Town of Greene, Maine
Welcome
In the early settlement the area within this town was a part of Lewiston Plantation, first called Littleborough, after Moses Little of Newbury, Mass., who was a large proprietor, having obtained title to it through the Pejepscot Proprietors. The town was named Greene in honor of Gen. Nathaniel Greene, one of Gen. Washington's best officers in the Revolutionary War, and who became very popular in the North. The large number of Revolutionary soldiers settling here may have had some influence in the matter.¹
Our mission with this site
is to provide genealogical and historic resources and information to fellow genealogists researching family connections and ancestors in Greene Maine; as well as providing an opportunity for all to share information and perhaps connect with a cousin or two.
You will find me often sharing information set forth by my 2nd cousin 3 times removed, Walter Lindley Mower, a local history and genealogical enthusiast, who was intimately familiar with the Town of Greene, his published history of the town serving as the valuable resource in studying Greene and it's early inhabitants.
I will also be posting queries and other requests for information I receive about both the early families of Greene and the town itself.
Current projects
Presently, my interest is in photographing and cataloging all of the grave markers in Greene. I am also working on transcribing the early vital records of Greene.
Additionally I am constructing a database of the families of Greene which will be added to RootsWeb's World Connect database. One stage of this project is to capture the familial information set out in Walter Lindley Mower's History of Greene. I will then be trying to tie and verify the information to the town's records (and early Massachusetts records as well for those early settlers), as well as to the Federal Census records and information contributed by fellow Greene researchers.
How can you help?
Photos: A picture is worth a thousand words. I am looking for for photos of early Greene residents or descendants of the early Greene settlers. I would also be interested in adding some photos of the town - old buildings, etc.
Ancestor Sketches: Share the history of your ancestors with a narrative of their lives and families.
Adopt a Surname: Do you have a connection or special interest in one of the early surnames found in Greene? Volunteer to help me research and try to answer queries received about that particular family. It's a chance to share your knowledge with another and perhaps pick up some new information as well.

I am Dale W. Mower, descendant of Jonathan Mower, an early Greene settler. My line of descent being: Jonathan1, John2, Martin3, George4, Frank Lester5, George Richardson6, Frank Edward7, Dale W. Mower8. My direct line did not stay in Greene for long - Martin left Greene, wandered around and finally settled in Bangor, where the family operated a dairy farm which remained in the family until a decade ago.
