regretting both acts, put an end to his distress of mind by stepping off into eternity from the top of the rack in his sheep shed, a rope about the neck collecting the fall.

The body hung where found all day until when, at about 6 o’clock that evening, coroner Faulk and Deputy Sheriff Austion of Port Huron arrived, decided it was a clear case of suicide, and turned the body over to the undertaker Walter.

The funeral services were held from the Evangelical church on Monday, Dec 23. Dr. Fisher officiating, and interment was made in the adjoining cemetery.

Relatives from Flint and Imlay failed in an attempt to hold up the funeral but made an unpleasant scene.

The story of the discovery of the tragedy briefly, is as follows:

The wife told that Bauer was out the night before the tragedy until 10 o’clock, when questioned he said he had spent the evening at the home of Chas. J. Bremman; that on the morning of the tragedy Bauer went to the barn presumably to do the chores; when he did not return to the house at the usual time she called to him then went to look for him; not finding him she went to the home of Mr. Breeman, but he was not there, and so Mr. Breeman went back to the Bauer home to clear up the mystery, and he found Bauer hanging farm an overlay in the sheep shed. The family doctor Buck and the sheriff’s office were notified:

The doctor was the first officer to arrive; the sheriff’s office notified Deputy Al Brink to take the Justice of the peace with him and investigate the causes of death. Brink took Justice Wm. Hunter.

While these officers were making a careful investigation of the premises, the following men were there and agreed with the finding of the officers: Rev. Facher and Mc Cue, Chris Water, Albert Kettlehutt, Chas. Bremman and others. The officers decided that there were no suspicious circumstances connected with the death and that it was a clear case of suicide. They were ready then and there to have the body cut down and turned over to the undertaker.

Why the Body Hung Till Night -

The son Will was called up at Capac and notified. Will was not satisfied, and asked for time to get out to the farm with his doctor, which was granted. Then the officers called up the sheriff’s office and were told the son should be satisfied - that if he wanted an inquest he could have it by putting up security for the costs.

The officers remained on the premises until noon, and then returned to town, leaving the body hanging, as the son was not satisfied and there was a prospect of an inquiry; in town the family doctor refused to certify the cause of death was suicide.

Then the son, in agreement with the local officials called by the sheriff’s office and the coroner’s office and had the proceedings delayed until those officers arrived on the early evening train.

Coroner Faulk and Sheriff Austin made a careful investigation, decide it was a clear case of suicide, then upholding the decision of the local officers, and certified the body to be taken to the undertaker.

After accepting the decision of the corner and the deputy sheriff, the son did fine. He stood by the widow, his step-mother, during the disturbance at the funeral, looked for her comfort and the farm chores, and has made a peaceable settlement of the property which gets her $200 in money. He is also getting her comfortably settled in a home in this village. We say that’s netting the part of a man."

Esther Pauline Bauman
"Miss Esther Pauline Bauman, 47, 512 Cass street, died Sunday in her home after a long illness. She was born July 9, 1900, in St. Clair and was graduated by St. Clair High School in 1918 and Cleary College, Ypsilanti, in 1919. Miss Baumann went to work soon after leaving college at Diamond Crystal Salt company and worked there until her illness. She was an organst and Sunday school teacher at St. Peter's Lutheran church for many years. She leaves a sister, Emma, six brothers, Ernest, Hugo, and Albert, all of St. Clair; Richard, Marine City, Frederick, Dearborn, and Carl, Detroit, an uncle Emil Bauman, who made his home with the sisters, and numerous nieces and nephews. The remains were taken from her home Wednesday in St. Peter's church for services at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Gustave W. Lenz, pastor officiating. Burial in Hillside Cemetery. Pallbearers, men from the Diamond Crystal Salt company's offices were Miss Bauman worked for over 17 years, were Fred Dunkel, Robert Ball, Charles Hendricks, Fauster Engelgau, Albert Schroeder, and Kenneth Edwards."

"Richmond, July 1 - John L. Bauman, 75, resident of Richmond 42 years, died Monday in his home, 68010 Mert street, after a 5 1/2 year illness. He was born in Columbus Township, son of the late William and Fredericka Bauman. He married Margaret Stocks in 1909, and the couple moved to Richmond shortly after. Mr. Bauman was a member of the First Evangelical and Reformed church. Surviving are his widow, a son, Clarence, Mt. Clemens, and a daughter, Mrs. Erva Tevo, also of Mt. Clemens, and seven grandchildren. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in his home and at 2:30 p.m. in the First Evangelical and Reformed church. Rev. Robert Kuebler, pastor, will officiate, and burial will be in Richmond Cemetery."

"New Haven, May 11 - Earl Baumgarten, 40, died Tuesday at his desk in the Graustark Hotel here. The hotel proprietor is survived by his widow, Irene; a daughter, Bonnie and a son, Lynwood Baumgarten; his mother, Mrs. Ida Baumgarten, Richmond; two sisters, Mrs. Paul Marinier, Richmond and Mus. Raymond Lutz, Warren, and a brother, Charles Baumgarten, St. Clair Shores. He was a native of Richmond. Funeral arrangements are incomplete. He was a member of New Haven Businessmen’s association, rotary Club, Macomb County Sportsman’s club, and charter member a secretary of newly organized Lions club. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday in St. James Evangelical and Reformed church Richmond, with Rev. John Perl, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Richmond Cemetery. The remains will be in the Wills funeral home here until Saturday noon when they will be removed to the church."

"Richmond - Ida Baumgarten, 91, Port Richey, Fla., died Monday in Port Richey after a long illness. She was born June 9, 1886, in Casco Township. She lived in the Richmond area for many years before moving to Port Richey. She married William E. Baumgarten in 1907, in Detroit. He died in 1946. Mrs. Baumgarten was a member of the First United church of Christ, the church Women's Guild, and chapter 168, OES, Richmond. She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Ray Lutz, Warren, and Mrs. Gilbert Mariner, Port Richey; a sister, Mrs. John Keller, Richmond; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday in the Hensch Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, Richmond. The Rev. John Baumgartner, pastor of the First United Church of Christ, will officiate. "St. Clair, April 29 - Frank H. Bazo, 90, of 34350 Ann Arbor Trail, Plymouth, former St. Clair business man and resident of Port Huron, died early Wednesday in the home of his son, Francis W. Bazo, following a one year illness. While a resident here, Mr. Bazo operated a shoe store. Later he moved to Port Huron where he worked for the Ballentine Dry Goods company. He is survived by three sons Francis W., Plymouth; Michael, of Martinsdale, Ind., and Theodore, a member of the U. S. Navy; a daughter, Mrs. Grace LeDuc, of Arizona; two nephews, George and William Hurst, both of St. Clair; four nieces, Mrs. Edith Montgomery and Mrs. George Meiselbach, both of St. Clair; Mrs. Herman Gracey, Smiths Creek, and Mrs Ernest Green, Detroit, and four grandchildren. "WOOLEN MILLS WORKER DIES - Rites Wednesday In Yale For Philip D. Beadle - Yale, Feb. 5 - Philip D. Beadle, 79, died Sunday in his home, 113 Mary street, after an illness of three months. The remains are in the family residence. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Trinity Methodist church. Rev. Howard Spitnale will officiate. Burial will be in Elmwood cemetery. Mr. Beadle is survived by his widow, Mrs. Elza Retta Beadle, a daughter, Mrs. Grant Welch, Smiths Creek; two sons, George and Erwin Beadle, both of Yale, and a brother, Ira Beadle, North Branch. He was born June 22, 1865, in Corinth, Ont., and with his parents moved to a farm near Yale when six weeks old. He was employed 25 years in Yale Woolen Mills. Mr. and Mrs. Beadle observed their golden wedding April 2, 1940."

"St. Clair, July 26 [1954] - Mrs. Louise Beardsley, widow of George Beardsley, died Saturday in Port Huron Hospital after a week's illness. Mrs. Beardsley lived at 2441 Tenth street, Port Huron, the last three years. She lived the rest of her life in St. Clair. She was born Sept. 15, 1877 in Casco Township, daughter of August and Rosina Werner. Mr. Beardsley died in 1947. Harold J. Beatty
"Sandusky - Harold J. "Toots" Beatty, 80, of Sandusky passed away Sunday, July 2, 2000, at St. Mary's Hospital in Saginaw, after a short illness. Mr. Beatty was born May 8, 1920, in Sandusky, the son of the late Lemuel and Sadie Read Beatty. He served in the U.S. Army during World War from 1941 to 1945. He married Gerry Hunt Feb. 15, 1947, in Toledo, Ohio. Harold was a active member of the American Legion for more than 50 years. He was employed with Detroit Edison Co. for 32 years until his retirement in 1978. Harold is survived by his wife, Gerry Beatty; three sons, John (Denise) Beatty of Mio, Lee Beatty of Sandusky and Doug (Julie) Beatty of Sandusky; one daughter, Marilyn Solis of Sandusky; one brother, Calvin Beatty of Dayton, Ohio; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Paul Beatty, who passed in 1979; four brothers; and four sisters. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 5, 2000, in the Marsh Funeral Chapel in Sandusky. The Rev. John A. Allan will officiate. Interment will be in the Greenwood Cemetery, Sandusky. "Clay Twp. - John Joseph "Bun" Beatty, 84, of Clay Township died Thursday, April 27, 2000, in Faith Medical Center. He was born June 30, 1915, on Harsens Island. He married Margaret Sharrow on Nov. 6, 1936, in Algonac. She died Feb. 26, 1985. He graduated from Algonac High School in 1933. He was an avid hunter and was a carpenter. He is survived by his daughter, Patricia (Alton) Avers; his son, Kevin (Cheri); his special daughter, Annie Cronce, all of Algonac; ten grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; his sisters, Mary Farver, Dorothy Bolton of California and Geraldine (Robert) Abel of Warren; his brother, Richard Beatty of Nevada; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, John D. and Dela (Busha) Beatty; his daughter, Judith Creameans in 1995; and his brothers, Thomas, Fred, Robert and James. Funeral services will be at 2:30 p.m. Monday, May 1, 2000, in Gilbert Funeral Home, Algonac. Father Douglas Bignall of St. Catherines Catholic Church will officiate. "Marine City - The funeral services of Mrs. Daniel Beauchamp of Merrill's who died on Sunday evening will be held Wednesday at 3 o'clock at the schoolhouse, near Smith's cemetery, in the vicinity of Mrs. Beauchamp's old home. Mrs. Beauchamp who was ?9 years old, had been ill for several weeks suffering from a stroke of paralysis and during that time has been most devotedly cared for by her daughter, Mrs. Bert and Mrs. Robert Beauchamp. Margaret Kliemann Beauvais
"East China Twp. - Margaret Kliemann Beauvais, our mother and friend, peacefully left this life to join her oldest son, Edward, on Sunday, Dec. 19, 1999. She was born in Wallaceburg, Ontario, on Jan. 6, 1911. She came to the United States at the age of 12 with her parents, Anne and George LaMarsh. She is the mother of Kenneth (Chris) Kliemann of St. Clair, Margaret (Bill) Cedar of St. Clair and Katherine (Arnold) Muehleisen of Marine City. Also surviving are her brother, William LaMarsh of Port Huron; 21 grandchildren; 45 great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her son, Edward; her husband, Edward; three great-grandchildren; her parents; and three sisters, Nora Brady, Beatrice Hamilton and Kathleen Cullen. She was married to the late Harry Hayden of St. Clair for 10 years. Even though they divorced, he remained in her heart as one of her best friends. On Feb. 10, 1975, she married Andrew Beauvais. They were happily married until Andy died in October 1996. Margaret's first job, after her husband Edward's death, was as a waitress at Henry's Restaurant in Algonac when it was little more than a hamburger bar with a gas station. She was later employed by the Detroit Gasket Co. in Marine City, where she worked for more than 30 years. Margaret was active in several service clubs including the Amici Club, Daughters of lsabella and the VFW Auxiliary. When she was younger, she loved to bowl, crochet and garden. She was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church. Services are Thursday at 9:30 a.m. in the Bower-Rose Funeral Home, Marine City, followed by a 10 a.m. Mass in Holy Cross Catholic Church. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery. Visiting in the funeral home is 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today. A rosary will be prayed at 7:30 p.m. and a Daughters of Isabella rosary will be prayed at 2:30 p.m. today. Her grandsons will serve as pallbearers. Memorials may be made to the Holy Cross Activities Center."

