GOALS

NEMGS serves the genealogical needs of Northeast Michigan.

The aims of the group are:

1. To foster genealogical interest and activities in the area.
2. To encourage and preserve family history.
3. To assist and encourage area libraries to expand and publicize their genealogical holdings.
4. To make available materials of interest and use to genealogists and the general public.

MEETINGS

NEMGS meetings are held on the third Thursday of the month (except in December) at the Besser Museum for Northeast Michigan, 491 Johnson Street, Alpena. Some meetings include speakers, while others have time for sharing and questions on genealogical research. Throughout the year the needs of the experienced genealogist, as well as beginner, are addressed. Place and time of meetings are published in our quarterly newsletter, as well as announcements on radio and in the local newspapers.

COLLECTIONS

NEMGS supports genealogy collections at the Alpena County Public Library, the Besser Museum for Northeast Michigan as well as the Alpena Latter Day Saints Family History Center. At the Alpena library, the society has contributed to the microfilm and genealogical collections. The Besser Museum Library houses our unpublished manuscript collection, the Faces of Northeast Michigan (ancestral photographs), and the Van Nocker Collection and the Milo Burston Collection (Alpena photographers), as well as other materials.
