CHARLES TRACEY
of Calvert and Prince Georges counties (died ca. spring of 1698)

Teague Tracey may have been a relative of Charles Tracey, all we know is that they resided in the same community, Mount Calvert Manor, in what was originally Calvert county and became Prince Georges county in 1696. Most of the early Calvert county records (except those held at the state level) no longer exist due to a series of fires at the county court house. No doubt Teague and Charles knew each other, but what, if any relationship existed between them will be a matter of conjecture.

The fist mention of Charles Tracey appears in the following petition from residents of Calvert Co. (From the Maryland Archives Vol 8, page 145.)

To the King and Queen's most Excellent Majty's
The Humble Recognition and Address of Calvert County in the Province of Maryland. Since heaven hath been pleased to bless your Sacred Majesties with the Imperiall Crowne of your Realmes and Dominions of which wee have received the blessed news to our comfort and rejoicing) we owne it our duty to Almighty God (by whom Kings reign) to acknowledge His gracious protection, and preservation of your Royal Persons, through many dangers and difficultyes to make you the Redeemers of his people, and the Defenders of their Religion. As we have to the utmost of our power owned and asserted the same against the great Oppositions we have met with here, so we will with our lives and fortunes still demonstrate our duty herein as becomes the Allegiance and Fidelity of true and P. R. O. loyal1 Subjects. Fully resolved never to be withdrawne from Colonial Papers your Majesties Service, by any artifice or attempts whatsoever of your Majestys Enemies. Wee will chearfully submitt to your Majesties pleasure (which we doe with all humility and desire expect) in an answer to our petitions made by our Representatives in a late Convention of the whole Province that you would be pleased to order such a Settlement amongst us by a Protestant Governmt whereby our Religion and Properties may be secured Then we shall be able publickly (which without such an Establishment, wee must in some measure continue deprived of) to prayse and magnifie in the great congregation, that God that hath blest us with your Majesties Protection, wee can only in the mean time, every one in particular, adore the Divine goodness for the great deliverance by your sacred per sons to all your Protestant Subjects and humbly pray continuance of the same to yourselves and Royall Progenie, that there never be wanting of your Illustrious Race one to succeed in your Royall vertues and dignity when yourselves shall be Translated into an Immortal Inheritance of a never fadeing Crown of Glory.

Charles Tracey first appears in Prince Georges county records as a witness to deed of 4 July 1696 from Mary Yates of Anne Arundel co., Widow to Charles Williams of Prince Georges co. planter for 200 A called Huckleberry. (apparently, the first deed recorded in Prince Geroges Co).

Charles Treacy, Innholder of Prince Georges county, was the grantee of a a 99 year lease, dtd 10 Sept 1697 from Richard Groome of Prince Georges Co.planter for A 100 acre part of Mt Calvert Manor in Prince Georges Co at the mouth of Pig Pen Poynt Creek, lately in the tenure of said Groome. The consideration for the lease was 6000 pounds tobacco and yearly rent of one ear of indian corn to be paid 25th December each year. The deed was witnessed by Josias Towgood and Thomas Hawkins. The deed was ackn'd by Richard Groome & wife 1697, and Recorded 1 Nov 1700, in Vol A p.225 of the Prince Goerges county land records (apparently recorded by Charles' estate Administrator, David Small)

David Small, merchant, administrator of Charles Treacy, late of PG Co.,innholder at the time of his decease) granted to Joshua Cecell of Prince Georges County a 95 year lease, dtd 5 April 1700 for a 100 Acre part of Mount Calvert Mannor at the mouth of Pig Poynt Creek, which tract had been leased by said Treacy from Richard Groome of PG Co. planter, by deed dated 10 Sept 1697. The consideration for this deed was 20 pounds sterling and yearly rent of one ear of indian corn December 25th. The deed was signed by David Small and witnessed by Thomas Crabb and Jo'n Bird. This deed was recorded in the land records of Prince Georges county on 1 Oct 1700 in Vol A. p. 228.