Mrs. Bell, who died in her home on the State Road Monday, was born June 1, 1886 in St. Clair township. She was the former Mrs. Agnes Wuest, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Anthony Wuest. "St. Clair, May 27 - Mrs. Catherine Bell, about 90, widow of John Bell and daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Michael Kelly, died today at a nursing home after a year’s illness. Mr. and Mrs. Bell lived on a farm on State road near St. Clair until Mr. Bell’s death about 15 years ago. Since then she lived with Mrs. Mary Gleason, and her brother, the late Sheridan Gleason, on their farm home on Bartlett road. She is survived by four nieces, Mrs. Ralph Langell and Mrs. O’Dell Williams, both of St. Clair; Mrs. Jack Gardiner, Waltham, Mass., and Mrs. Archie Labo, River Rouge; six nephews, Clarence Kelly and Fred Kelly, St. Clair and Al Rodier, Thomas Austin, Sherwood Kuhnlien and Jack Minter, all of Detroit. Funeral services will be at 9 a.m. Monday at the T. R. Bower funeral home and at 9:30 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic church with Rev. Harold J. Kreucher, assistant pastor, officiating. Babet Bendit
"St. Clair mourns the loss of one of its oldest and most estimable residents in the death of Mrs. Babet Bendit, Sunday. The deceased, whose maiden name was Babet Vorhous, was born Mar. 17, 1815, at Fuerth, Bavaria and when 25 years of age became Mrs. Solomon Bendit with whom she came to this country in 1840. For a time the young couple made their home in New York city, then in Detroit and finally 37 years ago moved to St. Clair where they have since resided. In her life Mrs. Bendit was of a modest, retiring, religious disposition, fond of her home and was a devoted mother with a very charitable heart who found pleasure in looking after the welfare of others. She was at one time a member of the Eastern Star and the ladies of this order as a testimonial of their esteem sent to her funeral a beautiful symbolic five colored floral star. In addition to this many floral and other tributes of respect were received by the family and a number of friends from Port Huron, Sarnia and Omaha were present at the last sad rites to this noble woman. The remains were interred Tuesday in the Woodmere cemetery, Detroit, Rabbi Kroneman delivering an excellent and appropriate discourse and paying a beautiful tribute to the worth and character of the deceased. The family desire to return their thanks to the numerous friends who so kindly aided them in caring for Mrs. Bendit during her last illness and whose many acts of attention alleviated so far as possible the sorrow of what must be necessarily a sad occasion."

Samuel Bendit
"Samuel Bendit was born in New York city, April 17, 1841 and his parents removed to Detroit in 1844 where he became a member of the Capitol school, remaining there until April, 1854, when on the removal of his parents to St. Clair he was sent to New York city to attend a private school and remained there for a year, coming to St. Clair in 1855. After attending the public schools here for a short time he was sent to the Romeo Academy at Romeo, a school which at that time had quite a noted reputation. He remained there about a year and then took a position in his father's store, becoming a partner in the firm in 1860, the firm name changing to Bendit, Schornstein & Co. Young Bendit was always popular and when twenty-one years of age accepted an invitation to become a member of Evergreen Lodge, and afterwards united with the Blue Lodge and Chapter. He also became a member of the Knights of Pythias. He took an active interest in all matters of a public nature and especially urged the importance of having a steam fire engine here which owing doubtless largely to his efforts was purchased by the city and as a mark of appreciation he was elected chief engineer of the Fire Department. He served as alderman for two or three terms, a part of the time filling the position of acting mayor. On the 19th of July, 1864, he was married to Miss Regina Hirschmann, daughter of Louis J. Hirschmann, of Detroit. He continued to reside in St. Clair, and take an active part in the business here until 1876 when he accepted a position with the Great Western and Grand Trunk Railways at Detroit, and moved to that city. In 1884 he had a stroke of paralysis and although he appeared to recover from it, there is no doubt that this was the beginning of an illness which soon rendered him an invalid so that for the last five years he has been unable to attend to business and latterly he has been confined to the house. His death occurred on Tuesday morning and he leaves a devoted father and an equally devoted wife and daughter to mourn his loss. His remains will be taken from the house to the depot this morning with Masonic services, and they will then be taken to Detroit to be laid to rest in the family lot in Woodmere Cemetery where the services will be conducted by Rabbi Grossman. The family in this hour of affliction have the hearty sympathy of their many friends who mourn the sad blow which took from the community one of its number who previous to his illness had shown unusual ability both as a businessman, and in his public and social relations. A number of friends and neighbors met at the late home of Mr. Samuel Bendit Thursday morning, where, after the Masonic services at 7:30 a.m., a delegation of masons accompanied the remains to Detroit, where they were met at the depot by the Ashley Lodge Masons, which escorted their departed brother, to the family lot at Woodmere, where he was laid to rest, with their beautiful and impressive rites, Dr. L. Grossman also reading a prayer, and making a few touching remarks. Mr. Joseph Jacobi, Mr. and Mrs. Alex, Jacobi, Mr. and Mrs. Jake Jacobi of Port Huron, Mr. and Mrs. A. Suhler, Sarnia, Mr. and Mrs. Alex Jacobi of Mt. Clemens, met at Lenox, and accompanied the family to Detroit, where at the depot, Mrs. and Mrs. Herman H. Heineman of Milwaukee, Mr. L. Herman of Cleveland, and besides the immediate relatives living in Detroit, a great many friends awaited and escorted the funeral cortege to Woodmere. Mr. and Mrs. H. H. Heineman, the later a sister of Mrs. Sam. Bendit, returned with the family and remained here until Saturday. - We hereby tender our heartfelt thanks to our friends, and also the members of the Masonic Lodge, for the kind acts and sympathy shown us during our long and great affliction. - Solomon Bendit, Regina Bendit, Cora M. Bendit."

John W. Benline
"John W. Benline Dies, Was Sick Only Two Days - John W. Benline, 60, for many years proprietor of the old German gardens at Eleventh and White streets, died early Thursday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Edwin C. McLane, 840 Oak Street. Mr. Benline was well known as the proprietor of the gardens. Death resulted from stomach illness and followed a short illness of two days. Since retiring from the management of the gardens, Mr. Benline has been employed by the D. U. R. in the Port Huron city service. Mr. Benline is survived by his daughter, his mother, Mrs. Barbara Benline and three sisters, Mrs. Frank Minne and Mrs. Sherwood Abby of St. Clair and Mrs. Fred Kresin, 1928 Eighth Street, Port Huron. Funeral service will be held at the residence of Mrs. McLane at 3 p.m. Saturday. On account of illness in the family, the services will be private. Burial will be in Lakeside cemetery."

Mrs. Berka is survived by her husband, John A. Berka of Elkhart, Ind.; daughter and son-in-law, John W. (Susan McKinnkey) Berka of Bloomingdale, Ill.; a daughter, Jill Berka Palmer of Orland Park, Ill.; a daughter, Janet S. Berka of New York City; five grandchildren, Scott, Christine, Kevin Berka and Derek and Troy Palmer; a brother and sister-in-law, Walter B. and Judy Redmond of Port Huron; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Barbara and Robert Baker of North Fort Myers, Fla.; and three nephews. "St. Clair - Harry E. Bickley 75, died April 5 [1983] in River District Hospital, East China Township, after a short illness. He was born April 26, 1907 in England. He married Sadie Hughes May 9, 1931, in Marine City. Mr. Bickley was a lifelong area resident and farmer. He was a member of St. Matthew's United Church of Christ, Adair. He is survived by his wife; three sons, Vern, St. Clair, Dale, Richmond, and Robert, Coarsegold, Calif.; a brother, Oliver "Jim" Bickley, Sterling Heights; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Funeral services were held April 8 in St. Matthew's United Church of Christ, Adair. The Rev. Jose Malayang, pastor, officiated. Arrangements were handled by the Merlin L. "Port Huron - Dewey F. Bigelow, 85, of 1222 16th St., died Saturday, June 16, 1984, in Mercy Hospital, Port Huron. He was born Oct. 28, 1898 in Barreville, Pa. He lived in Port Huron for 50 years. He married Verta I. Harms on June 19, 1928, in Pontiac. Mr. Bigelow was retired from General Motors Co. in Flint and was a retired member of the United Auto Workers Local 326, Flint. Previously he worked at Fead Knitting Mill in Port Huron. He also served in the U.S. Navy. He is a member of Colonial Woods Missionary Church. Mr. Bigelow is survived by his wife; a daughter, Karen A. Green; a son-in-law, Albert J. Green; and granddaughters, Kathy and Debra Green, all of Port Huron. Bigger was found hnaging by his belt on a fence at the Little League ball field in St. Clair. He was pronounced dead at the scene by Dr. William Bowden, Marine City, a county medical examiner. Bigger was taken to the Colonial Chapel Funeral Home, St. Clair."

