Welcome to the Allegany County's MDGenWeb site.

According to the "MD Manual, 1945-46" Allegany County, MD takes it name from Oolikhann, meaning beautiful stream. The county was formed from Washington County in 1789. Nearly 100 years later, in 1872, Garrett County was carved from the western portion of Allegany County.
