In the year 1853, Georg and Katrina Schnopp, and their three sons, Karl, Martin, and Conrad, and three daughters, Elizabeth, Katrina, and Cresentia came from Messkirch, Germany to America.  When they left Germany, Karl and Martin had been in the Army, Karl in the Infantry and Martin in the Cavalry.  Conrad (16) was studying to be a priest and had completed one year in college.

Katrina, the wife and mother died shortly after they arrived in America.

When they arrived in New York, and not having a definite destination they were obliged to stay there for some time.  During their stay there they were robbed of their entire fortune, $3500 which they had hidden in the bottom of a trunk.

A lumber company in Vermont wanted men and sent agents to New York to engage workers.  The Schnopp man agreed to work for them so the entire family went to Vermont, where Georg and his three sons were employed in the lumber camp for some time.

Margaret Schretzman came to America from Gerichtstetten, Germany with her father Jacob Schretzman in 1851, when Margaret was nine years old.  They lived in Stephentown, NY and there she and Conrad Schnopp were married.  They lived in Readsboro, VT, for a time, and there their son, Frank was born; later they moved to New Lebanon, NY where Caroline was born.  Conrad worked for the Tilden Company in their herb garden for two years, then they moved to Peru, MA where Conrad and Martin bought land on Mount Pleasant, and built their homes; there Conrads son William Putnam and three daughters, Emma, Clara, and Mary were born.  William died when he was two years old, and Clara was 4.5 years old when she died.

Conrad and family moved from Peru to the Henry Smith place in Hinsdale.  Margaret and Etta were born there; Margaret died when she was six months old.

Conrad wanted a larger house and more land so bought the Erastus Pierce farm, near Ashmere Reservoir, in Hinsdale.  There Margaret, Catherine, George, Clara, Isabel and Alice were born.

Grandfather Georg Schnopp died there in 1889, aged 92 years.

Grandfather Jacob Schretzmann died in 1876, aged 82 years.

Conrad Schnopp died in 1918, aged 81 years
