Llangattock Lingoed Genealogy: Courtr Records

Civil and Criminal Court Records

Court of Star Chamber
This Court operated between 1485 and 1642. Many cases, ostensibly dealing with charges of assault etc., were actually concerned with property rights.

Monmouthshire Quarter Sessions and Gaol Deliveries
The records for 1576-77 are the only ones to have survived. The Llangattock Lingoed entries provide an interesting snapshot of some legal wrangles.

Oxford Assizes
At present only a couple of illustrative examples have been located.
Consistory Court of Llandaff
Defamation cases were brought before the Consistory Courts of the four Welsh dioceses. The records of these ecclesiastical courts do not survive in quantity until the Eighteenth Century. The complainant's case was set out in a 'libel', which recorded: the names of the parties in dispute, the residence and style or occupation of the defendant and plaintiff, the date and place of the offence, and the exact wording of the slander or defamation.
