An idea of the change in population in the eighteenth century can be gained by looking at the numbers of births marriages and deaths in the parish registers. They should be treated with caution, because the registers include some not resident in the parish. Still, the general picture is of steady, but slow growth through the eighteenth century and then an increase in the early nineteenth, reflected in the census figures.

1939 Register

This Register was compiled at the outbreak of the Second World War, as a basis for issuing identity and ration cards. It was also used when the NHS was set up in 1948 and for some years after that. It lists occupants of households on the night of 29 September 1939, giving their full name; date of birth; whether male (M) or female (F); whether married (M), single (S), widowed (W) or divorced (D); and occupation. Women who married during the currency of the Register have their married names written in. For privacy reasons the published version blanks out the entries for anyone born less than 100 years ago, unless they are known to have died.
