WILLIAM FISCUS
1813-1906
& JANE McDANIELS
1812-1884

Author - Marcia Farina

An outline map of Ohio counties, illustrating the location of Brown County. In 1840 William Fiscus was listed as the head of a household in Pike Township, Brown County, Ohio.  Also counted were his wife, presumably, and five children under the age of 10.  His occupation was shown as manufacture or trade.  Listed on the same census page were George, Abraham, John and Hiram Fiscus.

In 1850 William and Jane Fiscus were residents of Pike Township; at this time there were but three children living at home.  William had no occupation and school attendance was not reported for the children.

By 1860 the family had emigrated to Fountain Green Township, Hancock County, Illinois, where William took up farming.  William and Jane would remain there for the rest of their lives.

He was born May 12, 1813, in Ohio.  Jane's birthplace is unclear: she was born February 12, 1812, in Pennsylvania or Ohio or Virginia.  In Federal Census records from 1850 through 1880, Pennsylvania was listed twice, Ohio and Virginia once each.  In the 1870 census Jane was listed as Mary, so we could guess her full name was Mary Jane but she preferred Jane.  When Jane's son, Hamer, died in 1914, Jane's grandson reported on Hamer's death certificate that Jane's maiden name was McDaniels; both her given name and birthplace were shown as unknown.

Jane died November 19, 1884.  William survived her by more than 20 years, dying on January 14, 1906.  They are both buried at McConnell Geddes Cemetery in Fountain Green Township.

Beyond the 1840 census, we can document three of William and Jane's children:

i. Mary Fiscus, born October 25, 1834, in Ohio.  She died April 6, 1922, in LaHarpe, Hancock County, burial at LaHarpe Township Cemetery.

ii. Thomas L Hamer Fiscus, born September 5, 1836, in Brown County, Ohio.  He died March 21, 1914, at Boonville, Cooper County, Missouri, burial at Boonville.  The cause of death was listed as bronchial pneumonia.

iii. Nicholas Chambers Fiscus, born about 1838 in Ohio.  He died in January of 1879, burial location undetermined.
