Job Clements

Job Clements (1615-1682)

Job Clements was the eldest son of Robert and Lydia (--) Clements. He was born in England about 1615. He initially came to America in 1639 and settled at Ipswich, MA, and from there moved to Pentucket (Haverhill) in 1640, where he was one of twelve original settlers. He built the first house in town. He returned to England and apparently encouraged his family to return with him in 1642.

Job was a tanner and on 27 Feb 1644, the town voted to give him land for his business. He like his father was active in town affairs. He was appointed constable in 1647.

On 25 Dec 1645, Job married Margaret Dummer, daughter of Thomas Dummer. This was the first marriage performed in Haverhill. Three children were born to this union—John, Job and Mary. In 1652 he and his family moved to Dover, NH. After his wife’s death, he married Lydia Gouf and after her death, he married Mrs. Joanna Leighton on 16 July 1673.

Job died at the age of sixty-seven in Dover, NH.
