Thomas Alva Edison

"It is given to few men of any age, nation, or calling to become the benefactor of all humanity.
That distinction came abundantly to Thomas Alva Edison."
 - Herbert Hoover

Before Thomas Alva Edison belonged to the world, he belonged to Port Huron...

Thomas Edison was born in Milan, Ohio, on February 11, 1847. At the age of seven, the Edison family moved to Port Huron. The rest, as they say, is history...a proud part of Port Huron's history.

In 1929, the City of Port Huron took part in celebrating Thomas Edison's success in perfecting the incandescent lightbulb. The Light's Golden Jubilee parade marked the 50th year since Edison's accomplishment in 1879. This same year also saw the dedication of the Edison Rock in Pine Grove Park. The Port Huron Rotary Club was responsible for bringing the 123,000-pound boulder from Kinde, Michigan, a feat undertaken by the Pere Marquette Railway Company. The Rotary Club also affixed the brass tablet that describes the proximity of the Edison homestead to Pine Grove Park.

On February 10, 1940, Port Huron again helped celebrate the great inventor when it was selected as THE place for the World Premiere of Mickey Rooney's movie, "Young Tom Edison," a movie that shot some of its scenes in Port Huron. Many of Port Huron's residents embraced this milestone event, especially workers in the downtown stores, with the men growing whiskers of yesteryear and the women donning petticoats and bonnets. Thanks to the cooperation of Henry Ford, the Sam Hill engine, an engine from the time of Edison's youthful career as a "candy butcher" on the Grand Trunk Railroad, brought Mickey Rooney and other distinguished guests along the same route Thomas Edison rode in his time. Names of some of the distinguished guests who helped celebrate this event were: Mrs. Edison Hughes (Edison's widow), Louis B. Mayer (of MGM Studios), Edsel Ford, Harvey Firestone Jr., Father Flanagan (of Boys' Town), Governor Luren Dickinson (Michigan), and Premier Mitchell Hepburn (Ontario, Canada). The world premiere was held at the Desmond Theater, later known as the Huron Theater in downtown Port Huron. The movie was also seen at two other local theaters. After the movie, the celebration was continued with a grand ball in the high school gymnasium. The following day, February 11, was the 93rd anniversary of the inventor's birth.

In 1947, the United States Postal Service issued a commemorative stamp to mark the 100th anniversary.

In 2004, Mickey Rooney returned to Port Huron for the 125th anniversary of Edison's lightbulb.
