"Pioneer of Otsego Co. Passes Away"
Wallace Cogswell, 79, dies of Heart Attack at home of Daughter in Milan

Wallace Cogswell, highly respected pioneer of Otsego Co., passed away suddenly of a heart attack at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Mabel Palmer in Milan on Monday morning, October 29, where he had been visiting.

The son of Joseph C. and Mary Wallis Sells Cogswell, he was born in Tuscola Co. July 1, 1866, and lived there until he moved with his family to Otsego Co. in 1882. He was a school teacher in the county schools for a number of years before going into the newspaper business, being owner of the Herald until 1894.

In 1892, in Mt. Morris he was married to Miss Alta Pettit, a teacher in Otsego County schools, and to this union were born nine children, three having preceded him in death.

He purchased the farm 2 miles east of Gaylord when he left the Herald Printing Co. in 1894 and with his family resided there until 1916 when he purchased the property now known as the "20" Lakes Club. Living there until its sale to Dion Geraldine in 1921, he then removed to Arkansas where he remained until 1943. Since that time he and his wife have had their own home in Wayne where he was living at the time of his death.

Mr. Cogswell was a charter member of Fairview Grange and a member of the school board in his district. Although a widely read man, he never took any active part in politics, but old-timers remember him as a staunch Democrat, and though he had a firm conviction in his beliefs, he was known to always support the best man of his choice regardless of party.

Besides his widow, Mrs Alta Pettit Cogswell, he is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Ada Schulter of Oxford, Ohio; Mrs. Anna Hutchinson of Gaylord: and Mrs. Mabel Palmer of Milan; three sons, George and Benjamin of Gaylord and Lloyd of Wayne; 18 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren and a host of relatives and friends.

Funeral services are being held by Rev. L.M. Isaacs this afternoon from Walkers Funeral Home and burial will be at Fairview Cemetery."
