About this project

   Welcome to Lithuanian genealogy project!

This site is totally free for anyone who is interested in doing their own family research: beginners as well as advanced, for those who are interested in helping to achieve it, and anyone who just likes something about Lithuania and its history...

After trying to do my own Lithuanian family tree I tried to find some useful information on the World Wide Web ( the Internet sites ) and had to finally admit that there was practically no information that was helpful to me. I hit a wall . To make matters worse , since I don’t live in Lithuania, the only  option available to me to was to request a genealogical family tree from the National Archives located in Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania. I also found out that there are so many requests that the waiting “line” for this kind of research is about 3 years! Plus, depending on the amount of information and family branches, the cost for all of it could add up to a large amount of money. So I am hoping that the information posted on this site would help at least a little bit especially to those who don’t know exact dates or places of their ancestors’ vital statistics.

On this site you will find the cemetery lists and records (e.g. tombstone transcriptions) and a list of churches and some info about them. These items will be posted in each of the municipalities and regions, grouped by counties.  Also on this site you’ll see the helpful links to other Lithuanian-genealogy related sites (like where to write for documents), help for beginners of family tree research, and, of course, a helpful page for the volunteers without whom this site would not grow. These people are verrrrrry much  requested even if each person could spend only half and hour in helping to collect much needed information, in time it would add up a lot.

Suggestion-if you don’t know in which region or municipality is your town, try to look on the website <www.maps.lt>, type in the name of that town or just a part of it and it will show you all the possilbe choices.

I think that it is time for Lithuanian genealogy to start planting its seeds and find out where everyone came from.

All Lithuanians and their descendants, let us unite for this wonderful project!!!