She was born in Ashtabula, Ohio on July 26, 1947 a daughter to Frederick and Emma (Tobias) Ouellette. She married Donald R. Biland in Holy Cross Catholic Church, Marine city, on November 8, 1968. Mrs. Biland was a member of Holy Cross Parish. She enjoyed reading, cooking, baking, and being with her grandchildren and other family member. She will be sadly missed by her family and friends. Surviving are her husband, Donald R.; children, Angela (Lance) Aures of Marine City, Candace (William) Spencer of Fair Haven, and Donald R. II of East China; grandchildren, Lauren and Colby Aures and Cameron Spencer; mother, Emma Ouellette of Marine City; brother, Frederick (Carolyn) Ouellette of Marine City; sister, Nancy (Anthony) Schweihofer of St. Clair; mother-in-law, Anna Biland of Ohio; and many nieces, nephews, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law. Mr. Biscorner was employed by Vogel Industries, Marine City, for the past four years and previously was with Sta-Kool. He enjoyed fishing, snowmobiling and motorcross racing. "Bloomingdale - Elizabeth E. Bishop, 73, passed away Sunday, March 31, 2002, in her home. Elizabeth was born Sept. 2, 1928, in Detroit the daughter of Arthur and Esther Bishop Engler. On Oct. 7, 1949, in Covington, Ky., Elizabeth was united in marriage to Gilbert E. Bishop, who survives. Also surviving are three daughters, Lois (Verel) Bell, Kathy (Tom) Conley and Maelene Bishop; two sons, Richard (Doty) Bishop and Roland (Jackie) Bishop; daughter in law Kim Bishop; 15 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a sister Pauline. She was preceeded in death by two sons, Robert and Keith Bishop, and a brother, Arthur Engler. Elizabeth was a member of Bangor Free Methodist Church. She married Roy E. Bishop Feb. 8, 1946, in Port Huron. Mrs. Bishop was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and a former member of the Legion of Mary. Her life was dedicated to her family, her husband, her children and especially her beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She is survived by her husband, Roy E. Bishop of Port Huron; three daughters, Mr. & Mrs Gary (Cindy) Ward of Marysville, Chris S. Kelp of Jackson, Cathleen M. Bishop of Port Huron; a son, Mr. & Mrs. Roy M. (Vicki) Bishop of Fort Gratiot; 10 grandchildren, Julie E. Jeffrey S., Gary Jr., David E., Christopher Lou, Roy M. "Yale - Robert H. Bishop, 80, of 204 Kennefic Street, Yale, died Monday in Yale Medical Care Center. Mr. Bishop was born Oct 24, 1893 in Saginaw. He had lived in Yale for the last 44 years. Mr. Bishop managed grocery stores in both Yale & Lakeport until his retirement. Mr. Bishop served in the US Marines during WWI in France. While in the service he was wounded & awarded the Purple Heart. He was also awarded the Croix de Guerre & 3 battle stars. Mr. Bishop was past commander of the Yale American Legion Post #320. He was a life member of Port Huron Chapter #12, DAV. He was also past commander of the Port Huron Marine Corp League. He married Ella M. Ward, Mar 4, 1921, at Cass City. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1971. William Blain
"St. Clair, April 15 - William Blain, 93, a resident of St. Clair more than 60 years, died Tuesday in Amra Nursing home, St. Clair. Mr. Blain was born in Canada, Feb. 17, 1860 and came to Oscoda with his parent s as a small boy. A teamster, Mr. Blain hauled logs to the Oscoda river during the lumbering days and, after moving to St. Clair, drove teams for the Great Lakes Engineering company at their now defunct shipyard here, and for the Diamond Crystal Salt company. He then conducted a transfer business under his own name for a number of years before his retirement. He made his home with a son, Clarence W. Blain, 606 North Fifth street, St. Clair. He is survived by another son, Capt. Lawrence Blain, St. Ignace; two daughters, Mrs. Edwin O. Heythaler, St. Clair, and Mrs. Walter Meiselbach, Detroit; 15 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. Remains are in the L. C. Friederichs and Son funeral home where Rosary devotions will be conducted at 8 p.m. Wednesday by the Rosary society of St. Mary's Catholic church and the daughters of Isabella, and at 8 p.m. Thursday by the Knights of Columbus and men of the parish. Funeral services will be at 9:30 a.m. Friday in the funeral home and at 10 a.m. in St. Mary's church with Rev. Edward J. Kromenaker, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery."

"Fort Gratiot Twp. - Christopher A. Blatt, 89, of Fort Gratiot Township died Thursday, June 2, 2000. He was born Sept. 27, 1910, in Flynn Township, Sanilac County, to the late Christopher W. and Janet "Nettie" (Murray) Blatt. He married Louise Victoria Klaus on September 3, 1932. She died June 8, 1993. Mr. Blatt was a graduate of Michigan State Normal College at Ypsilanti and taught school in Michigan for 42 years, 12 in Sanilac County and 30 years in the Port Huron Area School District. He was a member of the St. Clair County Teachers Credit Union, now Educational & Associates Credit Union, for more than 35 years. He served on the board of directors for 30 years and ten years as president. He was an active member of the Blue Water Free Methodist Church. Mr. Blatt enjoyed gardening. He is survived by a son, Mr. and Mrs. Dwight (Velma) Blatt of Fort Gratiot; three daughters, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph (Mary Ann) Westbrook of Smiths Creek, Mr. and Mrs. Robert (Ruth) Stone of Birmingham, Ala., and Mr. and Mrs. William (Janet) Wurzel of Berrien Center; eleven grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren and a great-great-granddaughter; special friend, Eleanor Frasier; and several nieces and nephews. "Richmond - Earl A. Block, 69, of 7735 Gratiot, died unexpectedly Thursday in Port Huron Hospital. He was born June 4, 1904, in Detroit. He and Cecelia Nowosad, Hamtramck, were married June3, 1933. Block retired in 1969 from Chris-Craft Corporation, Algonac, where he worked for 37 years. He is survived by his widow; a son, Earl Block, Richmond; five daughters, Mrs. Geraldine Mayhew, Mrs. Juanita Dandron and Mrs. Caroline Patterson, all of St. Clair, Mrs. Bertha Dandron, Kingston, and Mrs. Georgina Ketelhut, Culpepper, VA.,; 20 grandchildren and a great grandchild; a sister, Mrs. Margaret Harsch, Richmond, and a brother, John Block, Brighton. The remains will be in St. Clair Highway Colonial Chapel Funeral Home, St. Clair, after 3 p.m. Saturday. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday in the funeral home. Rev. Jerry Sisson, pastor of First Baptist Church, St. Clair, will officiate. Burial will be in Kittredge Cemetery, Snyderville. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church building fund."

Mildred Blumer
"St. Clair - Mildred A. Blumer, 87, formerly of St. Clair, died Saturday, Jan. 15, 2000, in Lapeer General Hospital. She was born Sept. 12, 1912. She married Fred Blumer on Dec. 24, 1935. He died March 30, 1986. Mildred is survived by five sons, Wayne (Joy), David (Darlene), Larry (Rhoda), Paul (Lisa) and Roger (Ruth); 18 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; and a sister, Grace (Glenn) Peterson. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Dan and Roland. Visitation is from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the L.C. Friederichs and Son Funeral Home, St. Clair. Funeral services are 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery, St. Clair. Memorials may be made to Flint Crisis Pregnancy Service."

"Stephen Bodin who has worked as a ship-carpenter in St. Clair for the last thirty years died of consumption after a lingering illness on Monday aged fifty-six years. The funeral services were held at the Catholic church yesterday morning."

George Boeckman
"George Boeckman, son of Chas. Boeckman, died Monday morning, Dec. 12, at 5:30 o'clock, at his parents home, from that dread disease which has taken from us a large number of our young people. He was born in this city, Dec. 15, 1873, and with the exception of a short time spent in Detroit learning the barber's trade, he had always remained with his parents. Shortly after his return from Detroit he accepted a position in G. Strauss & Son's grocery store, where he remained until last August when he was unable to work longer, and gradually grew worse and although he was confined to his bed but one day he suffered much pain. His funeral was held in the Lutheran church, Wednesday, Dec. 14, and was largely attended by his former school-mates and friends, Rev. H. W. Schroeder officiating. Mr. and Mrs. Boeckman desire to express their heartfelt thanks to the many friends and neighbors, who so kindly assisted during the illness and after the death of their beloved son."

Jack D. Boegner
"Marlette - John (Jack) David Boegner, age 72, of Marlette died Friday, June 23, 2000, in his home on Germania Road, Marlette. Jack was born to the late William and Lillian Boegner of Marlette on Oct. 14, 1927. He graduated from Marlette Community High School in 1945. Jack was a lifetime member of the Hope Lutheran Church. He was also a member of the Union 76 Gas Station board from 1970 to 1977, and served as chairman of the board. He was a member of Michigan Artificial Breeder Cooperation and sales representative for Trogan-Dekalb-Monsanto. Jack was the beloved husband and is survived by Patricia Aileen (Hall) Boegner. They were joined in marriage on May 8, 1954. His parents, William and Lillian (Fahning) Boegner, and his daughter, Jacqueline K. Boegner, preceded him in death. Jack is survived by his children, John (Laurie) Boegner of Marlette, Aileen (Rich) Thorne of Hartford, Wis., Renee K. Boegner of Marlette, Darcy (Rob Kowalewski) Boegner of Sterling Heights and Jill M. Boegner of Alexandria, Va. Jack was the proud grandfather of Christopher, Derek, Josh and Trent Boegner, A.J., Jeremy and Sheilah Parker, Micol Thorne, Tylar Kowalewski; and great-grandfather of Trey M. Parker-Brown. Surviving brothers and sisters are William Boegner of Port Huron, Catherine Boegner of Dillon, Mont., Ruth Pepper of Kanab, Utah, Ilene Buby of Dearborn, Olive Huebel of Oscoda, Lillian Chard of Decker, Jean Mason of National City and Neda Hoffman of Caro; and many nieces and nephews. Jack was an avid motorcycle enthusiast for many years and a founding member of the Lucy Thumb Motorcycle Club. Later in life his enthusiasm became games of poker with family and friends. He was a successful farmer, and a wonderful husband and father. He was loved by all whose lives he touched. A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Monday, June 26, 2000, at Hope Lutheran Church, 2510 Juhl Rd. Marlette. Memorial contributions are suggested for Hope Lutheran Church or United Hospice Services of Marlette. Arrangements are by Marsh Funeral Chapel, Marlette."

