I recently received the photo album which belonged
to my Great Grandmother,
Mary A. Jacobs (1810 - 1878). She arrived
in Michigan in 1842 from New
York. She and her husband and children
settled in Thetford Township,
Genessee County, Mich. Her husband was
Orson C. Jacobs. In the photo
album, there are about 100 pictures, mostly
unidentified as this one is
also. It is a small tintype photo of
a distinguished looking black
gentleman. This is the only photo of
a black person in the entire album.
Being that it is tintype photo, it had to
be taken prior to about 1870.
Thetford Township is northeast of Flint about
10 miles. Is there any source
that you know of which would describe the
makeup of the population of
Michigan blacks in the 1870 era? Any
suggestions on how to possibly
identify the individual?
Thanks, Lou Jacobs
