LEON L. PUNG

Mr. Leon L. Pung, age 66 of Gaylord died Tuesday, March 19, 2002 at Western Arizona Regional Medical Center in Bullhead City, Arizona. Mr. Pung was born in Clinton County, Michigan on May 11, 1935 and moved to Gaylord in 1970 from Dewitt/Lansing.

He served in the United States Army with the 271st Engineers, stationed at Ladd Air Force Base in Fairbanks, Alaska. After the service he began a longtime career in plastering. He later worked for the Diocese of Gaylord and soon after began working for the Gaylord Community Schools as a bus driver. During the summer months he was employed in the maintenance department of the Otsego Lake State Park.

He retired from the school system in 1997. Since retirement he had wintered in Bullhead City, Arizona.

He was a member of St. Mary Cathedral Parish and a member of the church choir that performed in Rome, Italy, Austria, Germany, Switzerland, England, Ireland and France. In 1987, at the same time his youngest child graduated from St. Mary High School, Mr. Pung very proudly graduated from the Gaylord High School Adult Education Program.

On April 14, 1956, in Fowler, Michigan, he married the former Marilyn "Peggy" Shaw, who survives. He is also survived by seven children, Susan (Timothy) Stump of Clinton, Michael (Pamela) Pung of Midwest City, Oklahoma, Douglas (Mary) Pung of Gaylord, Gregory (Patricia) Pung of Gaylord, LuAnn Deane of Gaylord, Kathy (Dennis) Lange of Gaylord, Larry (Teri) Pung of Lewisburg, Tennessee; 13 grandchildren, seven step grandchildren; four great grandchildren; 4 step great grandchildren; four brothers, Virgil (Marguerite) Pung of Ionia, Jerome (Elba) Pung of East Lansing, Ronald (Elaine) Pung of Grand Ledge, Donald (Beatrice) Pung of Lansing; one sister, Virginia (Louis) Eisler of St. Johns; two sisters-in-law, Romilda Pung and Reta Pung of Lansing.

He was preceded in death by his parents Albert and Dorothy (Schomisch) Pung; two brothers, Leonard and Gerald; and two sisters, Rita Harr and Bernadette Klatt.

Funeral services were held on Monday, March 25, 2002 from St. Mary Cathedral, The Most Rev. Patrick Cooney, Bishop of Gaylord officiating. Concelebrants were Rev. John McCracken and Rev. Bob Nalley. Burial is tentatively scheduled for Saturday, May 11, 2002, at Resurrection Cemetery in Vanderbilt.

Memorial contributions may be made to Catholic Human Services or to the American Cancer Society through the Nelson Funeral Home.
