WATERLOO COUNTRY INN GRAVEYARD

Waterloo Country Inn Graveyard, Princess Anne, Maryland

GPS - 38 13' 38" N, 75 45' 04" W

Located on Mt. Vernon Road and situated on Monie Creek, the Waterloo Country Inn was built by Henry Waggaman around 1750 on a tract of land called "Waggaman's Purchase". Later, it was owned by families such as the Teackles, Rigginses, Handys and Wainwrights. In 1864, Somerset County purchased the property for use as an almshouse, and this is how it appears on the 1877 atlas in Hungary Neck District No. 5. The small cemetery out back is maintained nicely by the current owners, Theresa and Erwin Kraemer.

This data was gathered by the CemTrek2001 gang - Shari Handley, Leah Handley, Lindsey VanAssche, Paul Willing, Ralph Willing, Margaret Robinson, Jill Pevear, Tim Alsruhe, Helen and Henry Alsruhe, Donald and Ida Cheek, Linda Fiorini, Ashley McDonnell, L. Paul Morris, Jr., Donna Wendt, Lucinda Williams, and Penny White. We'd like to thank Theresa Kraemer for her hospitality in showing us the cemetery and sharing the history of the property.

John Elliott Waggaman, eldest son of Henry and Mary W. Waggaman, "This stone is erected by his afflicted mother ob:ad Philadelphia Anno dom MDCCLXI" (1761) - stone partially broken.
Note: John Elliott Waggaman is named in his father's will (written 1759) as being under 18.

Broken stone with no name visible - "_nry & Mary Waggaman ob:August anno dom MDCCLX" (1760)
Note: According to Henry Waggaman's will abstract (f. 88-90) as listed in Ruth Dryden's 1750-72 Somerset will book, his daughter Mary Waggaman, who was named (as under 16) in the will written 18 Sep 1759, has died by the time a codicil was written 11 Dec 1760. This is likely to be her tombstone, and would have given her name and "daughter of Henry & Mary Waggaman".