Shirley Boerckel
"Port Huron - Mrs. Shirley Boerckel, 95, of Port Huron, died in her residence Tuesday, Oct. 19, 1999. She was born July 3, 1904 on Pelee Island, Ontario, to the late Huldah and George Vander Dasson. After her marriage to Louis Boerckel in 1920, she moved to New York City. She lived in New York until 1984, when she moved to Port Huron. Mrs. Boerckel was a homemaker her entire life and, while living in Port Huron. belonged to the Golden Agers. Mrs. Boerckel is survived by her daughter, Marilyn Boyce of Port Huron: a granddaughter, Mr. and Mrs. William (Pamela) Watt of Port Huron; two great granddaughters, Mr. and Mrs. Scott (Melissa) Fleet and Stephanie Watt; and two great great granddaughters, Courtney and Allie Fleet. She was preceded in death by a brother, William Vander Dasson, in May 1944 in the Canadian Air Force; and two sisters, Ardell Vander Dasson and Juanita Sumja. A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 23, 1999, in Pollock-Randall Funeral Home, Port Huron. Dr. Richard D. Lobb will officiate. Memorials may be made to the Salvation Army."

"Word was received Wednesday of the death of Dr. James H. Bogan at Mackinac Island Tuesday night. Dr. Bogan was a resident of both Mackinac Island and Detroit and practiced in both communities. While in Detroit he lived at 96 Woodland Ave. Dr. Bogan was born May 17, 1867, at Mackinac Island. He was graduated by the University of Michigan in 1892 and later studied at the New York Polyclinic Post-Graduate School. He was a member of the Wayne County and the American Medical Associations. He leaves his wife, Katharine Nash Bogan; two daughters, Eleanor M. and Dorothy L. Bogan, and a son James J. Bogan, all of Detroit; another son, Lieut. Commander Gerald F. Bogan, attached to the U.S.S. Lexington, Long Beach, Calif., a sister, Mrs. John S. Doud, of Mackinac Island; three brothers, Dr. William J. Bogan of Chicago; Peter R. Bogan, of Mackinac Island and John R. Bogan, of Detroit, and a half brother, Edward H. Corrigan, of Chicago. Funeral services will be held in St. Anne's Church, Mackinac Island, Saturday morning. Burial will be on Mackinac Island."

Mrs. Boges was born in Port Huron Sept. 26, 1880. She is survived by her sister and a brother, William B. Kessel, Port Huron. Funeral services will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday in St. Joseph's Catholic church. Very Rev. Dean Thomas A. Connell, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in Mt. Hope cemetery. The remains are in the B. J. Karrer funeral home where members of the Christian Mothers society of St. Joseph's church, of which Mrs. Boges was a member, will meet at 7:30 p.m. today to recite the rosary."

"Port Huron - Marguerite M. Spencer Bolton, 92, of Port Huron, formerly of Capac, died Wednesday, Dec. 29, 1999. She was born June 9, 1907, in Port Huron to the late Henry and Bertha Seiwert Lemp. She married Donald G. Spencer Sr. in 1925 in Port Huron. He died Feb. 19, 1941. She married William H. Bolton on Oct. 11, 1947, in Bowling Green, Ohio. He died Dec. 25, 1986. She was a member of St. John's United Church of Christ and a life member of the Order of Eastern Star. She retired in 1956 from Prestolite Wire Co. after 21 years of service. She is survived by a son, Mr. and Mrs. Donald G. (Dorothy) Spencer Jr.; a granddaughter, Mr. and Mrs. James (Patricia) Barron, all of Peck; two great grandchildren, Stephen R. Parker of Sandusky and Mrs. Shelley R. (Pete) Bullis of Yale; two step great grandchildren, Tony Barron of Yale and Nicole Barron of Jackson; two great great grandchildren, Chase and Kylie Bullis of Yale; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Monna J. Robinson, on Jan. 22, 1999, and two sisters, Hazel McNeice and Anita Barr. George W. Boman (1952)
"George W. Boman, 81, retired mechanic and farmer, Port Huron resident some 30 years, died today in his home, 803 LaSalle boulevard, after a long illness. A native of Edenville, Mich. Mr. Boman was born May 11, 1871. He and Louise Catherman of St. Clair were married Dec. 3, 1890. Mr. and Mrs. Bowman last year observed their sixty-first wedding anniversary. More than 30 of their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren attended. The couple lived most of their married life in the Port Huron area. Mr. Boman served 18 years as a mechanic in the former George Yokum automobile garage here, retiring to take up farming. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Louise Bowman, and four sons, Floyd C., Vere C. George W. Jr. and Nomar D. Boman, all of Port Huron; a daughter, Mrs. Frank Zimmerman, Pontiac; 25 grandchildren 26 great grandchildren; three bothers, John and Guy Boman, Edenville, and Fred Boman, Gladwin, Mich.; a sister, Mrs. Myrtle Taylor, Gladwin, and several nieces and nephews. Another grandson, Claude Boman, was killed in an automobile accident May 22 on US-25A north of Port Huron. Funeral services will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Thursday in the Arthur Smith funeral home. Rev. Harold J. Salmon, pastor of Gratiot Park Methodist church, will officiate. Burial will be in Kittridge Cemetery, Snyderville. The remains are in the funeral home."

"Marysville - Helen Marie Bond, 88, of Marysville died Friday, May 12, 2000, in her daughter's home after a brief illness. She was born Nov. 8, 1911, in Applegate to the late Jessie and Ella Ennest and had lived in Marysville since 1954. She married Howard M. Bond on March 2, 1929, in Port Huron. He died June 30, 1979. Mrs. Bond was a member of Sturges Memorial Congregational Church and the Ladies Aid. She was Supreme Grand Mistress of the Loyal Orange Lodge of Michigan and the United States and was active with the Senior Citizens of Marysville. She is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Mary Eagen and Betty (William) Campbell; eight grandchildren, Michael (Denise) Eagen, Pam (Dan) Jamison, Vicki (James) Smack, Eric (Julie) Campbell, Barry (Erin) Campbell, Merri (Jeff) Rieg, Charles (Jill) Campbell and Nora (Ted) Cloud; 12 great-grandchildren, Marchelle, Chad, Nathan, Holly, Candice, Ashley, Melissa, Cassandra, Sarah, Katie, Chelsi and Lindsey; a sister, Barbara Lahtinen and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two sons, Thomas in 1939 and William in 1986, and a grandson, Gregory Eagen in 1987. Mrs. Bortrager lived in St. Clair for the last 35 years. She was born July 31, 1865 in Highland, Mich., the daughter of the late James and Julia Blood McCartney. Mr. Bortrager was a retired St. Clair Township farmer. He died many years ago. Mrs. Borntrager was a member of Cornell chapter No. 93, OES. "Mrs. Mary Borowski, 52, wife of Stephen Borowski, died Sunday morning at St. Clair Community hospital where she was removed Saturday from her home at 7602 division road. Mrs. Borowski had been in ill health for some time. Mrs. Borowski was born July 2, 1891, and has lived in this vicinity the past 13 years. She is survived by her husband; two sons, Walter Borowski, Detroit, and Vincent Borowski, at home; and four grandchildren. Another son, Theodore Borowski, was killed in action, August 10, 1943 in the North African campaign. Funeral services were held from the Friederichs funeral Home and in St. Mary's Catholic church on Wednesday morning. Rev. Edward J. Kromenaker, pastor, officiated. Burial was in Hillside cemetery."

"A St. Clair war hero, Private "Ted" S. Borowski, was buried Saturday, July 9, in St. Clair's Hillside cemetery. Private Borowski was killed in action August 10, 1943. Funeral services were held in St. Mary's church at 10 Saturday morning with Rev. Edward J. Kromenaker, pastor, officiating. Members of the Charles J. Fulton post, No. 382, American Legion, acted as pallbearers and conducted the burial services."

"St. Clair - Delos J. Boulier, 64, died June 8 [1982] in River District Hospital, East China township, apparently from a heart attack. He was born June 7, 1918, in St. Clair, where he was a lifelong resident. He married Mary Beach June 7, 1940, in St. Clair. Mr. Boulier was a 40-year employee of Diamond Crystal Salt Company, retiring June 30, 1981. He was a parishioner of St. Mary's Catholic Church. He is survived by his wife; a son, Delos Boulier III, St. Clair; 11 daughters, Connie Fitzhenry, St. Louis, Mo. Susan Ross and Carol Herbert, both of Marysville, Margaret Pickelhaupt, Joanne Sanders, Maria Barnum and Kathy, all of St. Clair Theresa Donaldson, Marine City, Donna DuBuque, Huston, Tx., Lois Scott, Phoenix, Az., and Jeanne, Algonac; two brothers, Donald and Charles, both of St. Clair; a sister, Beatrice, Pickelhaupt, Port Huron; and 17 grandchildren. Funeral services were held June 11 in St. Mary's Catholic Church, The Rev. Karl Hubble, pastor, officiate. Arrangements were made by the L. C. Friederichs and Son Funeral Home. "Port Huron - Alta Jane Bowen, 76, of Port Huron, died Tuesday, Nov. 30,1999, in Mercy Hospital after a long illness. She was born Feb. 8, 1923, in Croswell, the daughter of the late William and Irene Zimmer. She married Roy B. Bowen on June 27, 1953, in Port Huron. She was a 22 year employee of the Chrysler Corp. and was a 10 year employee of the Utica School District. She is survived by her husband, Roy B. Bowen of Port Huron; son and daughter-in-law, Dennis and Sara Bowen of Florida; daughter and son-in-law, Brenda and John Perry of Florida; two grandchildren, Erika and Tyler Perry; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Gordon E. and Margaret Bowen of Port Huron; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Friday in the Jowett Funeral Home, 1634 Lapeer Ave. at 17th Street. Pastor Don Sperling will officiate. Burial will be in Christian Memorial Cultural Center. Visiting hours are 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. today. Memorials may be made to the American Lung Association."

