Descendants of Morris Petticord of Baltimore County

The parents of Morris Petticord might be a Dorsey Peticoat and his wife who are found in the 1790 census of Baltimore County, MD enumerated near John Bond, the apparent grandfather of Ketura Bond, wife of Morris Petticord. In the 1810 census of Baltimore County, Morris is found listed next to a Nathan Gorsuch who in 1798 was resident on Bond's Industry, the estate of John Bond who named a granddaughter Ketura Bond in his will. Comparing the names around Dorsey Peticoat in the 1790 census with those around Morris in the 1810 census of Baltimore County. (Unfortunately there is no 1800 census for Baltimore County). Through the 19th century, members of Morris' family are found either in the City of Baltimore or in the area of Cockeysville and Shawan in Baltimore County and are living with or near members of the Bond family.

Information confirming the issue of Morris and Keturah were recently provided by Ms. Janet (Buchen) Sangren, a descendant of Laura Petticord (a granddaughter of Morris and Keturah) and George W. Buchen. Laura dictated some notes on the family history prior to her death in 1924. Perhaps one of the most unique twists in this family history is that Rachel (Rahel) Smith (or Scmidt) who was the mother of George Buchen (and wife of John Buchen) is said to have first been married to a brother of Laura's father, Charles C. Petticord. (e.g. Laura's mother-in-law was also her aunt.) However, it is uncertain from the information which brother of Charles Rachel was married to. However it was stated that the brother and Rachel had a daughter named Louise Martin Petticord. It appears from the records that this daughter was Louisa C. Petticord b. ca 1828 who married on 2 Dec 1873 in Baltimore to Lewis Martin. Lousia C. Petticord age 22 is listed in the 1850 census of Baltimore in the household of her uncle John Petticord (who we refer to as John the hatter) and his wife Catharine Wilson. In 1880 Lewis Martin and Louisa are living in Abingdon, Harford Co., MD. Hopefully there may be a death certificate for Louisa that may shed light on her father.

In the 1810 census of Baltimore County, Morris Petticoat (or Petticort) is listed with 3 males under age 10, 1 male age over 45, 1 female under 10, one female 26-45.. on this page also is Norman Gorsuch, Yorh Peatils, Henry Leaf, and Thomas Gent. Based on the names this appears to be the Back River Upper Hundred and in the vicinity of Bond's Industry. In 1789 Norman Gorsuch was resident on the tract Bond's Industry owned by John Bond.
In the 1820 Census of Baltimore County, Morris Petticord is listed with 2 males under age 10, 2 males aged 10 to 16, 1 male aged 16 to 26, 1 male aged 26 to 45, 1 male over 45, 1 female age 10 to 16, 1 female over 45.
In the 1830 census of Maryland, Morris Petticord is in the 7th district of Baltimore County with 1 male age 15 to 20, 1 male age 60 to 70, one female age 15-20, and one female age 50 to 60.
