Frederick County was formed in 1748 from parts of Prince George's County and Baltimore County. It was named in honor of Frederick Calvert, who was the current and last Lord Baltimore and proprieter of Maryland at that time. Montgomery (1776), Washington (1776) and a part of Carroll (1837) counties were formed from Frederick County. Frederick City is the county seat.
