was born in Pennsylvania in 1834, the son of Samuel Glass and Rachel Marshall. With Robert and younger son, James, in tow and before the next son, George, was born in the fall of 1838, Samuel and Rachel came to Hancock County, Illinois, and settled in what would be named Fountain Green Township in 1850.
Robert most likely worked on his father's farm until his marriage to Melinda Dickey, a Pennsylvanian, daughter of Thomas Dickey. Robert and Melinda had five children, Rachel, Mary, Lovina, Linda and Samuel, before Melinda's untimely death in 1864. Lovina and Linda died young. Follow the link to Melinda for more detail on this first family. With three little ones under the age of 8, Robert moved in with his parents. Or perhaps just the children were living with their grandparents, because Robert was counted twice in 1870: in his parents' home in Fountain Green Township and also by himself in Carthage Township. On January 18, 1872, Robert married Marian I. Barrett, daughter of Frederick and Harriet Barrett. Marian, nearly 20 years younger than Robert, was born in Vermont in 1852. Robert and Marian began their married life in Fountain Green Township, later moving to Pilot Grove Township. Together they had seven children.
Robert died in 1907 and was buried at Webster Cemetery. Marion survived him by almost 40 years. In 1909 or '10 she married William M. Spangler, born about 1850 in Illinois, the son of Philip and Mary Spangler. William was a widower with grown children; his first wife was Laura G. Randall. He died March 3, 1927, in Pilot Grove Township, Hancock County. Mrs. Miriam Glass Spangler, 93, passed away at her home at 12:30 o'clock, Thursday, January 10, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Lena Troute of Burnside. Miriam Barrett was united in marriage to Robert M. Glass January 18, 1872 in Carthage. To this union was born seven children, Mrs. Lena Troute of Burnside, Thomas Glass of Hanford, Calif., Mrs. Flossie Matthews of Murtaugh, Idaho, and Mrs. Iona Cummings of Galesburg. Three sons, Walter, John and Olen, and her husband preceded her in death. She also leaves to mourn her passing an aged sister, Ida B. Sargent of Los Angeles, Calif. She was later married to William Spangler also deceased. Mrs. Spangler was a member of the Burnside Christian church for 51 years, where she attended regularly as long as her health permitted. Through the last years of her life she was cared for by her daughter, Mrs. Lena Troute, assisted by Iona Cummings during the last illness. The funeral was conducted in the Christian church at 1 o'clock Saturday afternoon by Rev. Nichols. Songs were sung by Mrs. Avis Todd and Mrs. Ed Underwood with Mrs. Kieopfer at the piano. Pallbearers were Arthur Salisbury, Merlin Furrow, Fred Barnes, Lloyd Woodside, Ray Hull and Farlin Duffy. Burial was in Webster cemetery.