Another deed from Charles Tracey's administrator, David Small, sheds more light on Charles Tracey's status. This deed dated 14 July 1700 was a 94 Year lease from David Small of Prince Georges Co. merchant, Administrator of Charles Treacy, late of Charlestown, innholder, deceased. To: Capt. Thomas Emms of London England, mariner. This deed was a lease for a tract of 2 acres and 72 perches taken from Mount Calvert Mannor on the west side of the Patuxent River in the freshes near the dividing of the river. Said Mount Calvert Mannor was granted to Phillip Calvert 17 February 1658, and from Calvert the land passed to William Groome and Mary his wife (see deed Small to Emms 14 July 1700), who conveyed said 2 acres and 72 perches to Charles Tracey by 99 Year lease dated 28 Sept 1695. Charles Tracey died leaving neither wife nor issue and the property passed to David Small, his greatest creditor.

The consideration for this deed was 50 pounds sterling and yearly rental of one grain of wheat paid December 25th. This deed was witnessed by John Batie, and Edw'd Battson. It was ackn'd by David Small on 17 July 1700 and recorded: 19 February 1700 [1701 by today's calendar] in Vol A., p. 329 of the land records of Prince Georges county.

Charles Treacy is also mention in 2 other deeds that list William Groome as the grantor and as an owner of adjoining tract to the subject land. The first of these deeds is a 99 Year lease dated 9 Oct 1698 from William Groome of Charlestown, PG Co. innholder, eldest son of William Groome deceased, late of Calvert Co.,gent and Mary his wife to Thomas Emms of the City of London, mariner and David Small,of PG Co. merchant. The propert of this first deed is described as 250 acres, part of tract called "Mount Calvert" on the west side of Patuxent River bounding on Calverts Branch and land of Mr. Bradley, Richard Groome, Charles Treacy and on the main town road......Excluded from the present transaction were those lots already taken up and built upon according to the intent of an act of the Provincial Assembly constituting a part of the said manor into a town {CharlesTown} and also a one acre lot leased by the said William and Mary Groome to Josias Towgood for 99 years. The consideration for this transaction was 50 pounds sterling and annual rent of one cock each December 25th. This deed was recorded in the land records of Prince Georges county 4 Nov 1698 in Vol. A, p. 137.

The second deed was another lease for 99 years, dated 24 July 1697 from William Groome of Charlestown, Prince Georges Co., innholder, and Mary his wife, eldest son of William Groome, late of Calvert Co. gent. Deceased t o: Thomas Emms of the City of London, mariner, and David Small of PG Co., merchant. This deed was for 163 acre portion of the tract call Mount Calvert on Calverts Branch on the west side Patuxent River in the freshes near the dividing of the river; bounding the land of John Davis, Christopher Beanes, and Charles Tracys, and on the road that goes to the ferry.......

Another document found in the land records of Prince Georges county is an An indenture of 14 May 1719 from Joshua Cecell, Gentleman of Prince Georges county to Robert Bradley. According to this indenture, Richard Groome of Prince George county by deed dated 10 Sept 1697 named Charles Tracey as his executor. His will assigned for 99 years all that part of Mount Calvert Manor bounded by Pig Penn Points laid out 100 acres to David Small. David Small sold to Joshua Cecell for 20 pounds. There is no record of a will for Richard Groome in the Maryland Calendar of Wills, so while it appears there was a will, it is no long existent.

Charles Tracey is mentioned as in the list of debtors or as a payee in various administrative accounts files with the Perogative Court between 1695 and 1709. The administration of the estate of Mr. Richard Charlett of Prince Georges Co filed Jun 28, 1698 lists payments to Charles Tracy. The inventory of this estate dated 31 July 1696 and filed 27 Oct 1696 in Calvert Co lists Charles Tracey in the list of debts. Charles is in the list of debts of the estate of John Rennald dated March 29, 1697. The list of debts in the inventory of the estate of John Cracraaft of Prince Georges Co dated 10 March 1697 lists Charles Tracey and Samuell Groome. Charles Tracy is in the list of debts of the estate of Thomas Barker, mariner of St Mary's Co dated 25 April 1698. In the Inventory of Henry Truman 23 Jan 1695, among list of debts is Charles Tracy.

Curiously, in the administrative account of the estate of a Henry Truman of Calvert Co dated 17 Jan 1709 under the list of debts is Charles Tracy per _______Wadsworth.

The only reference to any connection between Charles and Teague Tracey found those far is a suit filed by the administrators of Charles Tracey's estate against Teague Tracey concerning some kegs of cider.
