Descendants of JOHN TRACY and of Maryland and Mason Co., Kenturcky

Research on this group of Tracy's began with information on Bazil Tracy who lived in Wayne Township, Montgomery Co., IND. There is an informative biography of Bazil published in the 1881 History of Montgomery Co, Indiana, by H. W. Beckwith. In this write-up Bazil identifies his date and place of birth and names his parents John and Nancy Tracy. In the 1880 US Census he states the birthplace of his parents as Maryland. Using this data, with other census data, cemetery records of Montgomery Co., IND and marriages from Mason County KY, it is possible to develop a fair approximation of this Tracy family. There seem to be a strong relation between the Tracy and Grenard family. Bazil Tracy's buisness partner is several ventures was Jesse Grenard. Bazil's sister, Dezire/Desire was married to John Grenard and it appears that Grenard family settled with the Tracy family from Mason Co., KY to Montgomery Co., IND. It would seem from the 1810 census that the progenitor of that line was a William Grenard possibly born in England and his wife born in Maryland. These families shared some common children naming paterns with both John and Nancy Tracy and William Grenard naming sons Jesse and Vezy. Vezy is an unusal name comming from the Veasy family in Maryland. Further data on this family was provided by Bob Reynolds and Walt Tracey which names John's wife Nancy as the daughter of Veasy Price.

John Tracy apparently moved to Mason County KY in the 1790s, as he was there by 1800. This was not the only group of Marylanders who went to Mason County KY at that time. Another family of interest to this researcher is John Peddicord and Rebecca Boring who were married at 27 Aug 1771 St John's Parish in Baltimore Co., MD and moved to Mason Co., KY ca. 1793. Although we do not know John Tracey's parnets, his wife Nancy's parents, Vessey Price and Linn or Sim.? (some seem to think it may be Ann) Barton were married in eastern Baltimore Co., (recorded in the St Johns and St George's parish records) on 17 Oct 1769. Vesey Price purchased from the estate of John Barton in 1784 the tract "Barton's Lot" in Harford County MD, on which he was a tenent. Land records still need to be checked, but Vessey Price does not appear in the 1790 census of Maryland.

Based on the 1810 census records, it appears that John Tracy was born between 1765 and 1784 (age 26 to 45). Nancy Ann's birth date is reported as 27 May 1776. Since we can place Veazey Price in Harford Co., MD, it would seem that John Tracy was from the eastern part of Baltimore County or Harford County. The Tracey family that lived in this area was the line of Benjamin Tracey. So I feel it is possible that John Tracy may have been a son of Benjamin Tracey b. 1733. Other possible sons of Benjamin (based on the 1783 tax list of Back River Upper Hundred/Middle River Upper Hundred are Benjamin Jr., Nicholas, Bazil, and Edward.
