The Mellee/Millay Family of Bowdoinham, Maine (from a communique by Neil C. Libby, 3720 Old Middleburg Rd., Jacksonville, Fla. 32210, who cites Rev. C.M. Sinnett's "History of the Millary Family in Maine.")
James Mellee/Melle, listed in 1790 census at Bowdoinham, Sagadahoc Co., was born 25 July 1755, Kilkenny Co., Ireland, and drowned 20 Aug. 1817 in the Cathance River at Bowdoinham. His 17 Dec. 1779 marriage to Abigail, daughter of David and Susan (Flanders) Eastman, is given in Congregational Church records at Harpswell Center. In 1780, he bought a farm at Cathance Landing, now Bowdoinham Village. At the time of the 1790 census James and Abigail had five sons - John, James, Philip, Nathaniel, and Jeremiah; later they had five daughters - Susannah, Catherine, Abigail, Margaret, and Mary - and another son, Kingsbury. All of the children married. Abigail died 21 Jan. 1827 at Bowdoinham, having outlived her husband by nearly 10 years.
Between 1840 and 1850, members of the family met and voted to spell the name "Millay," as the pronunciation of it has always suggested that form. (The 1790 census spells the surname Melee; old records of Harpswell, where James first lived in America, give the spelling as Melle.)
