The museum houses a huge index card catalog sorted alphabetically by
surname. Surname references in the card file may be from newspaper articles,
birth announcements, marriage announcements, obituaries, census references,
books, and cemetery reference information (limited). The museum also has
old plat maps, city directories and phone books. Their local newspaper collection
begins about 1870, and there is a separate list that gives the surnames and
business names for which there may be vintage photographs at the museum.
These card files are not complete to present, but are an ongoing project
well worth looking into if your family was from Manistee county.
Manistee newspaper circulation covers a wide area including
Benzie and Manistee counties.
To see if your family surname is in the card file, call the museum,
but they ask that you please refrain from doing
so during
the months of July - August, and November - December. You must
initiate a request with a phone call - no written requests please!
The museum personnel will give you information about obtaining copies
of material in the collection.
Minimal fees are collected to cover reproduction and mailing
costs.
