Note: The Witherspoon family were quite remarkable. John was a nephew of the Rev. John Witherspoon, who was president of Princeton University and a signer of the Declaration of Independence. Son, Unadilla, was a very successful farmer and prominent citizen. McLane’s “Islands of Mid-Coast Maine” covers the history of Butter Island quite well.