Jacob Bowen
"Jacob Bowen, aged 81 years, died at the residence of his son at Presque Isle on Wednesday. Mr. Bowen was an old resident of East Greenwood township having resided there for 38 years. About one year ago he sold his farm, and together with Mrs. Bowen, took his residence with his son, William Bowen at Wadhams. Mrs. Bowen died last May and since then Mr. Bowen had rapidly failed. He is survived by four daughters and five sons as follows: Mrs. Don Harris, Mrs. Del Loop(?), Mrs. Jeff Mathews, and Mrs. Joseph Cline, all of Port Huron and Joseph and Arthur Bowen of Detroit; Henry and William Bowen, of Wadhams, and Andrew Bowen, of Presque Isle. The remains will be brought to Port Huron from Presque Isle and the interment will be at Lakeside cemetery. The announcement of the funeral will be made later."

Henry Bowers
During the severe thunderstorm of Thursday afternoon, Henry Bowers, a resident of China township, was struck and instantly killed by lightening. He was in the barn yard when the storm came up and had just taken a basket of seed corn into the granary. _____ stepped out to the building a _____ lightning struck a rusty nail in _____ and from then jumped to Mr. Bowers clothes were badly torn and the_______his shoe torn completely off. His ____was badly burned. A peculiar thing was that the bolt did not hurt the building in the least and all of the rust on the nail it struck was taken off. His death causes extreme sadness to his mother, sister and brothers as it was only last fall the his father, Henry Bowers, was killed by falling from a hay mow. Deceased was about 30 years of age and resided home with his mother and sister. He was a hard-working honest young man, whom everybody liked. Much sympathy is expressed for the bereaved family who seem to have had more than their share of sorrow. The last sad rites were held at St. Mary's Catholic church, Saturday morning at nine o'clock and very largely attended. He is survived by a mother, two brothers, Joseph of Port Huron, John of Columbus, and two sisters, Dora, now Mrs. D. Martindale of Columbus, and Mary, unmarried, and living at home."

"Port Huron - Mrs. Bernice L. "Bunnie" Boyd, 100, died Monday, Oct. 11, 1999 in Marwood Manor after a short illness. She was born Sept. 9, 1899 in Covington, Ky., the daughter of the late Walter and Viola Hoffmeier. She married Clifford Boyd, who died in 1985. Mrs. Boyd was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. She retired from Rich's Department Store in Atlanta and was a former employee of Sperry's. Bunnie is survived by her brother, Albert W. Hoffmeier of Sedalia, Mo.; daughter-in-law, Gudrun Canavan of Bochum, Germany; four grandchildren, Ute Canavan and Sabina Canavan, both of Germany, Sean Canavan of San Francisco, and Steven Canavan of Germany; five great grandchildren, Jana, Sidney, Carlin, Linus, and Seana; and several nieces, nephews and great nieces and great nephews. She was preceded in death by a son, John R. Canavan; two brothers, William and George Hoffmeier; and a sister, Margaret Taylor. Private family memorial services will take place. Burial will be in Lakeside Cemetery. Arrangements by Jowett Funeral Home, 1634 Lapeer Ave. at 17th Street."

Mary Boylan
"Died, August 28th, at the residence of M. P. Whipple, Port Huron, Mary Boylan, aged 91 years, mother of Mr. T. J. Millikin. Mrs. Boylan was born on Prince Edwards Island, her father was an officer in the British army, and she spent some years of her childhood in the city of Quebec. When 19 years of age she was married to John Millikin by whom she had 9 children, five boys and four girls. Her husband died in 1853, leaving her the care of the family most of them quite young, and two farms both heavily mortgaged, but with hard work and strict economy the debts were paid off. In 1862 she married William Boylan and 1878 was again left a widow and has since then resided with her children, the last year she made her home with T. J. Millikin of this city and had gone to Port Huron to visit friends and died there. Mrs. Boylan was a strict Methodist of the old school. It can truly be said that in the training of her family she did her duty nobly. Ripened in years and fully prepared for another state of existence she passed away to enjoy the reward of a life well spent on earth."

"Iron River, Wis. - Capt. Robert A. Brabander, age 76, of Iron River, formerly of St. Clair, died Thursday, July 20, 2000. He was born Jan. 6, 1924, in St. Clair to Benjamin and Emma Brabander. He had lived in St. Clair before moving to Superior, Wis., and then Iron River, Wis., in 1985. He was employed as a Great Lakes captain for Bethlehem Steel Shipping Co. for 37 years, retiring in 1985. Bob married Marla Rydberg on May 1, 1985, in Duluth. He loved going four wheeling and working in his vegetable garden. He also had a great love for sailing the Great Lakes. He is survived by his wife of 15 years, Marla; his daughters, Randy DiMarco of Florida and Tracy (Richard) Brenner of St. Clair; his son, Robert Brabander; 12 grandchildren; his stepsons, Scott (Kathy) DeBeir and Mike DeBeir, both of Superior, Wis.; his stepdaughters, Andrea DeBeir of Iron River, Wis., Pamela Gidley and Lisa Bouchard, both of Superior, Wis.; his sisters, Shirley (Sam) Forti of Hamburg, N.Y., and Lois (Hewitt) Clarke of Woodlands, Texas; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents. Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Michael's Catholic Church, Iron River, Wis. Visiting hours are from 5 to 9 p.m. at Lenroot Maetzold Funeral Home, (715) 394-5112, Superior, Wis. She was born Nov. 20, 1876 in Tyre, Mich., and was married June 9, 1897. She was a member of Port Huron chapter No. 170 Order of Eastern Star, and had lived here 31 years. She is survived by her husband; a daughter, Mrs. Gladys I. Bradt, Port Huron; five sisters, Mrs. Ada Rathbon, Ubly; Mrs. James Kneeshaw, Pontiac; Mrs. O.D. Reynolds, Detroit; Mrs. George Brown, Alpena; and Mrs. Robert Rathbon, Vancouver, B.C.; and two brothers, Eli Getty, Detroit and Herbert Getty, Millersburg, Mich. The remains will be in the family residence, 1925 Tenth Avenue, until Tuesday noon, when they will be removed to the Albert A. Falk & Son mortuary for funeral services at 2 p.m. Rev. Dwight S. Oliver Brandt
"Mr. Oliver Brandt died at his home in St. Clair town last Thursday at the age of 76 years. The funeral was held Saturday. For two years he had been a sufferer from catarrh of the stomach and this malady together with an attack of la grippe finally ended a life which had ever been held in the highest respect. Mr. Brandt was a native of Albany county, New York, having been born there December 11, 1820. He grew to manhood in that state, and in December, 1845, came to St. Clair and went to work in a saw mill. for eight years he worked at lumbering here winters, going back to New York in the spring. In 1845 he bought forty acres of land where his house now stands and since then he has lived here and has been engaged in farming and lumbering. He married Miss Thurza Hughes, a native of Essex county, New York, and his wife survives him together with one daughter, Mrs. Chas. Belnap. Mr. Brandt left a fine improved farm of 80 acres free from debt. The farm will be occupied by Mrs. Belnap. Mr. Brandt was a hard working, economical, conscientious man. He was the main support of the Methodist Protestant church and he will be greatly missed by his family and neighbors and church."

Mrs. Brennan was born May 22, 1891, in Almont. She and her husband farmed in the Capac area most of their lives. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star 259, First United Methodist Church and the Farm Bureau. Her husband, Fredrick Brennan, died March 19, 1949. She is survived by a son, Fredrick, Capac; a daughter, ..., Capac; three grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday in the Barnard Funeral Home. The Rev. Margaret Brennan
"Mrs. Margaret Connell McDonald Brennan, daughter of Hugh McDonald and Sarah Woodward, was born at Teesdale, Ontario, Canada, on the 6th of April 1879. At about the age of two she came to the U. S. A. and made her home in Port Huron. Here she attended the local schools and was graduated from the High school of that city in 1899. She taught rural schools near Capac and Emmett for several years. She met her husband in this occupation and was united in marriage with Charles J. Brennan on November 6, 1901, at Port Huron. Two children were born to their union. They made their home on the farm north-west of town, where they lived for over thirty years and their family grew to manhood. This period came to an end with the death of her husband on October 5, 1934. Her home now became the village of Capac. She had been a member of the Presbyterian Church, and in the year 1935 she united with St. John's Lutheran Church. In this Church she found great happiness and was very active. Especially in the work of the Dorcas society of the church, in which she served as officer for many years, did she find an outlet for her desire to remain active. Her life was happy in the midst of her grandchildren who came daily to see her. Her neighborhood friends found an eager companion in her. Her aunt, Mrs. Jane McGregor, came to make her home with her about a year ago and was with her at her death. On June 1 of this year she suffered a stroke while busy in her garden and her life was despaired of at that time. However by careful nursing she was restored to a point where she was able to be about her home. But this seeming recover only covered her true condition for a short while. On Thursday morning June 28 at 11 a.m. she very suddenly passed away when another stroke seized her. She was then 66 years, 2 months and 22 days old. She leaves her two sons, Norman and Kenneth Brennan, of Capac; her sister Mrs. Elizabeth Smith of Detroit; her two brothers, J. A. McDonald of Jeddo and Duncan R. McDonald of Pontiac; her aunt, Jane McGregor, of Capac; and six grandchildren. Not only her family but her many friends will grieve of her. The church has lost an ardent supporter. Her activity will be remembered long. May the Lord whom she served faithfully grant her rest and peace."

