This town is upon the eastern side of the Kennebec River. It was first called "Baker Town."

There were several families by the name of Baker who settled in this town about the close of the last century.

Asa Fletcher, son of William Fletcher, was among the early inhabitants of the town. Abner Baker and Reuben Baker were among the first settlers.

Agriculture is the leading business of the inhabitants.
