Unassigned Companies

Thirty Companies of Infantry were organized at Augusta, Me., in 1864 and 1865, to serve one, two and three years, for regiments in the field, and were assigned as follows, viz:

The 1st, (Capt. Edward S. Butler,) organized Sept. 16th, 1864, was assigned to the 29th Maine Volunteers as Company A, and mustered out of the U. S. service June 5th, 1865, at Washington, D. C., in accordance with orders from the War Department.

The 2nd, (Capt. Charles T. Hildreth,) organized Sept. 23d, 1864, was assigned to the 16th Maine Volunteers as Company A, and mustered out of the U. S. service with that regiment June 5th, 1865, at Arlington Heights, Va., in accordance with orders from the War Department.

The 3rd, (Capt. Samuel S. Mann,) organized Sept. 20th, 1864, was assigned to the 9th Regiment as Company K, and mustered out of the U. S. service at Raleigh, N. C., July 13th. 1865, in accordance with orders from the War Department.

The 4th, (Capt. Alvan D. Brock,) organized Oct. 4th, 1864, was assigned to the 31st Maine Volunteers as Company L, and mustered out of the U. S. service with that regiment near Alexandria, Va., July 15th, 1865, in accordance with orders from the War Department.

The 5th, (Capt. Addison W. Lewis,) organized Oct. 5th, 1864, was assigned to the 19th Maine Volunteers, and the members thereof transferred to the several companies of that regiment, with which they were mustered out of the U. S. service May 31st, 1865, at Bailey's Cross Roads, Va., in accordance with orders from the War Department.

The 6th, (Capt. J. Sumner Rogers,) organized Oct. 18th, 1864, was assigned to the 31st Maine Volunteers as Company M, and mustered out of the U. S. service with that regiment July 15th, 1865, near Alexandria, Va., in accordance with orders from the War Department.

The 7th, (Capt. Augustine Thompson,) organized Oct. 25th, 1864, was assigned to garrison Fort Popham on the coast of Maine, and mustered out of the U. S. service July 6th, 1865, at Augusta, Me., in accordance with Prov. Special Order No. 140, Head Quarters Department of the East, of June 17th, 1865.

The 8th, (Capt. George S. Scammon,) organized Dec. 17th, 1864, was assigned to the 11th Maine Volunteers, and the members thereof transferred to Companies I and K of that regiment, and mustered out of the U. S. service at the expiration of their term of service.

The 9th, (Capt. Malcolm W. Long,) organized Jan. 21st, 1865, was attached to the Engineer Brigade, Army of the James, and mustered out of the U. S. service Sept. 5th, 1865, at Richmond, Va., in accordance with orders from the War Department.

The 10th, (Capt. Edward M. Robinson,) organized Feb. 8th, 1865, was assigned to the 12th Maine Volunteers as Company E, and mustered out of the U. S. service at Savannah, Ga., Feb. 16th, 1866, by reason of expiration of term of service.

The 11th, (Capt. Edward W. Thompson,) organized March 1st, 1865, was assigned to the 12th Maine Volunteers as Company G, and mustered out of the U. S. service at Savannah, Ga., March 6th, 1866, by reason of expiration of term of service.

The 12th, (Capt. John Montgomery,) organized Feb. 23rd, 1865, was assigned to the 12th Maine Volunteers as Company F, and mustered out of the U. S. service at Savannah, Ga., March 3rd, 1866, by reason of expiration of term of service.

The 13th, (Capt. John O. W. Paine,) organized Feb. 25th, 1865, was assigned to the 14th Regiment as Company E, and mustered out of the U. S. service Aug. 28th, 1865 at Darien, Ga., in accordance with orders from the War Department.

The 14th, (Capt. James N. Fowler,) organized March 4th, 1865, was assigned to the 14th Maine Volunteers as Company F, and mustered out of the U. S. service Aug. 28th, 1865 at Darien, Ga., in accordance with orders from the War Department.

The 15th, (Capt. Henry L. Wood,) organized March 14th, 1865, was assigned to the 12th Maine Volunteers as Company H, and mustered out of the U. S. service at Savannah, Ga., March 16th 1866, by reason of expiration of term of service.

