Biographical Note

(From: Peg, [email protected] , Maynard, MA.)

Nelson HALL was the son of Lorenzo HALL and Hannah HOLBROOK, who resided in Rockland, ME. Nelson HALL was born between 1841 and 1843. He lived in St. George in 1880, married to a woman named Rebecca Blake. His occupation was Dept. Coll. Customs.

The fascinating thing about Nelson Hall's civil war service was that he was a member of Berdan's Sharpshooters, an elite company formed by special assignment of President Abraham Lincoln. The requirement for membership was that the sharpshooter had to put 10 consecutive bullets into a ten inch target circle from a distance of 200 yds. Nelson Hall was wounded during the battle of Chancellorville, having his right arm cut off at the shoulder by a shell while storming a rebel battery. He retired on a veteran's pension and died in 1905.

In 1890, the Veteran Schedule Census lists Nelson as living in Tenant's Harbor, Maine. I'm not sure how he came to be interred in Massachusetts. Nelson Hall is buried in the Glenwood Cemetery in Maynard, MA. The headstone inscription reads:

Berdan's US Sharpshooters
March 25, 1843 to March 22, 1905

Rebecca Blake, his wife.
September 28, 1844 to September 22, 1916.
