2nd Battery Mounted Artillery

Was organized at Augusta, Me., Nov. 30th, 1861, and remained encamped there until March 10th, 1862, when it left for Portland, Me., and was stationed at Fort Preble until April 1st, on which day it left for Washington, and on the 8th of June participated in the action at Cross Keyes, Va., and in the skirmishes at Strasburg, Va., June 1st, at Woodstock, June 2d, Mount Jackson, June 4th, Newmarket, June 5th, Harrisonburg, June 6th, and Port Republic, June 9th.

On the 5th of August, left Waterloo for Culpepper Court House, Va., and on the 8th engaged the enemy 5 miles beyond Culpepper.

On the 9th, it took a prominent part in the battle of Cedar Mountain; it was also engaged in the action at Bull Run on the 30th.

On the 1st of Dec., the Battery was encamped at Brooks’ Station on the line of the Acquia Creek and Fredericksburg Railroad, and participated in the attack upon the enemy at Fredericksburg on the 13th of Dec., being hotly engaged during the whole day.

Late in the afternoon of the 15th, the battery re-crossed the River and took position on the heights, covering the bridge over which Gen. Franklin's troops were crossing. The casualties during the battle were two men killed, 14 wounded; 25 horses killed and six wounded.

On the 19th, the battery went into camp near Fletcher's Chapel, where it remained until May 3rd, 1863, when it was engaged in the battle of Chancellorsville, Va.

It participated in the Pennsylvania campaign, and on the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd of July, took a prominent part in the battle of Gettysburg.

In Dec., most of the man of the Battery having less than one year to serve, re-enlisted for three years, under the orders of the War Department authorizing such re-enlistment, and those having so re-enlisted were granted a furlough of 30 days and came to Maine.

During the months of Feb. and March 1864, and until the 26th of April, the Battery was at Camp Barry, Artillery Camp of Instruction, at Washington, D. C.; it was then assigned to the 9th Army Corps, and proceeded with the Army of the Potomac on the advance towards Richmond.

It was engaged with the enemy about four miles from Spottsylvania Court House on the 10th, 11th, 12th, 14th and 18th of May.

On the 1st and 3d of June, it was again engaged with the enemy about five miles south of the Pamunkey River.

It had a short engagement with the enemy in front of Petersburg on the 26th of July.

On the 27th of Sept., the Battery went into position in the fort on the left of the road leading to Petersburg.

On the 13th of Oct., it occupied the outer defenses of City Point, where it remained until the 3d of May, 1865, when it was ordered to Alexandria, Va.

On the 31st of May, the Battery left Alexandria for Maine, arriving at Augusta June 6th, where, on the 16th, it was mustered out of the U. S. service and the men were paid and finally discharged.
