I am researching ancestory and have two surnames I am
trying to follow up on. As far as the family knows
the avcestors always lived in Cumberland county mostly in
Pownal and Gorham. The Surnames are: Libby
(Lendell) and Woodman (Carrie his wife). He died in
the civil war and is buried in Gorham in a family
plot. His wife died in 1936 at the age of 94 and is
buried next to him. My aunt Esther Macdowell of
Naples Me
has the remaining two family plots for her and her
husband. I have nothing concrete past a marriage
note on their daughter (one of three) Eva Mae Libby who
married George F. Knapton in 1897. Any help you
could give me would be wonderful. I am willing to
pay for research and possible next link ancestory..Would
also be willing to pay for more readable maps than the
internet provided for Cumberland County and
Gorham. Thank you very much for
your time. Sincerely Larry

- In August 1850 by
an Act of the Maine Legislature the Maine Female Seminary
at Gorham, Maine was established. In 1861 the Maine
Female Seminary and Gorham Academy joined to become one.
At that time it became known as Gorham Seminary. Many
scholars were instructed in literature, science, and
religion. In 1878 the state voted to provide for a State
Normal School called Western State Normal School. Later
it was known at Gorham Normal School. In the 1950's it
was named Gorham State Teachers College. Today it is
known as Southern Maine University. If you would like
additional information, please let me know. As a former
graduate of Gorham State Teachers College, I have some
information about it's history. Ruth A Patrick [email protected]

- On 10/21/97 you
asked for information regarding RICHARD T. SYLVESTER who
was born 12/18/1828 and died 10/11/1919 in Westbrook,
Maine. You indicated that he may have been born in
Casco/Raymond. At the time you requested the information,
I didn't think I'd be much help,because the Casco/Raymond
area is not close by and I don't get up that way to do
research. But, when I went through my files the other
day, I realized that I could at least take a look at his
death certificate in Westbrook (my area) to see if there
were any parents listed. This is what I got.
................ 1. Richard's death certificate does not
list any parents' names.
2. His death certificate indicates that he was buried in
Westbrook, at Woodlawn Cemetery. I have put a call into
the cemetery offices to see if they have any information
that will help you, and I'll e-mail you when I get a call
from them. Most everyone around here is really great
about looking things up, but it can take some time.
3. His death certificate also lists his attending
physician as the National Soldier's Home. Now, I'm not
exactly sure what this means, but the National Soldier's
Home, as it was called post-Civil War is now the Veterans
Administration Center in Togus, Maine, a medical facility
for veterans, many of whom live there because of medical
conditions or come and go as their medical needs demand.
So, I called them to ask about any information they may
have for Richard T. Sylvester, since it is apparent that
he either was admitted there at one time or received
treatment there. There is a possibility that his records
would list his mother's and father's names. But, the
request must be made by a family member and can either be
mailed or faxed. Mail to VA-Togus, Release of Information
Office, 1 VA Center, Togus ME 04330-9929 or fax your
request to (207) 621-4896. Be sure your request gives
your name and address, your relationship to Richard T.
Sylvester, and what you are looking for. I would suggest
that you ask for a copy of any of his record, if
possible, and if not, whether there is any listing in any
of his record regarding parents names, specifically, or
other family members.Hopefully, you'll get something that
helps. Please let me know what comes out of this . . . I
wouldn't mind taking a ride up to Casco/Raymond for you
in the spring/summer if you don't get anywhere, but at
this time of the year, with the weather and busier work,
I don't get as far. As an aside, I have a reference to
Richard T. Sylvester as a brick mason in the History of
the Town of Windham, Maine. That's the only mention of
him,but I thought you'd like to know. Some time when I
get a minute, I can checkWindham's records as well, since
I work in Windham anyway. Also, the book mentions that
Company F, 25th Maine Infantry, that Richard enlisted in
on 9/1/1862 was mustered September 29, 1862. Regards,
Julie Pease Galipeau ([email protected])
- From Robert Colby
Feb 9, 1998 Hello,I am researching family history of my g
great grandfather, John H. ROLFE,b. 6 Jul 1813. "His
youth was spent in Maine, his education being received
chiefly at Gorham Seminary. He taught school in
Maine...." From a bio. of John H.ROLFE. He would
have been about 27 years old when the 1840 U.S. Census
for Maine was taken. Could someone please do a lookup for
me in that Census? I am trying to find out where he
lived, in Maine.Any help would be appreciated. Thanking
you in advance, Bob Colby [email protected] ......Tinley Park, IL
Per your request, I
have checked my records for the name ROLFE and only find the
following from "The History of Gorham, Maine" by
McLellan. (Brenda([email protected]) may have more.)
Daniel Rolfe lived on
Queen Street, Gorham, Maine, near the brook, easterly from the
Moses Fogg Farm. His house was on the 30 acre lot #82, which with
lot #84 comprised his farm and homestead. This land he bought
from Gov. Shirley and on 4/16/1760 he sold it to Joseph Libby of
Gorham. He also purchased from Bryant Morton, in 1750, the 100
acre lot #94, which he sold in 1764 to William Wood. Of his
family we can find no record, other than he had a wife ELIZABETH.
Moses Rolfe lived in
Gorham at one time. He married 11/12/1759 to Abigail Jones of
Gorham, Maine. She died 1/24/1763.
The Rolfes now in town
are descended from Capt. Benjamin Rolfe, whose father came over
from France with Lafayette. After the Revolution he settled in
Portland, Maine. Capt. Rolfe was born in Portland on 1/18/1780.
He was a sea captain and made his home in Portland. He owned a
farm in Gorham, Maine, on Horse Meadow Road above Fort Hill where
he was fond of spending some of his time when ashore. He married
Rebecca Williams of Portland, on 6/7/1804, by whom he had 7
children. In 1813 he moved to Gorham, where he lived until 1818
when the family moved back to Portland. Children were: Eliza Ann
born 3/26/1806; Rebecca born 6/26/1807; Joseph born 2/27/1809;
Benjamin born 6/26/1811; Daniel born in Gorham 7/7/1813; William
born in Gorham on 10/26/184; and Dudley born in Gorham 4/24/1816
and died 7/26/1816. Mrs. Rolfe(Rebecca) died 5/26/1816 and Capt.
Rolfe remarried Nancy Bangs, daughter ofThomas Bangs of Gorham,
Maine, on 10/20/1816. By her he had one son, David F.born
7/25/1817. David married Elizabeth Buzzell and second, Kate B.
Eastman.Capt. Rolfe died 8/6/1818 and Nancy (second wife) died
11/6/1824.Again, this is all I have and doesn't appear to be your
direct line. Maybe an uncle????? Do you know whether John H. was
actually born in Gorham, Maine? Julie Pease Galipeau [email protected]
