Vanished Site Data

Site Name:

Checker Motors Corporation

Site Location:

2016 N. Pitcher Street

Date Vanished:

Plant Closed: 6/30/2009  Demolished: 2011

Site Information:

Kalamazoo built Checkers for 60 years from 1922 to 1982 in the Pitcher plant.  You can still see the occasional Checker Marathon sedan on local streets.  The plant struggled for existence from 1982 to 2009 as the plant operated at partial capacity making Cadillac parts for General Motors. For years abandoned Checker cabs still litter the property.   It closed in the 2009 and the building was razed in 2011.  There was never a better built taxicab.
