SAMARASINGHE - Family #3142

සමරසිංහ

Meaning : Lion of the fight/war http://www.karava.org/family_names

[This family line were keepers of the Buddhist temples in the Kandyan Kingdom. (The name probably has other honorifics, vasagama etc.). [Is the title Basnayake Nilame?]  Ancestors of this branch of the family went to Portuguese for education (and for other reasons?). They became Christian. In the 1800’s fought against British, and as a result lost much land.  Became notaries etc. Family built a Christian (catholic?) church.  Mid to late 1800’s spelling was Samarasinha. More information is on Genebase.com]. This family hails from Walawwe families.  Research is under way to find exact details and previous ancestors. Genetic genealogy (Genebase.com DNA testing) is being utilized as well to find answers. A distinguishing genetic trait of some members of this Samarasinghe line is above average iq.  Haplogroup R1a  [If anyone has information pertaining to this family line, please contact sgenweb@gmail.com. ]

‘An Historical Relation of Ceylon’ by Robert Knox gives an accurate portrait of the kandyan kingdom in the 1600’s……..and explains special privileges the temple systems were given by the Kings.

Makawitage/Makewitage [ and/or Madabawita??]

Kegalle is/was in the Sabaragamuwa Province. Was Kegalle considered part of the Southern Province in the 1800’s? or was it part of Northern Province?  In the 1800’s a boundary change happened to some Korales. Need to study this.

Kegalle is/was in the Sabaragamuwa Province. Was Kegalle considered part of the Southern Province in the 1800’s? or was it part of Northern Province?  In the 1800’s a boundary change happened to some Korales. Need to study this.
