Bowdoinham Deaths |
Over a period of many, many years, Doris M. Rowland, individually and in the company of others, searched out and recorded tombstone inscriptions, births, marriages, deaths, and burial records to preserve all this rapidly disappearing information for posterity. A vast amount of these records has been freely provided to libraries and historical societies in and around the Sagadahoc area (and probably beyond these boundaries) by her son, Robert L. Rowland. These Bowdoinham death records were primarily taken from tombstones in various area cemeteries by Mrs. Rowland and her husband; however, they were also supplemented by a variety of additional resources, all of which may be viewed in the Abbreviations section of this manuscript. Following is the forward taken from Mrs. Rowland's manuscript in Bowdoinham Deaths:
"FOREWORD
The data herein contained was collected by me over the past two years--cemetery records copied by my husband and myself from the stones. Man and the elements bring about destruction. To preserve the records, for future reference, we present them in this printed form. Many of the cemetery stones are in bad condition and will soon be lost into the ground. Also, many of the plots are impossible to locate without directions. That there are other family burying grounds on the "Home Farm" I feel certain, but were unable to find them. The blank pages in the back, could be used to record them and for the correction of errors.
I wish to thank all those that allowed us to trespass on their property so that these records would be as complete as possible. Without their cooperation this material could not have been compiled.
D.M.R."
Because this manuscript contains approximately 145 pages, I will be uploading them in small batches, as time permits me to do so. To make the large amount of data contained herein easily accessible to our visitors, I have elected to offer an alphabetized link for those who find it tedious to navigate long databases. However, let me make it very clear ... none of the content of Mrs. Rowland's data has been altered in any way for presentation on this website. Any mispelled words, grammar, punctuation, etc., have not been corrected and/or edited in any way; I have only coded it for visual purposes (surnames bolded, etc) on a website. One exception to this statement is the insertion by me of [-----] to indicate no name was provided by Mrs. Rowland. To all the visitors to this database ... ENJOY ... you are the recipients of a very dedicated and wonderful woman.
