A few headstones from the
Sedgwick Rural Cemetery

Copied by

The Sedgwick Rural Cemetery is located on Route 172, just a little north of Sedgwick Village. It is down a dirt road which is just beside the Old Sedgwick Meeting house, and across the street from the Reverend Daniel Merrill's House, which is now home to the Sedgwick Historical Society.

The cemetery is in a lovely, quiet setting. The ground is covered with field grass, lichen, and wild blueberry plants. A few small wintergreen bushes dot the gentle hillside among the graves.

About 1700 people have been buried in the Rural Cemetery, some of whose names are no longer recorded. The original sexton's list was lost in about 1895, but the Cemetery Association has a list compiled since that date.

For a complete listing of all known burials in Sedgwick, see: A Catalog Listing of Sedgwick, Maine's Resting Places: Cemeteries, Burying Grounds and Family Plots, 1789-1999 Compiled by Barbara M. Grindle. For further information about this book, contact the Sedgwick Cemetery Association, Sedgwick, Maine, 04676.

Below is information from headstones which I copied on three different trips to Sedgwick: 1976, 1998 and 1999. Most of the Hoopers were copied by Joan Milliken Finn. In May 2003, Michelle Marks Enman sent me pictures of the Marks headstones. These are only a few of the many hundreds of people who are buried here, but perhaps your ancestors may be among them.

To locate an individual, use the Edit feature at the top of your computer, then click "Find in page," and type in the name you are looking for. The surnames names are in alphabetical order, but have not been alphabetized within surname. I suggest that you search on surname only, as not all the names are arranged in the order of Given name, Surname.

Some names show active links. Each link will take you to a photograph of the headstone. If you find photographs of headstones for your ancestors, feel free to save them to your own files.