"St. Clair - William C. Brigeman, 70, of 6625 Big hand road, St. Clair Township, died Thursday in his home. Mr. Brigeman was born Dec. 9, 1885 in St. Clair Township, farming in this area all his life. He was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran church, St. Clair, and was a charter member of the Lutheran Layman's League. He served as a school and township officer for many years. Mr. Brigeman and Jennie Gliem were married Jan. 22, 1914. He is survived by his widow, Jennie; two sons, Simon Brigeman, at home, and John Brigeman, St. Clair Township; a daughter, Margaret Goethals, St. Clair Township; six grandchildren, and four sisters, Maria Brigeman, at home; Mrs. Oscar Emig, St. Clair; Mrs. George Gibbs, Marine City, and Mrs. Theodore Schneider, Richmond. A sister, Mrs. William Frahs, Marine City, died four years ago. Remains will be in the T. R. "January 16, 1981 - St. Clair Township - Jennie Elizabeth Briggeman, 90, died Jan. 16 in Faith Medical Care Center, East China Township, after a long illness. She was born Sept. 14, 1890 in St. Clair, and was a longtime area resident. She married William Briggeman Jan. 22, 1914 in St. Clair. He died Aug. 9, 1956. Mrs. Briggeman was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, St. Clair and its ladies aid society. She is survived by two sons, Simon and John, and a daughter, Mrs. Margaret Goethals, all of St. Clair; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Jan. 19 in the L. C. Friederichs and Son Funeral Home, St. Clair. The Ref. Dennis A. Hinze, associate pastor of the Faith Lutheran Church, Port Huron, officiated. Burial was in Hillside Cemetery, St. Clair. They left here in 1926 to live in Detroit. Captain Brines, a veteran sailor on the lakes, died about 1946. She was a past president of the auxiliary to the Detroit lodge of the International Ship Masters association and was a member of the Woodward Avenue Presbyterian church in Detroit. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. A. J. Huggett, East Lansing; a brother, John Christian Mackley, San Clemente, Calif., and a sister, Mrs. August Schneider, Richmond. He was a sailor on the Great Lakes for many years, retiring from the Bethelehem Steel vessel Sparrow's Point in 1969. Mrs. Brinker formerly lived on south Teneth street in the city until the death of her husband. She then moved to Drayton Plains. She is survived by a son, George H. Brinker; a daughter, Grace; 10 grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Monday in Our Lady of the Lake Catholic church, Waterford, Mich. She was a life member of the rosary society of St. Mary’s Catholic church, St. Clair. She is survived by four sons, Henry Britz, Detroit; John and Matt Britz, St. Clair; three daughters, Mrs. Amelda Zimmer, St. Clair; Sister Mary Devota, of St. Joseph’s Order, Plymouth, Mich, and Mrs. Ann Stockberger, Berkley; 15 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. Her remains are in the L.C. Friederichs and Son funeral home, St. Clair, where Rosary devotions will be conducted at 8 p.m. today by the Rosary society and at 8:20 p.m. Tuesday by the Knights of Columbus and Holy Name society. Funeral services will be at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday in the funeral home and at 10 a.m. in St. Mary’s church with t. Rev. Msgr. Edward J. Kromenaker, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery. Mrs. Britz’ grandsons will act as pallbearers."

"Marysville - Delbert L. Brockdorff, 76, of Marysville, died Wednesday, Nov. 10, 1999 in Marwood Manor Nursing Home, following a long illness. He was born Jan. 2, 1923 in Marysville and was a resident on Marysville his entire life. He married Jean Frazer on Jan. 22, 1944 in Smiths Creek. Delbert was a Shift Supervisor for Detroit Edison, years ago he was a Volunteer Fireman and Special Policeman in Marysville. He was also a member of the Marysville Masonic Lodge, the Fraternal Order of Police, and American Legion Post 449. He served for three years in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a Golden Glove Boxer in the service. He pitched baseball locally in the Michigan/Ontario Baseball League. Delbert was an avid golfer. He is survived by his wife, Jean L. Brockdorff of Marysville; three daughters, Judy Lee (David) Sutton of Delaware, Penny J. Harris of Marysville and Linda Marie (Robert) Frendt of Pinckney; two sons, Barry Lawrence (Sandy) Brockdorff and Max David (Lori) Brockdorff, both of Marysville; ten grandchildren, Lea VonBrockdorff, Christopher Frendt, Stacie (Charlie) Woods, Jeannie (Jon) Denny, Kristen Burmeister, Jackson Harris, Jason Brockdorff, Gwen Brockdorff, Lee Brockdorff and Karl Brockdorff; and one great grandson, Zackery Denny. "Marysville - Glen Allen Brougham, 80 of Marysville, went home to be with the Lord, January 23, 1998. He was born August 11, 1917 in Pennant Saskatchewan, to the late Edward and Mary Brougham. He married Evelyn Heythaler on October 4, 1963 in Marysville. Mr. Brougham was a ship engineer, sailing both the oceans and the great lakes prior to his retirement in 1979. He served with the Merchant Marines during World War II and received several decorations in later years for serving on commercial vessels in war zones. He was a member of the International Ship Masters' Association, Pilgrim Lutheran Church and the Loyal Order of the Moose, Lodge 158. He is survived by his wife, Evelyn; his children, Brenda and Leonard Jarmusch of San Diego, Calif., Roger and Heidi Kaufman of Union Caseville, Connecticut, Rose and Douglas Norton of Port Huron, Connie and Clifford Hanel of Port Huron, Joanne Lee of Warren, Sidney and Marilyn Noble of Richmond, and Clyde and Verna Noble of Bixby, Arizona; many grandchildren; great grandchildren; nieces, and nephews. He was preceded in death by three children, Gloria Hyde, Lavern Noble, and Larry Noble; a sister, Donalda Sherman; and a brother, Edward Brougham, Jr. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, January 26, 1998 in Pilgrim Lutheran Church, Marysville. "The two years old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. G. T. Brown died last Saturday. Little Anna Wave, as they called her, was a bright, loving child and had made many friends for one of so few summers who will miss her much. "St. Clair - Diane M. Brown, 52, of St. Clair, died Tuesday, June 22, 1999 after a long illness in her home surrounded by her family. She was born April 5, 1947 in Irene to the late Vincent Miles Achatz. She married Harvey L. Brown on April 24, 1968 in Richmond. She earned her Bachelor of Science Degree from the University of Detroit. Diane was a dedicated, compassionate registered nurse. She worked at St. Joseph's Mercy Hospital, Clinton two. for 31 years, most recently as a diabetes educator. She was loved and respected by staff and patients alike. Diane is survived by her loving husband, Harvey; and her three wonderful children, Scott, Renee and Andrew. She cherished her family. She is also survived by her mother Irene Achatz; brothers, David (Wendy) Achatz; and Steven Achatz; sisters, Barbara Achatz, Patricia (Timothy) Keck and Susan Achatz. She was a most special "Aunt Di" to many nieces and nephews. She will also be missed by her grandmother-in-law, Mae Ottenbacher and many aunts, uncles and cousins. Diane will be remembered for her great willingness to help others, her loving heart and the beautiful smile she shared with us all. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday, June 25, 1999 at 10:30 a.m. in St. Augustine Catholic Church, Richmond, with the Rev. James Commyn, pastor officiating. Harvey Brown
"The Late Harvey Brown. Mr. Harvey Brown, of Fort Gratiot, who died on Wednesday, the 14th inst., was born July 26th, 1801, on the Canada shore of Lake Ontario, where his parents had emigrated from the State of New York, residing there for a short time. Upon returning to New York, his father, who was a physician, kept a hotel and store, besides carrying on a large farm in the vicinity of Cape Vincent, where he accumulated considerable property. His son Harvey followed rafting upon the St. Lawrence River for some time. He married the wife who now survives him and when he removed to this State, 22 years ago, had a family of six children, one of whom has since died, while the rest are married and living in this State - all but one in this vicinity. Mr. Brown settled at Fort Gratiot, clearing up quite a farm on the lake shore. He also rafted to some extent on Black River. He led an industrious life, and sustained an unsullied character. Earnest and practical in religion, an enthusiastic Republican in politics, warm-hearted and benevolent in social life, he was respected and loved by a large circle of acquaintances and friends. His funeral was largely atteneded last Friday forenoon, at the M. E. Church, the Rev. E. Barry preaching. The discourse upon the occasion was listened to with marked attention. The text was from Phillippians, I. chap., 23rd verse: 'Having a desire to depart and be with Christ, which is for better,' selected because it embodied the sentiments often expressed by the deceased during his last illness. Though not a member of the church, Mr. Brown had been strictly identified with the M. E. Society as one of its most earnest supporters."

"Fort Gratiot - Paul Siggins Brown, 78, of Fort Gratiot died Saturday, July 1, 2000, unexpectedly. He was born Sept. 14, 1921, in Port Huron, the son of the late James and Bertha McBride Brown. He married Bernice M. Nageleisen on Dec. 29, 1944, in Kentucky. He was a graduate of Port Huron High School in 1939, where he was a member of the state championship football team. He was inducted into the Port Huron Sports Hall of Fame. He served in the U.S. Air Corps in World War II as a first lieutenant and pilot. He was a member of the American Legion and a lifetime member of the Port Huron Elks Lodge 343 B.P.O.E. He also was a member of the Moose Lodge 58. He was employed by Ingell Refrigeration as a sales engineer. He loved to golf and spend time with his grandchildren. He is survived by his wife, Bernice M. Brown of Fort Gratiot; his sons, Paul Charles (Rita) Brown of Lansing, Philip Scott Brown of Georgia and Gery Linn Brown of Sand Point; his grandchildren, Sarah J. (Brown) Root, Lori A. Brown, Peter J. Brown, Traci L. Brown, Michael P. Brown and Ryan M. Brown; his great-grandson, Nicholas Jay Root; close family friend, Elizabeth Ann Brown; and several nieces and nephews. "Fred S. Burso, 80, died suddenly at his home, 702 Robinsonstreet, Sunday May 29. He had been in failing health for some time. Mr. Bruso was a lifelong resident of St. Clair and was born January 25, 1869, the son of Hillard and Catherine Parrow Bruso. He was a painter and decorator in St. Clair for fifty years and was well-known in his profession. Mr. Bruso is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Jarvis McDonald, St. Clair township; three sons, Harry, Merle and William Bruso, all of St. Clair; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; also a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held from the Friederichs funeral home on Tuesday afternoon. Rev. Hiram Pegg officiating. Burial was in St. Mary’s cemetery. Acting as pallbearers were: Joseph Stommer, Matt Dares, John McCormick, Ottis Bassett, Nick Zimmer and Victor Lulofs."

