Site Name:

Downtown Burdick Mall

Site Location:

Burdick Street between Michigan Avenue and Lovell Street

Date Vanished:

Site Information:

The inspiration for Kalamazoo’s one-time nickname ‘Mall City”, the downtown mall was created by the closing of Burdick Street between Water Street and Lovell in 1959, to create a pleasant shopping atmosphere; it was the first such mall in the United States.  In 1998, car access was restored to help invigorate downtown life.
