FAIRVIEW
CEMETERY is located at the corner of
North Ohio and Fairview in the city of Gaylord. The
present 30.0 acres was purchased by Livingston Township
from Frank Calkins, and Charles & Nellie Haight in
May of 1897 for the amount of $650. Ownership was
transferred from Livingston Township to the City of
Gaylord by court order on May 26, 1944. Tombstones are dated as early as 1881, even though the property was not purchased until 1897, some of the first lots were sold in 1892 (the earlier gravesites may have been transferred from another cemetery). |
There were 1,885 gravesites in the late 1970's listing done by the Otsego County Historical Society.
In September of 1998 many of the beautiful old trees within the cemetery were destroyed by a violent "down-draft" storm with winds of over 100 mph which moved through the Gaylord area destroying a lot of property in its wake. Fairview Cemetery was directly in its path.