The 16th, (Capt. Horace N. Bolster,) organized March 21st, 1865, was assigned to the 12th Maine Volunteers as Company K, and mustered out of the U. S. service at Savannah, Ga., March 17th, 1866 by reason of expiration of term of service.

The 17th, (Capt. Frederick S. Barnard,) organized March 16th, 1865, was assigned to the 14th Maine Volunteers as Company G, and mustered out of the U. S. service Aug. 28th, 1865 at Darien, Ga., in accordance with orders from the War Department.

The 18th, (Capt. James M. Thompson,) organized March 17th, 1865, was assigned to the 12th Maine Volunteers as Company I, and mustered out of the U. S. service March 17th 1866, at Savannah, Ga., by reason of expiration of term of service.

The 19th, (Capt. Otis Gilmore,) organized March 21st, 1865, was assigned for duty at Augusta, Me., and mustered out of the U. S. service May 23rd, 1865 at Augusta Me., in accordance with orders from the War Department.

The 20th, (Capt. Joseph H. Freemman,) organized March 24th, 1865, was assigned to the 14th Maine Volunteers as Company H, and mustered out of the U. S. service Aug. 28th, 1865 at Darien, Ga., in accordance with orders from the War Department.

The 21st, (Capt. Calvin S. Brown,) organized March 29th, 1865, was assigned to the 1st Battalion Infantry as Company A, and mustered out of the U. S. service April 5th, 1866 at Charleston, S. C., by reason of expiration of term of service.

The 22nd, (Capt. Albert L. Spencer,) organized March 27th, 1865, was assigned to the 14th Maine Volunteers as Company I, and mustered out of the U. S. service Aug. 28th, 1865 at Darien, Ga., in accordance with orders from the War Department.

The 23rd, (Capt. James W. Libby,) organized March 25th, 1865, was assigned to the 14th Maine Volunteers as Company K, and mustered out of the U. S. service Aug. 28th, 1865 at Darien, Ga., in accordance with orders from the War Department.

The 24th, (Capt. Benjamin O. Barrows,) organized March 30th, 1865, was assigned to the 1st Battalion Infantry as Company B, and mustered out of the U. S. service April 5th, 1866 at Charleston, S. C., by reason of expiration of term of service.

The 25th, (Capt. Royal A. Bray,) organized April 1st, 1865, was assigned to the 1st Battalion Infantry as Company C, and mustered out of the U. S. service April 5th, 1866 at Charleston, S. C., by reason of expiration of term of service.

The 26th, (Capt. George L. Fickett,) organized April 5th, 1865, was assigned to the 1st Battalion Infantry as Company D, and mustered out of the U. S. service April 5th, 1866 at Charleston, S. C., by reason of expiration of term of service.

The 27th, (Capt. Samuel C. Wardwell.) The men enlisted for this company were all sworn into the U. S. service by either Provost Marshals or regularly appointed Mustering Officers. They were never mustered into company organization from the fact that recruiting was stopped before the maximum number of men was presented. They were discharged May 13th, 1865, at Augusta, Me., in accordance with special instructions from War Department, dated April 30th, 1865.

The 28th, (Capt. Davcid B. Chesley.) The men enlisted for this company were all sworn into the U. S. service by either Provost Marshals or regularly appointed Mustering Officers. They were never mustered into company organization from the fact that recruiting was stopped before the maximum number of men was presented. They were discharged May 13th, 1865, at Augusta, Me., in accordance with special instructions from War Department, dated April 30th, 1865.

The 29th, (Capt Aaron Ring,) organized April 25th, 1865, remained at Augusta, Me., and was mustered out of the U. S. service at that place May 19th, 1865, in accordance with telegraphic instructions from War Department, dated April 29th, 1865.

The 30th, (Capt Samuel L. Gilman,) organized April 14th, 1865, remained at Augusta, Me., and was mustered out of the U. S. service at that place May 19th, 1865, in accordance with telegraphic instructions from War Department, dated April 29th, 1865.
