'This census was taken by James H. Cook, then living at Black River and the improper spelling of the names indicates unfamiliarity especially with French names. It was also carelessly taken as several well known residents were omitted, among them, John Thorn, William Thorn, George McDougall. The census showed one negro in the county, Henry Saunders of St. Clair township and 180 aliens.'  ~ William Jenks