"Kimball Township - Bernice M. Bucholz, 72, died Sunday, Feb. 3, 1985, in her home. She was born Nov. 23, 1912, in Detroit, and was a lifelong Kimball Township resident. She married Leo E. Bucholtz Bev. 6, 1932. Mrs. Bucholtz was a parishioner of Holy rosary Catholic Church, Smiths Creek, and a member of its choir. She was an honorary member of the altar society of Holy Rosary church. She was well-known throughout the community for interior decorating. Mrs. Bucholtz is survived by her husband; two sons, John G. and Thomas M. Bucholtz, both of Port Huron; one daughter, Mrs. Ronald A. (Dorothy A.) Christensen, Smiths Creeks; three brothers, Edward, Leonard and Sigmond Bielecki, all of Detroit; five granddaughters, Mrs. James (Deborah) Biskner and Pamela Bucholt, both of Port Huron, and Kathy Ann, Tammy Lynn and Tina Marie Christensen, all of Smiths Creek; two grandsons, Fredrick and Dennis Bucholtz, both of Port Huron; and one great-grandson, Brandon H. Biskner, Port Huron. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in Holy Rosary church. The Rev. Thomas Fraser, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in St. Phillips Cemetery, Columbus Township. "Mrs. Mabel M. Buckindail, 85, of 49 Fourteenth Street, died Wednesday in a local nursing home after a long illness. She was born Oct. 16, 1880, in Casco Township and live in Port Huron 44 years. Her husband, Michael Buckindail, died Nov. 24, 1943. She is survived by a son, Gerald Buckindail, St. Clair; a daughter, Mrs. Ralph Liscom, Port Huron; five grandchildren; and 12 great grandchildren. The remains are in Arthur Smith Funeral Home where funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday. Rev. Charles R. Batterbee, pastor of Mt. Pleasant Gospel Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery."

"Emmett - Tyne M. Buckland, 81, of Emmett went home to be with the Lord Friday, on Jan. 14, 2000. She was born July 27, 1918, in Marquette to the late Thomas and Hilja Linjala. Tyne married Harold Buckland June 16, 1946, in Goodells. He died Nov. 18, 1978. Mrs. Buckland worked at Kubisch's Eggs for 19 years. She was a member of Goodells Bible Church, Missionary Board and was a Sunday school and primary church teacher. Tyne is survived by her three sons, Mr. Harold Buckland of Detroit, Mr. and Mrs. Robert (Carrie) Buckland of Richmond, and Mr. and Mrs. Ernest (Bonnie) Buckland of St. Clair; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a brother, Mr. and Mrs. Elmer (Ellen) Linjala; one sister, Mrs. Toini Niemela; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a brother, Walter, and a sister, Miriam Lehigh. Visitation will be 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Jan. 16, 2000, at the Pollock-Randall Funeral Home. She is survived by five sons, Joseph, Leonard, Arthur, Stanley and Walter Buczkowski; five daughters, Mrs. Mary Arietta, East Detroit; Mrs. Martha Koleta, Ludington, Mich.; Mrs. Eleanor Haydanack, Marine City, and Theresa and Rosali Buczkowski, both at home; 12 grand children; four sisters, Mrs. Helen Oszlewski, Mrs. Rossse Platski, Mrs. Martha Reski and Mrs. Frances Chmiekewski, all of Detroit, and two brothers, Frank Chmielewski, Fairhaven, and Anthony Chmielewski, Detroit. "January 28, 1981 - St. Clair - Mary Jane Buczkowski, 55, died Jan. 28 in St. Joseph's Hospital-West, Mount Clemens, from injuries suffered in a Jan. 6 automobile accident. She was born March 23, 1925, in Marine City. She married Leonard C. Buczkowski March 29, 1944, in St. Clair. Mrs. Buczkowski worked at Blue Water Plastics Co. She was a parishioner of St. Mary's Catholic Church. She is survived by her husband; three daughters, Mrs. Gerald (Linda J.) Schweihofer, and Mrs. Harvey (Nancy) Westrick, both of St. Clair, and Lillian, Port Huron; a brother, Jacob Spreitz, Marine City; three sisters, Mrs. Blanche Dionne, Algonac, Mrs. Laura Geib, Marine City, and Mrs. Viola Gould, St. Petersburg, Fl.; and four grandchildren. Funeral services were held Jan. 31 in the Colonial Funeral Home-Jay Street Chapel and in St. Mary's Catholic Church. The Rev. Karl Hubble, pastor, officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery. "Woman dies from injuries - St. Clair - Mary J. Buczkowski died Wednesday in St. Joseph's Hospital-West, Mount Clements, from injuries she suffered Jan. 6 in a two-car accident at Fred Moore Highway and King Road in China Township. Mrs. Buczkowski is the first 1981 traffic fatality for St. Clair county. During 1980, 31 persons were killed in county traffic accidents. Mrs. Buczkowski, 55, of 7127 Trumble St., St. Clair, was a passenger in a car driven by her brother-in-law, Walter L. Buczkowski, 52, of 7171 Trumble St., St. Clair. The accident occurred when the Buczkowski car and one driven by Edward M. Devooght, 19, of 3093 Main St., Emmett, collided, Trooper James Hable, Michigan State Police, said."

He was born March 18, 1919, in Port Huron, and was a lifelong area resident. He married Jeanette E. Haddas in June 1942 in Maumee, Ohio. Mr. Budzik served in the U. S. Army during World War II. He was the former owner and operator of the Lynwood Bar. He was a parishioner of St. Christopher's Catholic Church. He was a member of Post 49, American Legion 0 and 8 Voiture Local 120 of St. Clair County, and Lodge 158, L.O.O.M., Port Huron, and Lodge 343, B.P.O.E., both of Port Huron. Mr. Budzik is survived by his wife; one daughter, Mrs. Roy (Karen) Roatenberry, Smiths Creek; three sisters, Mrs. Alfred (Ann) Vaughn, St. Louis, Mo., Mrs. Victoria Hand, Port Huron, and Mrs. George (Mary) West, Marysville; one granddaughter, Any Roatenberry, Smiths Creek; and several nieces and nephews. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday in St. Christopher's Catholic Church. The Rev. Joseph A. Gagnon will officiate. Burial will be in Riverlawn Cemetery with military committal rites under the auspices of Post 449. 'Jut' was a graduate of Capac High School in 1998 and was currently a second-year student at St. Clair County Community College. He was employed at Best Buy, Port Huron, and was also an assistant wrestling coach for Capac High Schools. He also loved to golf. Surviving in addition to his parents, Barry and Lori, is a brother, Ryan of Capac; his grandparents, Charlene Bullock of Florida and Percy and Margaret Sabada of Yale; several aunts and uncles, Scott and Joanne Sabada of Yale, Mike Sabada of Lake Orion, Jerry and Rose Bullock of Ohio, Kenneth and Choo Bullock of Texas, Patsy Jones of Kentucky and Jerry Debrycker of Pontiac; godparents, Verna and Dennis Roy of Yale and best friend, Darci Robinson of Capac; several cousins and many friends. "Richmond - Joseph Arthur Burg, 65, of Richmond died Friday, June 2, 2000, in his home after a brief illness. Mr. Burg was born June 24, 1934, in Centerline, to John and Florentine Martin Burg. He married Mary Lou Rivard in New Baltimore on Sept. 26, 1964. He worked as a laborer at the Ford Axle Plant in Sterling Heights and was a member of St. Augustine Catholic Church. He was a former member of the Richmond Knights of Columbus and served many terms on the Parish Council of St. Augustine Church. He is survived by his wife, Mary Lou; children, Janet (Neal) Robertson of Macomb, Joseph (Kim) Burg of Columbus, Jeanne (Jeff) Altermatt of Richmond and Jonathan Burg of Richmond; brother, Francis Burg of Richmond; sisters, Marian Walker of Royal Oak and Geraldine Eschenburg of Sterling Heights; and grandchildren, Jacob and Annabelle Altermatt and Emily Robertson. He married Donna Joy Fritch on Oct. 30, 1942, in Imlay City. He had been employed by Darrin Armstrong Construction. He was a high rise ironworker. He was a member of Imlay City First Baptist Church. His hobby was playing music. He played the mandolin and the fiddle. He used to sit-in with many local country-western groups. Surviving are his wife, Donna Burgess of Lapeer; daughter, Pamela Morenzetti of Grand Blanc and Carol Burgess of Swartz Creek; sons, Michael (Sandra) Burgess of Columbiaville, John (Karen) Burgess of Lapeer and William Burgess of Linden; one sister, Mary (John) Kinkade of Sac City, Iowa; and sisters-in-law, Janice Fritch of Imlay City and Ardith Frentheway of Portage. He is also survived by six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Funeral services will take place at 1 p.m. Monday at First Baptist Church, Imlay City. Mary B. Burgess
"The late Mrs. Mary B.Burgess was born in Rochester, N.Y., in 1822, her maiden name being Mary B. Burlingame. She was of a family of five sisters and one brother, of whom only three sisters survive her. Her early days were spent in school and she was a graduate of Oberlin College in her 18th year. She had a great interest in church work and had a good musical education in her younger days. She came to Michigan in 1844, and was married to George Burgess, in the city of Port Huron in 1849, and had lived in St. Clair county ever since that date. Her husband died in 1881. Mrs. Burgess was crippled for life by a fall on an icy sidewalk on Sixth street 12 years ago. She raised a family of three sons and one daughter, George P. Burgess, Courtland B. Burgess, Avery B. Burgess and Mary Burgess, the latter being dead."

"Port Huron - Addie B. Short Burgin, 86, of Port Huron, died Thursday, Oct. 7, 1999 in Marwood Manor. She was born March 27, 1913 in Alabama to the late John and Beatrice (Davis) Finch. She retired from Vlassic Pickle Co. She was a longtime member of All Nation Church Of God in Christ, where she has served in many capacities including, Sunday school teacher and Superintendent, deaconess, trustee board, usher hoard, sewing circle member and past president of' the Mother's Board. She leaves to mourn her passing, a son, Roy Burgin of Port Huron; eight grandchildren; stepdaughter, Helen Long of Chicago; two sisters, Lena Hatchett of Grand Rapids and Carrie Reed of Jasper, Ala.; a brother, the Rev. Jeff Davis of Steens, Miss.; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. The family hour will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, Oct. 11, 1999 in Pollock-Randall Funeral Horne. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 12, 1999 in All Nation Church of God in Christ, Port Huron. The Rev. Vincent Mathews Sr. will officiate. Burial will be in Lakeside Cemetery, Port Huron."

Conrad Burke
"Conrad Burke, a well known resident of this city, and a carpet weaver by trade, died last Saturday at his home, aged 59 years. Mr. Burke was out on election day and voted but was taken sick a few hours after with some sort of paralysis, that caried him away as above noted. He leaves a widow and several children. His funeral was held on Monday, at the house, Rev. W. B. Millard officiating and the remains buried in the city cemetery."

Janet Burnett
"Eaton Rapids - Janet Burnett, 41, passed away on Thursday, Jan. 27, 2000. She was born on May 19, 1958, in Detroit, a daughter to Roy and Ann Cencich. Mrs. Bennett enjoyed working as a certified pharmacy technician at the Apothecary Shop in Lansing, where she had worked about eight years. she was very devoted to her family, friends and her pets, all of who will greatly miss her. Surviving are her husband, Robert J Burnett: children, Jason Roy Jackson of Lansing and Michael Paul (Jean Elizabeth) Jackson of DeWitt: grand daughter, Karen Ann: her parents: brother, Dennis E (Carmen) Cencich of El Paso, Texas: stepsisters, Linda (Gary) Stiffler and Margaret Ann Flintz: stepbrothers, John (Karan) Gray: several nieces and nephews: godchildren, Ryan, Tony and Jessica Lonik: special friends, Sally Bruen, Anna Spagnuolo and Tammy Reynolds: and many other loving and caring friends. She was preceded in death by her birth mother, June Cenich, on Jan. 29, 1972. The funeral liturgy will be conducted by Deacon Bob McPhilamy of St. Gerald Catholic Church at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2000 at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 2 to 4 today
and from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday. A rosary will be said at 7:30 p.m. Monday. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, in memory of Janet Burnett."

"St. Clair, Sept. 18 - Walter Burnor, 73, of 506 Adams street, resident here 37 years, local barber, died Saturday in Mercy Hospital, Port Huron, after a long illness. He was born Dec. 10, 1881, in Toledo, O., and moved to St. Clair in 1917. His wife, Mrs. Mary Burnor, died in 1948. He is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Lorne Dodea, St. Clair; a brother, Louis Bornor, Bay City, and two grandchildren. The remains are in the L. C. Friederichs funeral home where funeral services will be hled at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday. Services also will be held at 10 a.m. in St. Mary’s Catholic church. Rev. Harold Krucher, assistant pastor of St. Mary’s , will officiate at both services. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery. Rosary will be recited at 8 p.m. today by the Stella Morris Circle, Daughters of Isabella, and Rosary Altar society, in the funeral home. Men of the Parishwill recite Rosary at 8 p.m. Monday in the funeral home."

Catherine M. (Lisee) Burns
"Marine City - Our dear mother, grandmother and great grandmother, Catherine M. (Lisee) Burns, 89, of Marine City, went to her eternal rest on Saturday, Dec. 4, 1999, at the home of her son, Joseph L. Burns, of East China Township. She was born on July 28, 1910, in Marine City, a daughter to the late Joseph "Nap" Lisee and Margaret Cremean Lisee. She married Stewart A. Burns on May 25, 1929. He preceded her in death on July 16, 1984. With her passing she joins her husband, parents, four brothers (Jack, Alton, William and Carl), a sister, (Margaret Grandy) and a special nephew, (the Rev. Fr. Joseph J. Lisee). Catherine was a lifelong member of Holy Cross Parish, the Holy Cross Altar Society and was a charter member of St. Agatha Circle Daughters of Isabella. She was also an avid volunteer at the senior center. Her interests dated back to the era when Marine City's heritage were the days when men sailed or the Great Lakes freighters, as her husband did for 42 years. Catherine and her late brother, Carl Lisee, kept the legacy alive of their father's role in the designing of the Miss America boats for Gar Wood. She also enjoyed playing cards and bingo in the company of her friends. Our mom inspired us with her sense of humor, her love of life, and her devotion to the needs of her family. She will remain in our hearts and memories. She will live on in her children ... daughter, Mary Jo (Roger) Malcolm of Cottrellville Township; son, Joseph and special daughter-in-law, Gwen Burns of East China Township; grandchildren, Cheryl (Dana) O'Rourke, Roger (Dawn) Malcolm, Charmian Malcolm and Jenee' Burns; great grandchildren, Malcolm Donald and Dana Stewart O'Rourke and Mariah Lee and Roger Lee Malcolm III; several nieces and nephews; and a special little friend, Houston, who brightened her days. Funeral services will be 9:30 a.m.Wednesday in the Bower-Rose Funeral Home, Marine City, followed by a 10 a.m. Mass in Holy Cross Catholic Church. The Rev. Fr. Donald E. Bartone will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visiting in the funeral home will be 2 to 9 p.m. Tuesday with a rosary to be prayed at 8 p.m. A Daughters of Isabella rosary will be prayed at 3 p.m. Tuesday. Edith L. Sult Burrows
"Port Huron - Edith L. Sult Burrows, 79, of Port Huron, died Saturday, Jan. 1, 2000, in Evangelical Home after a long illness. She was born Jan. 11, 1920, in Sanilac County, to the late Herbert and Anna Perry. She was a lifelong area resident. She married Alvin L. Sult in 1937. He died in 1960. She married James L. Burrows on June 1, 1971, in Port Huron. Mrs. Burrows attended the First United Methodist Church. She had worked for J.C. Penney and Kmart. She enjoyed music and was very much a family person. She is survived by her husband, James L. Burrows of Port Huron; son, Mr. and Mrs. Robert A. (Grace) Sult of Port Huron; daughter, Dr. and Mrs. Michael (Joyce) Emerick of St. Clair; grandson, Ryan R. Suit of Port Huron; two stepdaughters, the Rev. and Mrs. Don (Linda) Taylor of Vancouver, Wash., and Mr. and Mrs. John (Phyllis) Hermann of Fort Wayne, Ind.; stepson, the Rev. and Mrs. David (Sharon) Burrows of Virginia; seven step grandchildren; three step great granddaughters; sister, Althea Harneck of Florida; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Mildred Wood and Blanche Smith, and three brothers, Earl, Vernon and Elmer Perry. Visitation will be Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2000, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. in the Pollock-Randall Funeral Home. Private family services will be held. The Rev. Ralph H. Pieper II of First United Methodist Church will officiate. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Fort Gratiot. Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church or the Evangelical Home."

"St. Clair - Mrs. Caroline Busha, 78, of 518 North Sixth street, wife of Albert Busha, died Tuesday in St. Clair Community Hospital after a long illness. Mrs. Busha was born Jan. 15, 1878 in St. Clair Township, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Peter Yeip, pioneer residents of the Township. She and Mr. Busha were married Nov. 5, 1900. Mrs. Busha was a member of St. Mary's Catholic church, having been a charter member of Stella Marais circle, Daughters of Isabella, a member of the church Rosary Society, the Legion of Mary and the First Friday club. Mrs. Busha is survived by her husband, two daughters, Mrs. Lucille Visger and Mrs. Estella Joachim, St. Clair; four grandchildren, John Visger, Stockton, Calif., and Robert Visger, Harry Joachim and Caroline Bryson, all of St. Clair; a sister, Mrs. Agnes Powers, St. Clair; six great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Remains are in the L. C. Friederichs & Son funeral home where services will be held at 9:30 a.m. Friday and at 10 a.m. Friday in St. Mary's Catholic; church with Rev. Harold J. Kreucher, assistant pastor, officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery. Rosary devotions will be at 8 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home for women of the parish and 8 p.m. Thursday for men of the parish."

Charles Busha
"Charles Busha was born in Quebec June 8th, 1801, and died in St. Clair Monday evening, February 1st, 1892, at the residence of his son, Desiah on North Fourth street, aged nearly 91 years. He was the father of fourteen children, eight girls and six boys, seven girls and four boys surviving him. For many years he had been comparatively helpless and the devotion and care of his children is something remarkable. He was a Catholic the funeral services being held at St. Mary's Church Wednesday morning at nine o'clock, a.m. Father Schenkelburg officiating. The remains were buried in the city cemetery."

Fred. C. Busha
"Fred. C. Busha, 67, died Thursday night, February 14, in the home of his sister-in-law, Miss Greturde German, following an illness of some five years. Mr. Busha was born in Sombra, Ont., April 1, 1867. He came with his parents to this city when a boy. His marriage to Miss Jessie German occurred here Oct. 15, 1890. Several years later Mr. and Mrs. Busha moved to Pontiac where they resided some 30 years. He is survived by his widow; one son, Russell Busha, Detroit; three brothers, Henry of Detroit; Albert and Joseph, this city, and three grandchildren. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon in Friederichs and Smith's funeral chapel. Rev. William M. Ward, of the Adair M. E. church officiated, assisted by Rev. Cm M. Burkholder, pastor of first congregational church. Burial was in Hillside cemetery.

"Croswell - Carla Mae Butler, age 64, of Croswell died Friday, June 2, 2000, in Evangelical Home, Fort Gratiot. She was born June 10, 1935, in Ypsilanti, daughter of the late Gordon and Grace (Ankeny) Priebe. She married Leo W. "Bill"Butler on Oct. 26, 1952, in Port Sanilac. She is survived by her husband, Bill; a son, Leonard (Sherrie) of Applegate; a daughter, Jodie (Joe) Hendra, also of Applegate; and a sister, Loretta (Harvey) Cornwell of Port Huron. She is also survived by eight grandchildren, Leslie and Aaron Butler, Kelli Bishop, Nathan and Robbie Butler, Danyel and Talysha Schroeder and Karysa Hendra; and four great-grandchildren, Dalton, Dustin and Madyson Bishop and Daniel Butler. She is preceded in death by a son, Daniel, in September 1981. Services for Mrs. Butler will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the Pomeroy Funeral Home in Croswell. The Rev. Barry Sheldon, pastor of St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Lexington, will officiate. Burial will be in Croswell Cemetery. Friends may call from 1 to 8 p.m. today at Pomeroy Funeral Home in Croswell. Funeral services for Mrs. Alice M. Butlin, 67, were held in the Friederichs funeral home and St. Mary’s Catholic church Tuesday morning. Rev. Carlton J. Kraus, assistant pastor officiated. Burial was in St. Mary’s cemetery. Pallbearers were Frank Alleman, Calvin Alleman, Louis Burn, Chester Droulard, Leo Zimmer and George Thompson. Mrs. Butlin died in the St. Clair Community hospital Sunday. She was born in China Township, Sept. 4, 1882, the daughter of James and Hanna Reynolds and spent all her life in St. Clair. She is survived by four daughters, Dorothy Butlin, Detroit; Mrs. Lucille Webster, and Mrs. Marilyn France, St. Clair; and Mrs. Shirley Peckers, Pontiac; one son, Walter Butlin, Detroit; three sisters, Mrs. Asa Droullard and Mrs. Laura Rodgrigues, St. Clair; and Mrs. Leon Shedd, Detroit; four brothers, John Reynolds, St. Clair, James Reynolds, Mt. Clemens; William Reynolds, Detroit; and Eugene Reynolds, LaGrange, Ill., and six grandchildren."
